(Inspired by gepetto) How do you feel about desinger knockoffs?

Redneck raises her hand here!!!!

I buy my purses from Wal-Mart - heck, I even buy some of my clothes from there! (and some from Bon-Ton, Boscov's, Kaufmann's, and Penney's.) I am lucky if my shoes and purse match, usually they don't.

I like hiking boots and sandals and I slouch when I walk. I also buy cheap bras.
I feel like such a loser..........
Pam

count me as one that would never buy a knock off. I am not into many designers anyways, but if it mattered to me I would buy the original.

Ok maybe I don't get where you are coming from. You say you don't want to be talked about behind your back for being a "slob" so you buy a Gucci knockoff to sport around town so you don't look like a "fashion victim" but no one in LA would ever make a comment about the knockoff or the real thing because they are so "laid back" and "not snotty." You have so lost me. Let's just leave it at you can wear the cheap imitation knockoffs in LA with all the cooler-than-thou westcoasters, and I will wear the original here with all the stuck up socialites ok? ;)

My goodness people are so touchy today. When I originally replied to your thread I was telling you how I felt about knockoffs, which, in case you forgot, was the question you asked. My position was I do not like them. I gave my reasoning and that was that. You are the one being all defensive here and putting down "slobs" who either can not afford the originals, or don't want to look like a poser by buying a knockoff. Buy them or don't buy them, I could careless.

And if you don't care so much about telling people you are wearing imitation clothing and accessories why bother buying them in the first place? I still hold the position that you only buy fakes to make people think they are the originals. There is no other reason that holds water. It isn't because they are such a good quality of material. And if the reason for buying things is to impress people so much why would you ever go around telling people they were fakes?

I got you ALL beat!

About 95% of my wardrobe is bought at Goodwill. I look FABULOUS, everyone thinks I spend thousands of dollars a year on my clothes, and I really spend a total of about $70 a year. It's all theater, my friends.

First off I didn't buy it...my MIL did.

Secondly you have me confused... but thats normal for me. ;)

Thirdly I never said people who dont have purses with desingenr names were slobs... if you match and look clean you aren't a slob that day... I have slobby days. People can think what they want. If I look good to myself and carry myself well I know I wont get the comments. I am very self concious which comes from years of teasing as a child.

Fourth and last ( thank god huh? ;) ) I only have 4 purses. 3 from esprit which I get more nice comments about esp the one that cost $3.00 LOL and 1 my MIL bought that the fake... All I was trying to say in a round about way is I have no problem with the fakes. I dont think they drive prices up... I could be wrong but oh well.

I love digging through vintage clothes... I got a really cute brown velvet jacket there for $2.50 that I get compliments on all the time. :)

Why should it really matter if people are talking about you behind your back about fashion? I've bought real designer labels before and I've bought the knock off. My current wallet is Nine West I think.
I don't think I've ever hung out with people who sit there and watch people and comment/laugh at the nerve to have a knock off.
It doesn't matter what the person holds it's the person holding it!
I like to be fashionable for me not to be talked about.

ROFLOL Pam! I thought I saw you the other day when I was shoping at Bon-Ton's! We look a lot alike! :p I was the one rifling through the discount racks. :p

As long as you like what you bought, whether it be name brand or knock off - go for it! To each their own!
:D

I'm just thanking God that I wouldn't know a real Gucci from a fake one if they were both sitting on my face. Who the hell cares if someone wants to use a fake purse?

(not saying I don't like Gucci, in fact I was excited to see my mom found my real one I got in high school. You know, so I could be a "real" Italian!!)

Andrea, you wanna be a real Italian, you gotta have lunch with these guys first!

Blondie, that's pretty scary because that actually looks like Sunday lunch with my uncles.:p

It's copyright infringement and it is illegal. Will you also buy pirated software and video games at the flea market?

I think there's a difference between buying knock-off designer articles and buying pirated software.

I'm not going to buy a $15,000 Rolex, that's it, end of story. If I buy a $50 knock off Rolex I'm hurting absolutely no one.

I AM going to buy computer software and the like, I consider it wrong to buy pirated software because then I really am ripping off somebody, (The holder of the copyright).

When you but the fake $5Tommy Hilfiger shirt ,$10 RayBan sunglasses, $30 Coach purse etc.... you ARE hurting a manufacturer/designer. The same as you are when you buy pirated software.

I'm curious as to why you quoted me when you made this post.

Yes, If I were to buy a pair of $30 RayBan sunglasses I WOULD be hurting the designer, and it's wrong. But, that is only because I MIGHT buy RayBan sunglasses, (or Maui Jim). My buying a $50 Rolex WOULDN'T cause harm, (directly), to the manufacturer because the chances of my buying a real Rolex is nil.

if they were hurting that badly they'd lower their prices to compete... I don't forsee them doing that anytime soon. I highly doubt large name designers are hurting that bad everytime someone buys a knockoff... All it takes is one person to buy one of their regularly  priced items to make up for it...

Mish19, I've never hung out with people who sit there and watch people and comment/laugh at the nerve to have a knock off either. It's catty.

I agree Mish19, it doesn't matter what the person holds, it's the person holding it.

That said, knockoffs are no big deal to me.

Preshi, you looked fabulous in your picture. :D

Shine on!

I don't buy designer or knock-off items.. I can find much better things to spend my money on - like memories at Disney World that last a lifetime!!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Because you said there was a difference between buying designer articles and pirated software. I think it is a similar situation.

Bob, I don't think your $50 fake Rolex will harm the manufacturer simply because of the $15K purchase price of the "real" item. However, with software and the majority of the clothing that is being duplicated, we are looking at items in the $50-$300 (retail) price range. In the end, the loss suffered by the manufacturers is passed onto the consumers.
