(Inspired by gepetto) How do you feel about desinger knockoffs?

Preshi cant your designer friend get you his stuff for free or near it?? I would be on him about that!! :)
Im not big on knockoffs. I get what I can afford. If I was walking around with a Prada purse I promise NOONE thinks its real!!!!! lol :)

But you know what, that's the beauty (sorry Beauty, no pun intended ;) ) of the American way.

There's always a buyer! Somewhere, someplace!

Prada is a high profile designer.

Whenever they feature the outfits of the Oscars, lots of the stars go for Prada.

Well maybe he will come out with a purse or shoes or something that us regular gals could wear!! :)

Its disgusting huh? The waif look seems to be coming back in... SIGH... the only way I'll look like that is if they build a time machine.

Preshi, if you don't mind my asking, what designer?

I have some favorites, just wondering if it's one of them. Or is he/she west coast only so far?

The waif look seems to be coming back in... SIGH... the only way I'll look like that is if they build a time machine.

Oh please the only time I looked as small as these girls I was anorixic!!! I was noticing on my soap (GH) one of the characters who is usually very petite anyways looks soooooooo small now too small!! (and I like small) But she looks sick it makes me sad!!:(

I'm wondering if people are getting confused about what a knock-off really is. A knock-off is when a manufacturer imitates a style by a designer, such as ABS imitating designer dresses. This is not illegal, and is actually quite common in the fashion industry. After events like the Oscars, Emmys, or even celebrity weddings, many dresses are copied by clothing manufacturers. Victor Costa is a well known designer who makes less expensive copies of couture dresses. Diane Von Furstenburg's famous wrap dress has been imitated over and over again. The jewels Cartier designed for the Duchess of windsor are also often imitated. I know I'll never own the original, but I have no problem wearing a copy of the diamond panther pin the Duchess of windsor wore on her shoulder. Using the copyrighted logo without the designer's permission is something completely different, and is illegal in the united States. I worked in the fashion industry for many years (even have a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion retail believe it or not;) ), and also worked as a buyer for a department store, buying everything from fine, bridge, and costume jewelry, to women's active sportswear, blouses, and coats. I saw many knock-offs in the showrooms I frequented, and bought many of them for the stores. So wear your knock-offs with pride-my originals are side-by-side with my knock-offs in my closet:D

The waif look...*shudder*

I really don't have a problem with it, provided that the owner is aware it's not the real deal. I'm not really too hung up on fashion (& certainly not purses! lol), but when it comes to electronics I try to go for the better quality item. I usually buy Apple or Sony. They are a little more expensive, but tend to be a lot more durable & last longer.

BTW, Preshi, your friend is pretty cute. :)

I don't even know what the "cool" brands are, so if I bought a knock-off, I wouldn't know it.

Like I said on the previous purse thread, I spend $5-10 on purses. I'm a thrift-store and sale shopper, and I've tricked a few people into thinking I had lots of money (not purposely) and yet almost never wore "brands." (Esprit IS a "brand" to me!)

People who feel they have to buy expensive labels or their fake counterparts are lame. I haven't felt that way since the 8th grade.

Of course, I won't wear those cheap tacky "Florida" Mickey t-shirts that you find at tourist shops! Gasp!

LOL!! :) That is because you are a Floridian!!:):)
I think it is just not cool to wear a State shirt if you live there.
When I go to Maine I always buy a t, ANd my cousins make fun of me!!:( lol :)

DocR, that's a pretty lousy (and lame) thing to say about people here who have admitted that they buy expensive labels (or fakes for that matter.)

I don't feel that I have to buy anything. I like Dooney & Bourke, I can afford it, and do so because I want to. I like the durability and the style. Not because I feel that I have to.

I guess I could say the same thing, that people who only spend $5-10 on a purse are lame themselves. But I wouldn't stoop that low.

Oh great - now I'm a lame loser.......;)

Folks, this boils down to individual taste and preference. In re-reading this thread, Preshi's original question was about designer KNOCK-OFFS. I believe that kteacher's post defined what a knock-off is: it's not an illegal copy with a fake label being sewn in (although those obviously do exist).

I like to watch the TV shows that show the stars wearing those fancy gowns to the Oscars, Emmys, etc. But in my life, jeans and cords with hiking boots are my choice for casual wear and my professional attire is pantsuits and dresses. I'm not a name-label type person and quite frankly, I wouldn't be able to tell if you were wearing one. That's just me. If you like high fashion, designer clothes, knock-offs, or discount department stores, thrift stores, whatever - go for it.

IMO, there is no right or wrong choice. It all boils down to what you like to wear and if you're comfortable in wearing it.

I stopped reading after page one when people were getting down on people who buy knockoffs, pretty much calling them designer wannabe's. Now I've got this to worry about - when I'm out shopping for clothes etc. now I have to be careful that I don't accidently buy a designer knock off. This is going to be hard since I know nothing about designer fashion! Sigh! Although I don't give a hoot about not wearing designer stuff, it does seem harsh to me that people will be judging me as a designer wannabe if I just happen to pick up a bargain. Ouch!

I have no clue who most of the designers are that are named here. To me, clothes are just clothes...something that covers the body. Hey, I'm out of bed and dressed. You ain't gettin' any more than that.

Because of my pragmatist living style, when I find a shirt, skirt, dress, sweater, slack or shoe that I like, I'll buy 5 or 6 of them in different colors so that I don't have to think about mixing and matching. (I'll only get about three of the shoe - brown, black and navy) I can just pull it out, wear it and throw it in the hamper when I'm done. It doesn't get any easier than that and leaves more energy for working on life rather than what's covering my nakedness.

If people want to make fun of what I'm wearing, I wouldn't know it because I'm not into gossip, either. If someone at work tells me so-and-so was commenting on my wardrobe, I simply shrug and get back to the project I'm working on.

I'm also with Rafiki on the purse thing...I buy the cheapest out there and when it starts to wear out, I get another one. A purse is a bag holding the things I need to carry with me. No more. No less.

Guess I'm pretty strange, but it works for me. :D

I buy what I like, not what anyone else likes. If I like a designer bag that much I will buy it, if I dont like the style it stays in the store. doesn't matter who designed it, or what it costs.

It's just a purse for heavens sake, not a reflection of who I am.

Buy a knockoff, buy a walmart bag, just buy what you like.

simple.

I buy what I like and what I can afford.

I am therefore, not a slob, snob or a slave to fashion. I am true to myself and my style.

I'm feeling pretty good now!
;)
