I read this article, and it really shows a day in the life of just one of those individuals shuttled off to a shelter in another state. She is trying to get situated in a new life, but the red tape is neverending.

I found it interesting that she used to run a homeless shelter for battered women in New Orleans, and now she is homeless. My heart was warmed that compassionate Texans are helping out of the goodness of the hearts, in addition to the Red Cross and FEMA aid.

I read the article. It was very interesting. This woman stated that she was a CEO. I hope she can rebuild her life.

Some of the comments in the comment section are a bit rough. I read one that was upset that she didn't want to go back to help clean up. I imagine that the workers are offered housing and read that clean up pay was between "$8 & $12 an hour". I wonder how many will go back and join the clean up?

A woman who had been the CEO of an organization which provided emergency relief to "survivors" can better use her organizational and managment skills to assist with rebuilding NOLA than working for $8 an hour "cleaning up". Last I knew, it looked like FEMA might have a high level opening. She might be the perfect choice.

I agree. She should be working in the shelter, perhaps. I am sure she has worked with children who have seen their mother during some bad times. Maybe she has some skills as far as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome?

I am happy, though, that they are offering jobs with the clean up. I think many people will take advantage of that. It will get them "back home", plus they can make a difference as far as rebuilding communities.

Does no one else find it kind of hard to believe that a former CEO would not have a dime to their name, even if they've been stripped of worldly possessions? No credit? Something doesn't add up. Sorry.

No, a CEO can run a non-profit. It's a title. That doesn't mean they are necessarily rich. Not all business owners/CEOs are the typical corporate types.

If she started the shelter, she probably put everything she had into it, perhaps received grants and donations and helped all the battered women she could. Not that unbelievable to me.

Not really--CEO's of small non-profits generally do not make vast sums of money. Additionally, you don't know what might have been her situation--perhaps she was divorced from a deadbeat who trashed their credit.

A lot of people live beyond their means, I used to work with a guy who made $125,000 a year, and never had gas money. He got himself into a credit card rut and had spent five years digging out, and had another five to go. The more you make, the more creditors want to give you.

Hmmmm..I guess that is strange. I wonder why she has no credit or money?

It said something about her having gold front teeth, with crosses stamped on them. What does that mean?

Maybe she was abused at one time herself and that is why she got involved with the shelter? I guess you never know.

Here is the quote from the article:
"I was the CEO and founder of Ester's Haven House, a homeless shelter in New Orleans

I read this statement as she was saying she was the CEO in jest. She started a shelter, therefore she was the CEO. Do you know how much a CEO of a homeless shelter makes? Not a lot.

My cousin is the "CEO" of a shelter for homeless and battered women. She inherited the house from her grandmother. She and her husband did not need the house so she turned it into a shelter. My cousin does not make any money running this shelter. She relies on donations to keep the doors open.

There was even a Extreme Home Makeover show about a lady who ran a shelter out of her home. She made no money from her "business" and was near poverty herself.

The story of this survivor does add up.

In one of the articles that I had read--a man walking up the street...walked up to a clean up crew and asked if they were hiring....he made $35/day before the hurricane...and I don't recall the exact number--but he will now make over $100 per day helping with clean up. :goodvibes

It could also mean that like a good portion of American--just didn't do her finances the best way possible. Hopefully a good many Americans will have this hurricane be a swift kick in the rear to get their financial lives in order (I'm talking about those that are not in the strike areas...not the victims themselves).

There was a man on TV last night who was helping clear the debris from the convention center in NO. He was SOOO proud that he was helping! He was doing a little happy dance on the sidewalk. It was a joy to see someone finding something to be glad about amidst the rubble.

I'd like to hope, but I'm not encouraged. If the sentiment I'm getting from a lot of people here is accurate, they're not putting a very high priority on individual preparedness.
