Talking about escow accounts...and stuff got me wondering..what property taxes are around the country.

I will go first-Central Illinois
3800 sq feet-aprox value 180,000-taxes almost 4000 a year!

Southern Arizona, 3000 sq foot, $250,000 , $2800/year. (and my son only has one class he gets a book in at school 7th grade! and we are in a good school district! )

Just bought a new home in Mississippi --- about 3500 square feet worth about $200,000 and the taxes are $3300 per year.

Western suburb of Boston............2900 sq. ft...........$6,500/yr.....

Our house is about 2400 sf, and I think the taxes are about $1400. I'm not sure though since ours is in an escrow account in our monthly payments. I don't really pay much attention to it since I don't have to write the check.

house cost $279,000 and we pay about $4500/yr in taxes.

interesting note: our village straddles two counties. When we were looking at houses, we liked the northern end better but it is in Lake County and the property taxes would have been $1000 more for a comparable house.

Guess the BEST way to know how we compare is to ask what everyone's total millage is around the country. I could tell you what I pay here, but it does not mean anything unless I would know what I would pay for the same thing elsewhere.
Truthfully though, I don't even KNOW our millage.
Also, I see that EVERYONE describes their home in square feet. Around here, we just describe them like this - 2 story/ 4 bedrooms/ 1.5 baths. I could not tell you our square footage to save my soul.

My FIL is HIGH... I would say in the $8-10K range! (He's in NJ!)


Ours was high years ago in Ohio, it was in the $3K range 5-6 years ago.. I shudder to think what it would be now.

Comparable houses on our street are running about $1500-1700 for 1/2 year, so about $3K a year.
