Information about Stanley Hotel Estes Park Colorado

Thanks to everyone for the info. I too have read all the posts on many diff sites and found good and bad. My family is really interested in the old classic, "haunted" hotels. We have stayed at the Menger, and the St. Anthony in San Antonio. Also, there is one in Phoenix, but can't think of the name. We like the classic-period feel of the old hotels. I personally love the antiques, and all the woodwork and details that most of these old places have. I think the facilities will be acceptable for a few nights. We are also going over to Winter Park Ski Resort for a few days too. I just know that many treasures not to be missed are overlooked by tourists. Hoping to get a leg up on places to eat, trails to hike, etc.

Have you experienced any paranormal events in those hotels? I find that stuff fascinating!

This hotel is beautiful. My DH and I have never stayed there but we love to go there and eat breakfast in their restaurant. Don't forget to go to the Rocky Mountain National Park. I doubt you will be able to go all the way up and over on Trail Ridge Road due to the snow, but it is still a very beautiful area. There is also Horseback riding you can do. You have to get the fresh salt water taffy in Estes, very good! There is hiking all over the Rocky Mountain National Park but I am not sure what trails would be good in March as I usually wait until summer to hike.

Hopefully it will snow and you can go snow tubing, that is always a blast!

I just thought of another thing for you to do while in Estes Park. Since you mentioned you like old places and antiques, etc.
You might enjoy a visit to the Baldpate Inn, another place DH and I went just to look around.
The Key Room is really neat... read about it on the website and see if is something you think that might be worth a visit.

Edited to add:
We love hiking at RMNP, but we go in the summer so I don't know what is open in March.
Here is info from the RMNP website on Winter hikes:

I like the Cub Lake hike. Not sure if it is open during winter but my favorite hike is the hike from Bear Lake to Emerald Lake.

As for the hotel being 'haunted' I do know this: my parents stayed at the Stanley for their honeymoon in June 1949 and they were never aware that the hotel was supposed to be haunted. My wife and I visited the Stanley a couple of years ago: beautiful place indeed; however, we stayed nearby in a cheaper place.

We just returned from a vacation to Estes Park last week.

Some of the places that we like to eat at are
Mama Rose's --wonderful Italian food
Pappy's -- which is next to Mama's, good for lunch, as Mama's is only open for supper.
Egg and I -- near the hotel for breakfast--this is the first time we tried it, but was very good and reasonable for the area.

We got some choclates, and carmels at Laura's candies on the main street, under the red canopy--these are some of the best candy I have had, and I can't resist a candy store wherever we travel.

Enjoy your time, it is a great place to visit.

Wow, sounds great! We will be in Estes Park the first full week of December--can anyone tell me how the weather will be then- better, worse, or the same as spring break time???? We will not be staying at the Stanley, but will be doing their ghost tour!:yay: LOVE Ghost Hunters!!!

Hi! We have had a couple of experiences in the San Antonio Hotels. We stayed in the John Wayne Suite a couple of years ago. There are two bathrooms in this suite, and both bathroom doors locked themselves at the same time. My son was inside one, and my brother in the other. The lock was a typical slide, bolt lock that could not be locked accidentally. The locks were not bolted at anytime nor was there any other type of lock yet niether door would open. One started beating on the door and yelling, and then my brother did the same thing a couple of minutes later. This went on for a good two minutes and then all of a sudden both doors released. This was a three room suite, and bathrooms were situated on opposite sides of the suite with a room in between them. We tried to get the doors to stick to duplicate and we could not find a way to make the doors stick, let alone both doors at the same time. What was it???

The Menger hotel has an assistant manager named Ernesto Malacara. He was in the bar talking to us about some of the hauntings there at the hotel. He showed us a black and white picture taken there at the bar of a chambermaid, Sallie White whom had been murdered and later died at the Menger. The only thing was the picture had been taken approx two weeks before we visited. Personally we did not have any experiences here.

We stayed at the Emily Morgan in San Antonio, which years ago was a hospital. I have a friend who was taking pictures in the halls and on the top floor which at one time was the morgue for the hospital. He got a really good picture of a woman holding a small child in her arms. She was dressed in period clothing, and had her hair piled high on her head. You could make out the child but not as detailed as the woman.

So were are hoping to have an experience, but it just doesn't always happen. Either way looking is alot of fun.
