I just don't know what's expected here.(I definitely want to do SOMETHING, though) Our neice graduated with her doctorate degree this past weekend. (We received the announcement the day before the ceremony ) She lives 1,500 miles away. We are not close but we are "friendly". I know we sent money when she graduated high school, we sent when she graduated with her bachelor's, we sent a housewarming gift when she got her first apartment. I am not sure what is appropriate now. I know she is employed and making a great salary. She is actually going to build a house already. My son just graduated high school and our neice's parents, my sons aunt and uncle, sent him a generous $50 just the other day. My thought is that at the high school level folks give to help the college bound student with upcoming college expenses or if they're not going to college--helping them get started on their future. I really don't know in the situation with my neice. What is appropriate?

I would send her a card congratulating her on her success and maybe include a couple of photos of her at milestones in her life (if you have them) or one of her as a little girl. IMO, she is probably set financially (since she is already building a house of her own) and would appreciate the sentiment more so than money. She worked hard, and acknowledgement of that would probably mean a lot.

What about a nice doctor bag or a nice engraved stethoscope? My SIL just graduated as a CPA and I got her an engraved desk set from Things Rembered.

Maybe you could send her some flowers and a card.

I would send you a nice card congratulating her for all her hard work over the years and saying that you are so proud of her.

That will mean more than a monetary stipend.

I didn't encourage my d send out high school grad or college grad announcements because I thought it was too much like asking for money.
She will probably never forgive me :rotfl: , but we could afford to send her to college.

I think that sending money for the high school grad is appropriate tho, and then again when the kid marries...but all the inbetweens would break the bank for most of us!
