Ok, I want to begin by saying this is not a rant, nor a gripe or even a complaint. This is just a post to help others be more advised when it comes to insurance. We went to US and stayed in the Royal Pacific and we had a great time. We would not have changed anything including the choices we made so there is no complaint...
So here goes...
We booked our trip through Universal and took their insurance plan to cover us in case something happened. We DID NOT READ IT nor did we ever get anything to read that I am aware of. Maybe there was something on the email that I could click and I didnt click it. I dont recall.
Well our trip was from 08/22 - 08/27. We drove from NY. The whole trip from the food to the hotel to the parks was wonderful. No complaints at all. Unfortunately we went at the same time as hurricane Irene. We watched the weather reports all week because at first it was supposed to hit Florida (Orlando). then the hurricane changed direction and it hit all the east coast states besides Florida. (Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, NY). Most all of those states announced a state of emergency. The Hurricane was supposed to hit Georgia and then move up the coast starting on Sat 08/27. That was the day we were leaving and we knew there would be no way to get home that day. Our 2 choices were to stay longer (I wish) or leave early. We decided to leave on Friday Right ahead of the storm (By a few hours) and we made it home safely.
We filed a claim with the insurance because we believe the hurricane is what prevented us from staying to our planned stay. Since there was the state of emergency in all states including my own (NY) we believed we had a good case for insurance.
Turns out that with the insurance the only way a weather related event is worthy of a claim is if it hits the exact place where you are staying.
While I understand this, I thought that under these circumstances where we could not possibly get home there should have been approved.
As I stated above... this is not a complaint or knocking anything. We had a great time and even under the same conditions would do the same thing. I just wanted to share the experience so others will know what is covered and what isnt when it comes to insurance (at least weather related)
