iPad 2 Vent - AT&T vs Verizon

ARGH! DH has been drooling over the iPad 2 since Apple announced it. He has been counting the days until the release date and researching to see exactly which one he wanted.

He headed to Best Buy today after work and didn't get there in time to get a ticket to purchase one. He called the local Walmarts and the 1 Target and found that Target had only 1 left and it was the 32gig 3G Wi-Fi VERIZON version he wanted. The lady on the phone assured him that it was definitely the VERIZON version and not the AT&T. We rushed to Target and he bought it. Got home and took the outer plastic wrap off only to then notice that the small print said GSM-EDGE which he thought was AT&T.

Yep - sure enough it was AT&T and NOT the VERIZON version but because he took the plastic wrap off of the box, Target will not take it back less than an hour later without a 15% restocking fee ($109!!!).

So just a word to the wise - make sure you are purchasing the correct version before you leave the store! There is nothing on the package anywhere that says AT&T or Verizon - just the codes for the network it runs on.

This was an expensive lesson learned.

Uh, I would be calling the store manager to let them know that you were told it was something it was not. And if you don't get what you want from them, go higher until you do.

Yep, I would be furious. That much money and not what you were told? No ma'am.

Besides, AT&T is the Devil.

that is why I only buy from Apple, you could have pre ordered one. or, I use AT&T, it is either Apple or AT&T ..I never go elsewhere for Apple products.
did you get black or white? lol I would buy it from ya! If you cannot work it out at the store, then I would sell it on either ebay or CL for a few dollars less, you will get it.

I saw an Ebay sale on an iPad version one that was completed several days after the iPad 2 announcement. The people paid about $100 MORE for the iPad one than it sold for on the Apple site before the announcement of the iPad 2.
Since Apple announced a $100 discount on the price of the iPad version 1, that person ended up paying almost $200 more (plus shipping and handling)!!

OP here. We listed it on CL last night for just the price we paid with no bites but we are in the middle of nowhere. We are going to head back to Target this morning and speak to a manager and see if they will return it without the restocking fee.

I am very hesitant to list it on ebay for fear of dealing with Paypal and a chargeback. We recently had something expensive charged back from an ebay sale (and are now out $150 and the item) and I don't want to go through that again.

There is also a huge city about 100 miles away so I may list it on that CL and just meet halfway for cash if Target won't take it back.

I'm just annoyed at Target for telling us it was the version that it wasn't and at Apple for not having these clearly marked on the package so that you can tell what kind it is before you open it.

He got the white one. He was so anxious to get it that he didn't want to wait to order it from Apple. AT&T's coverage around here is horrid - we have our iPhones through them and will switch back to Verizon as soon as our contract is up!

Crap. $109.00 thats just crap.

We bought our 32 wifi Ipad last year at Apple when they first came out … it was like the blind leading the blind with B&I … we had no clue what we were doing or asking … did not even know about Verizon vs At&t …

Good news! The manager at Target took it back and gave DH a full refund.

Because it was open they have to send it back to Apple who will probably sell it as a refurb even though it was never out of the box.

Now DH is on the hunt for the Verizon version!
