Interval International Trade - Likelihood of getting into Marriott in Hawaii?

Has anyone had any luck trading for a Marriott in Hawaii through Interval International? We got some unexpected extra points when we purchased our DVC resale last year that were just about to expire so we put them into Interval and started a search request for a trip in 2026.

I'm just wondering if anyone has been able to get into a Marriott on one of the Hawaiian Islands or if I need to lower my expectations and search for some other resorts too? Any tips and/or does anyone know what times of year there might be more availability? Also, how close to time of travel should I give up hope if I haven't gotten a match? Thanks!

I know that Marriott owners have priority over owners of other systems, including DVC, when exchanging into Marriott resorts, but I don’t know how “valuable“ DVC is when trading into Marriott.

TUG (for an annual membership fee) shows what possible trades are seen by members and what has been seen in the past.

Marriott owners will take most of the high demand weeks. Traveling when the kids are in school improves your chances. If you have school age children, trading probably won't work.

I haven't traded DVC but I used an unbranded 1BR to trade for a 1BR at Marriott Kauai Beach Club in May 2019. That resort is a hotel conversion so it's not the most popular with purists but it has a great location.

Marriott owners have preference in trading back into other Marriott resorts, so as a non-Marriott owner you're at a disadvantage. However, not all Marriott Hawaiian resorts are created equal.

For example, Kauai Beach Club (that @chalee94 mentioned) is a pretty easy trade for studios or 1BRs. It's a hotel conversion, and it shows, but still quite nice. We had a summer 1BR oceanfront there a few years back using an unbranded trader. We were literally steps from lounge chairs just above the beach, in the shade. It's not a "true" 1BR in that the kitchen is more studio-like, and there is no washer/dryer. But, there was a living room and a bedroom, plus two full baths.

On the other hand, you can pretty much rule out Waikoloa on the Big Island---that resort is rarely if ever deposited to Interval. Ko 'Olina (next to Aulani) is sort of in the middle. Getting a larger unit will be tricky, especially when kids are out of school. But not impossible.

Definitely join TUG as a Member. You will learn a TON from the Exchanging and Sightings boards.

Did you put in a request via II? Like waitlist with DVC, sometimes you can see inventory before a waitlist is fulfilled, but it at least keeps you in the queue.

Maui is probably the hardest to get into - the converted hotel rooms have better odds than the timeshare oriented towers with Marriott and Starwood was hard to get into even before it joined Marriott. Kauri now has several resorts which makes that easier (and that island has less tourist in general). Although Oahu has just one MVC timeshare, Ko 'olina is large.

The more flexibility the better.

As mentioned by others, Marriott owners get priority with Marriott to Marriott exchanges so you are at a certain disadvantage. If you have the flexibility to travel off season , you may have a better chance to match your search. And be flexible on the island too - Most want to go to Maui but Kauai also has some great Marriott resorts (Marriott Waiohai in Poipu is our favorite, and the Westin Princeville is also very nice, but not on a beach). With II it's a numbers game, so the more flexible you are, the better.

As a backup to Hawaii, you can always try for a couple of great resorts in Southern California. Newport Coast Villas is wonderful, especially in the summer (it was actually intended to be DVC before it was sold to Marriott) and the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad is on my bucket list if I ever put something in II!

Look at renting from an owner on Tug. You can rent out your own DVC points to cover the cost.

Side question to others who might know - Do we have DVC priority in II? If we put 150 points in, can we exchange for a DVC resort that takes a lot more points to book normally? I have no intention of doing that, but just wondering.

How many points do you have? It will be more of a sure thing to rent out your excess DVC points (a sure thing in that you can definitely do it) and then rent a Marriott week (also a sure thing in that you can definitely do it). Its really a matter of whether it makes sense financially to do it that way. There's a decent chance it would make sense.

You might also want to consider Westin Kaanapali and Hyatt Kaanapali.

It looks to me like it would take maybe 300-340 points to exchange into a peak week in Hawaii. 300 points at $18/pt is $5400. You could definitely rent a Marriott, Westin and probably Hyatt 2BR prime season for less than that.

I say rent out your points and use the cash to rent the week you want from another owner.

Depending on your contract, you could do a vacation exchange or hotel exchange in Hawaii. If you haven’t already, I suggest viewing the II Resort Directory for the island you want to visit to see what Marriott properties are options. Then you can start running searches periodically to see if it ever comes up. I go to Hawaii every 2-3 years and I’ve always done RCI and now II exchanges for my accommodations. I always start looking two years out for the dates I want. I normally find the resort I want about a year out. You do have to be really committed to checking the site everyday to see if your property comes up. Sometimes they are gone in minutes. Here are the properties I now stay at when I travel to Hawaii: Oahu—Imperial Hawaii; Maui—Kaanapali Beach Club(now HGVC Kaanapali Beach Maui); The Big Island—Kona Coast Resort; Kauai—stayed once at Pono Kai Resort—wasn’t thrilled with it but it served my needs. As was mentioned, all resorts aren’t created equal. Good luck!

I don't believe you can exchange back in to DVC with DVC points. I see some OKW and SSR with my unbranded Interval week, but don't see any DVC inventory via the DVC portal.
