Paul Harvey (love him or hate him, LOL...I sort of like him) mentioned this AM that many (maybe most) of the many illegals marching yesterday (while taking that day off from work) in support of working here in America without regard to legal/illegal status, will also be celebrating Cinco De Mayo this Friday, with many taking the day off, making for a 3 day work week. :scratchin :confused3 :lmao:

(was that a run on sentence? :3dglasses)

Stuff like this makes me just want to sing, like the Godfather of Soul did in Rocky IV...Living In America :cool1: :woohoo: :clown:

Other countries must think we are nuts, LOL. :rotfl: :tilt:

ETA...I still say, illegal is not legal.

Do a google search for "Boycott Cinco De Mayo" - a lot of groups are calling for a boycott in backlash from the marches. Asking people not to go out to eat at immigrant resturaunts to celebrate.

Did Mr. Harvey mention that May 1 is also known as May Day or International Worker's Day? It's used to mark the anniversary of the 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago which, by the way, helped to establish an 8 hour work day.

Cinco de Mayo is just a bonus. ;)

Tough decision. Cinco de Mayo is for remembering Mexico's defeat of the French Army. :rolleyes1 :teeth:

(I'm going now.)

I boycotted Mexican food Monday and will boycott it Friday as well, being of French descent and all. :rotfl2:

I consume a lot of Mexican food. Soon they will notice. :lmao:

Maybe less people will be at the Mexican restaurants on Friday so more Margaritas for me. I can't help it, I like Margaritas.

They do!!! We've met people from several different countries in our travels, & we're definitely the brunt of many jokes. You should hear Mexico's joke about why they have very few military ships. The sad thing is, it's true. :sad2:

I'll be staying home on May 5th. There were just saying on the local news how people in certain areas of Orlando proper shoot off guns to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. I don't want to be any where near. Last year at New Years, a woman lost her eye from a wild gunshot.

By the way, I love Paul Harvey!

Dan, I agree with you 100%.

Other countries know we are nuts. Where else can illegals go and demand all the rights and services of legal citizens?

Hanname to you Dan. :teeth:

Hi Sadie,

Go google "French Employment Law." Trust me, in terms of three-day work weeks, America has nothing on the Europeans.

Well is funny, because not all Mexicans in USA don't celebrate Cinco de Mayo in restaurants and drinking, this is an American tradition, like St.Patricks day.

In Mexico the celebration is with a Parade like Memorial day or 4th of July parade.

hi dan!

i have to get my paul harvey fix everyday. love to here his take on things.

but i have to say that they may make jokes about us, but the biggest joke may be that they have to live in their countries, (well most of them, anyway), while we have the privilege of living in the greatest country on God's green earth. i wouldn't trade places with just about any of them. i think it's mostly a case of of nation envy.

You're right! Some of them may be envious, but I wouldn't call England or Canada horrible places to live. There's no reason for envy from them. I'm also quite sure the title of "the greatest country on earth" is a matter of opinion. While I was born & raised here & never intend to move from this country, I'm sure there's people from other countries who feel the same allegiance to their home. I would probably be more quick to dismiss it as envy, if it weren't all true. :sad2: Most people we've met have some great things to say about America. They also think many things that happen here are a joke. Hey, we've been an easy target the last few years.

Three times wrong:
-You don't live in the greatest country. Don't get me wrong: I don't say that any country is better than yours, but I know a lot of countries that are at least as good to live at as the USA. BTW, your attitude is one of the major sources for jokes about Americans as being humble is not exactly an American virtue ;)
-Earth wasn't created by a god
-Since spaceflight started Earth is referred to as the BLUE planet :teeth:

It may be new for you, but it's not only the USA where emigrants flee too, the European Union is 'under attack' too.
And BTW most Europeans like it to live here in Europe. I will do my 10th trip to the USA this year, but even though I could live and work there as I work for an American company (Which I already did for some weeks), I would never trade places either.

The only way us rich countries can stop the flood of immigrants is to help improve the quality of living in the countries those people are fleeing from.
We make it more attractive for them staying where they are than coming to us. This way everyone will win - them and us

Well said, thank you!!! And I want to emphasize that the good things I have to say about the USA outweigh the bad things - even though it looks like that guy in Pennsylvania Ave is doing his best to change that ;)

And BTW there are also many jokes our neighbors, the Dutch, tell about us. Jokes we tell about the French, etc.

BTW: Why doesn't Mexico have a Navy? :confused3
I'd like to know the punchline, please. If it's not PC to post it, you can send me a PM ;) Danke schön :wave2:

What's the big deal? Everyone defeats the French Army. :rotfl2:

well i know that it is hard to convey in black and white on a screen, but my tongue was a little bit in my cheek, not totally mind you, because i do happen to think that this is a great country. i did say that there were a few places i would consider immigrating to, but it is a short list, and sorry my german friend, europe is not on the list, mostly because of the weather. but i have seen the figures and do get news reports telling me what is going on in the old world. we have a latin invasion and you guys seem to have a moslem invasion, good luck to all of us.

but if this place is so bad, why do these people continue to come here by their own choice? i know that mexico needs economic development, but i don't know how you bring about such change in a country where the few that have don't want anyone else to have any. a mexican geology prof. from college told us over 25 years ago that they were sitting on oil fields that would make the saudis green with envy, but they wouldn't develop them because it would bring about a power shift in the country.

lastly, i'll let you believe that this "blue planet" just happened to fall into the only exact place that was needed to create and sustain life, and stay in orbit at just the right place to continue life, and i could go on, but i'll stick to my belief that a creator put this whole thing in place and makes sure that the whole thing continues to work.
