When I was at BCV, I asked them about adding on if I was interested in one of the "sold-out" resorts (specifically OKW). I wanted to know, should I get on a wait-list for points or just go the resale route. Well, although I was sure she'd encourage me to get on a wait-list because that way DVC gets the money for the sale, much to my surprise, she said I'd be much better off to go resale! "Well, I suppose you could try getting on the waitlist, but you 'd probably wait forever-the waitlist is as long as my arm! You'd be better off just going resale." Now I've heard the waitlist is often several months, but I don't consider that "as long as my arm". What do you think her motivation was for not wanting me to go through DVC, after all, she was a DVC employee?

I believe she is simply shooting straight with you. DVC has very little product at closed resorts and while they contend they are in an aggressive buy-back campaign, the Parent Co. is still in pretty tough shape. Purchases through the resale market are relatively painless. Without Disney's ROFR, the closings would be a snap.

I believe OKW has the most members of any DVC resort, so it would stand to reason that their waiting list for add-ons would be the longest.

Glad to hear you got the straight scoop from the CM...not something we always hear about DVC guides.

I waited months for an add-on at OKW. Just when I was giving up and thinking about a re-sale, DVC came through. I would say honesty too!

To add, the guides at DVC are usually very honest and straight forward. You may want to do both. Get yourself on the wait list and start looking for a resale that fits your needs. True add on size contracts that fit your needs can be hard to find so get as many feelers out as possible.

"Home resort doesn't matter"

"Occupancy limts are merely suggestions"

"You can stay wherever you want, whenever you want with these VB points"

"Sure, VB dues are highest now, but dues vary, VB was lowest once and may be again"

Juat wanted to add a few examples of DVC sales folk's honesty.

I was wondering, what is the advantage of getting add on pts from DVC versus resale? Some of the resale offers seemed quite good but maybe you are looking for a particular use year month or something?

Add on in your use year, add on for the exact number of points you are looking for and closing costs can become a factor.

$400 in closing costs on a 200 point contract is only $2 per point. $400 in closing costs on a 50 point add on is $8 per point.

Rich, that's why I said usually. I think even you will agree that usually the guides, or most guides, are very honest people and represent DVC appropriately. While the issues you post have happened, they are the minority of responses.

Although we AVOIDED the DVC booths like the plague for 3 years worth of trips to WDW because of the reputation the "Time Share Industry" has enjoyed. With fears of high pressure and deceptive sales practices, we CHEATED ourselves out of at least 2 years worth of wonderful DVC ownership, not to mention paying at least 10 dollars more per point. When we stayed at OKW on cash and were WOWed, not once were we ever approach by a salesperson. We then decided to CHANCE it and visit the DVC sales center. NEVER once did we experience any of the practices alluded to by another poster. I'm curious to know how many times the posters that complain about the DVC sales staff have personally been subjected to these types of pratices??

In fact our sales guide went out of her way to explain that yes we could stay onsite if we bought at VB or HH but we would not be assured of always getting the resort and accomedations we wanted at the 7 month window. She also was helpfull in determining what use year would be the most usefull for us.

I agree Dean. I think most Guides try to give DVC members the information necessary to make informed purchase decisions.

Thanks for the info.
I do have a gripe with my guide however. We were practically babes in the woods when it came to DVC about 10 years ago. We were sold all our points for the Sept use year and subsequently added more pts at okw and bwv also in Sept. Now I never get the opportunity of going to a dvc resort at Christmas time. Also my pts are worth less if I care to rent them since my home resort advantage is only really good in August missing the "good" month of July.

I agree somewhat with rich...the term "guide" is somewhat misleading. I mean are car sales people "guides"? No they are sales people. Thats why when we hit the DVC booth and took the tour and sat down w/ Larry Hope, I said it sounds good but let me take it home and read the fine print. What Larry told me was 95% true the other 5% was open to debate. But my point is he is a salesman not a "guide" per say.
We hear alot of talk about room requests and 7 month booking window or "it doesn't matter if you buy VB and want to stay at BWV during Christmas". You get what is in writing not what a salesperson tells you. Always ask a ton of questions if you are not sure, and do alot of research, this board is great for that.

icy, could you expand on these two points? I don't understand why you can't go to WDW at x-mas, or why you can't use home resort advantage for July.

I think you may be mistaken here, and you can do both of these things.

I'm also confused about the Christmas reference. There's no reason a Sept. Use Year should interfere with Christmas use. You could book and cancel with no penalty. You also have the same resort advantage for all 12 months. The only problem would be a late date cancellation in July since you'd have to use the points by the end of August.

wHEN I BOUGHT MY POINTS THERE WAS NO BOARD TO HELP ME. NOW I AM STUCK WITH TONS OF POINTS THAT ARE NOT VALUABLE TO ME. I GUESS WE TRUSTED RANDY TOO MUCH. THE SEPT USE YEAR REALLY STINKS. I THINK HE JUST NEEDED TO MEET HIS QUOTA AND SOLD ME POINTS FOR THE MONTH WE FIRST SPOKE TO HIM ON THE PHONE AND SUBSEQUENTLY BOUGHT POINTS FOR THAT MONTH. WHAT DUMMIES WE WERE!!!

icy, please post some specific reasons that you can't use your points. I think you are mistaken on this, and we can help you figure how to use your points. A september use year has nothing to do with using your points in December or July. Of course, as Pam mentioned, use year may matter when cancelling a ressie.

I'm confused and my concern is you don't understand the system and are suffering because of not understanding. If I'm off based, I apoligize in advance. You can certainly make Xmas reservations as you do not have to wait until you're use year to make reservations. Actually Sept is a good use year to make Novembers, December and Jan reservation. You just call in 11 months out and make them, day by day if you must. I can understand your second point about renting points for July but then again December seems to be just as popular. Even then, you can rent for the following July making those reservations the preceeding August even before your use year starts. The only problem with making reservations late in your use year (like July) is if you must cancel, you may not be able to reuse or bank the points. If you're looking at renting, just set you requirement accordingly like non refundable, 25% up front and the remainder due at a min of 90 days or early enough for your 100% banking window, which ever is longer.
