I was just looking for news about hurrican Katrina at the weather channel, when suddenly I saw this commercial about verizon DSL for 14.95.

I called Verizon DSL and change my currently subscription from 29.99 to 14.95.
I am now for the first time I am in a one year contract for 14.95 a month.

Wohoo, I have 15.oo extra dollars to add to my Disney vacation trip!! :rotfl:

That's a great price. It sure as heck beats the $42xx I'm paying for cable. Is it a limited time offer? Do you still have unlimited internet access at the rate?

I justed checked their website because we are paying $29.99. The speed on the $14.95 is slower than the $29.99. I don't know if that matters to some people.

I wish BellSouth would come down to those prices. They have come down some but not much.

What is faster, DSL or Comcast high speed?

I want to change my service next year but unsure of all this new stuff. In my area, DSL is not available right now but was just curious which was faster...

Hummmm. Well, I don't know what speed we currently have, but if the reduction in speed would be unnoticable (which is the way that it was when we supposedly went to a HIGHER speed), then I would be VERY interested in switching! I will give them a call tomorrow - the kids' first day back to school. :)

Half price is half the speed, but still faster than sbc 14.95 at 256k.

Stay with your 1.5 or higher speeds.

Staying with my 1.5 or higher will be great but guess what, I was paying 29.99 for the 1.5 speed and my connection will never pass the 798 speed and still had to pay 29.99 if I want it to continue using my verizon DSL.

So for me it is a good deal I do not have brand new phone verizon cables in my area (lucky you if you have good cables) and whenever I tested my connection saw it at 798 speed, and after testing I complained to Verizon and then, they will set it up above 798, but my whole dsl internet connection will go bad. then they will have to put it back to 798.

In conclusion I will have almost the same speed that I have now, but for a cheaper price . I wish that in the future they will fix whatever needs to be fixed in my area so I can really have 1.0 connection speed or above, and I will go back to 29.99.The lady told me yes you can go back to the 29.99 in the future. I will have to stick to the 14.95 and have the same old phone cables, same e-mail, same evrything. :sunny:

Huh? Can you explain this to computer illiterate morons like me? I have DSL (with verizon 29.99) and I foolishly assumed all DSL was the same. How would I know if it would make a difference for me? Thanks very much!

I also have Verizon DSL for $29.99/month. Would you please let me know how I can test my connection speed? I would really appreciate this! If my speed would be the same anyway, I would love to switch to the less expensive plan.

Okay here is where I spent most of last night (Sunday) reading about advantages and disadvantages for me about this offer and about testing my DSL speed one more time before deciding about my Internet connection:

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?start=80&catid=18&threadid=512042

"about testing the speed these may help you.

This web site list over 100 different sites where you can test you broadband internet connection speed.

http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm

Find one that close to your home and keep in mind your speed will be different each time you run a test and some tests sites work better than others.

This is the speed test site I like to use: http://www.testmy.net/

DSL speed Tweaking FAQ: http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/tweaks"

I hope this helps.....bye for now....

okay, I did the test and it told me I am at 1241 kbps or 1.2 mbps My d/l speed was 152 kb/s
It also said I may need help as I was running at only 28.22% of the verizon average

Anyone want to try and exlain what all that means to me?! :badpc:

Please? :teeth:

:confused3 I ran the tests but don't understand the results either.

Sorry, I wish that I could explain this to U before I go to sleep, but I am just in college triying to be a computer programmer. This may be a good question for computer networking people. I only know for a fact that you have a better dsl connection than me. When I tested my connection (a long time ago when I was having dsl problems, and yesterday, too) It only said 798 kbps for me. This means that I will be a moron if I continue to pay 29.99 for a crappy DSL connection that never goes near 1000 kbps. I think that I made a good choice by changing dsl from 798 to 768 kilobits. klbps means kilobits per seconds right? Kilobits and klbps on the test are the same thing?Same as the CNN article below? Look at me now I am asking questions again!

Yahoo-Verizon to offer cheap DSL
http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/internet/08/23/verizon.yahoo.dsl.ap/
"For $14.95, subscribers will be able to download Web pages via a digital subscriber line at speeds of up to 768 kilobits and upload data at 128 kilobits"

Okay, well my download speed was 1485 and my upload speed was 125...so I guess that means I'm getting my $30 worth. :confused3 I take it that if I switched to the 14.95 deal I would notice a difference.
