Hi Everyone! I need some help guestimating what DS's car insurance will cost him once he gets stationed. I offered to sell him my car but we want to make sure that insurance is not going to be crazy. I can only get quotes from MA (where I live) unless I have exact street address from elsewhere. I was hoping Geico or Progressive could estimate rates from a few different cities/states to see how they compare since we have no idea where he'll be stationed in April.

So, wonder if anyone else has someone with 3 years driving experience that could give me an idea what they are paying? Car is 1998 Jeep Cherokee Laredo, DS has been driving for a bit more than 3 years, and we want just the very basic/mandated insurance rates for a few different areas. If you can help, thanks! BTW, insurance in MA will cost him $800/year +-

First, if you go with just mandated rates you can pretty much kiss his future goodbye if he ever gets into an accident. It covers NOTHING. I wouldn't get coverage for anything less then 100/300/100, the cost difference is minimal.

Second, it sound like he is in the military, have him get on the USAA plan. You can't beat the prices, service or perks, especially for active military.

Third, what you are asking for is basically impossible-there are just too many variables to even give you a ballpark. In our area rates are pretty reasonable, but if you live in the next town over they are about 50% higher and if you live in the city proper, you can more then double your rates compared to what we pay just 15 miles away. Every major insurance company credit rates and those rates can vary by as much as 70% or more. I could tell you that a '98 Jeep in our area for a male under 25, collision only may run $100, for example, but that would be my rate with the best credit rating they offer, his could be has high as $250/month depending on his credit rate.

Have him call USAA and then it won't matter where he is stationed.

Thanks Golfgal, we'll look into USAA, this is the first I've heard of it. I'm surprised my insurance agent didn't mention it either. DS is just nearly 20 years old and has been in the USAF for a little more than a year but sold his truck before he left. Not having a vehicle has been hard for him and he really wants his own wheels again. Everything will depend on where he gets stationed of course but I will definately look into this USAA. Again, thanks.

He probably didn't mention it because he can't sell it, you can only get it through the military-but I don't know who to call about that. Ask LovemyGoofy-she is a wealth of military knowledge. I "THINK" you may be eligible for it as a family member of a military person too.

Go to www.usaa.com and register using his info. Once you get in, you can get quotes on whatever you need, site is very easy to navigate.

Just let him know that you have registered him... as you get a member number for all inquiries and transactions, etc...
