Inventory question

So we have a booking over xmas that we booked a few weeks ago as an IGT rate. We have never cruised before. I think I booked a DCL cruise once and cancelled pretty quickly as the cost seemed so high. Anyway, the pice and timing worked out for this one. All that said, I have never really paid attention to how DCL does cabin inventory/pricing. As we are IGT, I am frequently looking to see what cabins are available still to play the "where might we be" game (if it even works that way!).

I have been keeping a little note of cabin inventory every few days over the past few weeks because clearly I have too much time on my hands:

Inside: 37, 13, 0, 0, 22, unavailable
Inside deluxe: 17, 5, 12, 2, 2, unavailable
Oceanview: 42, 25, 27, 6, 21, 26, 19, 24 on Friday, and today: unavailable
Deluxe verandah: 45, 30, 18, 21, 18, 26, 37, 36, 36
Family Verandah: 18, 17, 11, 19, 17, 17, 17, 17, 16

I was surprised the inside cabins had crazy variability and then suddenly became unavailable, so even though I know I am in an inside cabin, I decided to keep writing down the number of cabins left in other categories. Why is there such wild fluctuations in the number of cabins - especially so close to the cruise date? I assume you have to pay in full like we did?

This is just a theory of mine. Sometimes you won't even get assigned a room until you check in at the port (rare but can happen). I think this can happen when other people upgrade at the port as well. For example someone in a 10A inside room upgrades to a 9D now that 10A room is vacant so an 11A can now upgrade as well if they would like thus emptying that room as well. I know they have a method of some sorts I just haven't cracked the code yet. Hope this helps.

Up until the PIF date we are allowed to change rooms so a room that was booked may suddenly become available or if someone cancels. Thank you! I was wondering if they blocked out the inside rooms in the hopes people would book ocean view, then block out the ocean view in hopes of verandah sales? I would have thought they would try and fill the cheaper rooms, as the verandah rooms over xmas are $$$, but I am sure the have their reasons! Interesting on the upgrade at port. I hadn't considered that - perhaps we will be able to upgrade for a decent price as well :-)

It is possible they pulled rooms or blocks of rooms while working on GTY assignments. Also, each time someone "peeks" at booking and a specific room, that room is temporarily blocked. Plus if they have sold enough *GT bookings, those categories may in fact be sold out.

Enjoy your cruise!

Rumor has it that they don't show all available rooms anyway. They show a sampling of rooms in that category.

Oh that makes sense - especially as there are now 22 cabins available in Oceanview that was unavailable yesterday! Thank you, I am sure we will have a blast!
