Looking in to getting a Sirius Radio here. I am sure some Disers can help!

However this whole thing has me confused:confused3 , and I don't know anyone who has one! Suprisingly very limited info on the internert concerning these.

Is it worth it?

Is the antenna easy to hook up in the car?
Where does the sound play through?
How is the sound quality?
Is it worth buying the Sirius boombox for home?

Anything else I need to know and not asking!

Thanks:thumbsup2

I have XM not Sirius. I have it in my car. I love it and think it's worth every penny! The antenna is easy to hook up (or so DH says) Sound plays through the radio speakers. I don't listen to the radio in the house so just have it in the car. (You're going to be spending too much time watching your HDTV when your in the house...no time for a radio!)

You should compare the two companies for what they offer...like XM v=carries all the baseball games, but I think it's SIrius that has the football game.

With your long commute, I think you would love it!

Hi DU! So satellite radio has finally found its way to the top of the mountain huh!

I have Sirius so I can listen to the King of All Media!:thumbsup2

I have the portable one, I forget which one it is I think its like the S150 or something. I never actually hooked the antenna up, I just pop it up on the roof when I hook it up. You pick a radio station that your not using for the satellite stations to come through & it comes through your radio. I don't have one for at home or work. Just the car.

I have both Sirius and XM (XM at home, Sirius in both cars). Sirius is very easy to hook up, but most stores will install free or very cheap with your purchase. Go that route for fewer headaches (I think I paid $10 to have Circuit City put it in DW's car).

Satellite radio is far superior to terrestrial radio. For music, you have commercial free radio (for the most part) and with talk radio or sports you have significantly fewer commercial interruptions. You will lose signal in tunnels, heavily wooded areas and occasionally around tall buildings. That can be frustrating.

I prefer Sirius to XM. I love baseball, which is XM's only real advantage, but there are 162 regular season baseball games a year; unless you are a fan of a team from another city, you can probably make due with missing the few games per year that you might be traveling outside of your team's radio network. Sirius has the NFL, NBA, NASCAR & most Colleges. Sirius also has completely commercial free music (I don't know why XM is running some commercials now, but it drives me crazy). Sirius has fewer channels of hip-hop than Sirius, but that doesn't bother me. Sirius has NPR, Radio Margaritaville (an exclusive Jimmy Buffett and more station), an exclusive Elvis station, Howard Stern (100 and 101), Martha Stewart and Playboy. XM has Oprah (not daily, and only for a half an hour, DW was very disappointed in that!), ABC News & Opie and Anthony. I can't remember what other exclusive content XM has.

Worth it? YES, YES, YES!
Antenna... a breeze
Sound from your radio
Sound quality is good, but not CD quality like they say
Boombox? Why? Just get a home docking kit to hook into your stereo - unless you want to carry that box with you when needed.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Oh, I should add, if you don't have a tape deck, you need to use a frequency on the radio to get the Sirius into the car radio .... Or you can get it hardwired.... more $$$.... If you have a tape deck, you just need a tape deck adapter.... about 10 bucks....

And I "think" some models have built in FM signal transmitters built in, so you may not even need any special equipment...

I been missing my Stern fix so Sirius was the choice. Also for the Football. And My nephew thinks the Elvis channel is the greatest thing since....EVER!

I have a Tape deck in my car!

The BoomBox...Because the Home stereo is in the LR....and the TV is on allllllll day long there. I wanted something that a bit more portable, bedrooms, pc room, workshp, by the pool in the summer...etc.

I was "this close" to getting one in Wal-Mart today...but the kid working there had nooooo answers too any of my questions!:confused3

Sound quality will depend on what method you use to hook it up.

FM Modulation will have about the same - maybe slightly lower quality than "regular" radio.

If you connect it via wire hookup, I would pretty much say it's CD quality ( Car CD player quality - not expensive home theatre CD quality, lol )

I started with XM via the MyFi in my Dodge Ram. I actually liked Sattelite radio so much I ended up purchasing the full Dodge OEM Sirius system so that it would look "stock" Depending on what vehicle you have, you may have this choice too.

Anything Diamler/Chrysler = Sirius.
Anything General Motors = XM

It's more expensive to go the last route ( OEM Equip ) but has the best quality and doesn't have the "aftermarket" look of a regular XM or Sirius unit.

I love mine. It was a Christmas present. My dh put it in the car for me and he said that it was not hard to run the anttena at all. I play mine thru my tape player and it sounds great. You can but a cassette adapter at Wal-Mart cheap. I already had one for my portable Cd Player that I used before I got Sirius. I love the Big 80's and the Hair Metal channel. Also I was able to get my radio off of Ebay. IF you would like to know which store on Ebay that I got it from feel free to PM me and I'll tell ya.

I'm a Sirius subscriber as well...you'll love Stern on satellite! The show is so much better, especially without the drops from 'ol Dead Air Dave on terrestrial.

As far as getting a boom box or car stereo, why not get both? Sirius is running a promotion right now where if you by one radio and subscription at regular price (say the boom box), you can sign up online from a free car transmitter and a 2nd discounted subscription ($6/month). Believe me, after experiencing satellite, you'll think the extra $6/month is nothing!

Beware of horrible customer service though. I ordered a Sirius radio for my DH for Christmas and the problems started with them immediately, plus I read about more on the DIS... too late!

When I first ordered the radio, I should have received something like $40 in discounts, but the discounts were $10 off. I spent a week trying to call and e-mail them to find out why, but kept getting a huge runaround until I just gave up.

Then when DH went to install his radio, he found out that the DC adapter had come broken. He spent another two weeks off and on calling them and e-mailing them and getting a runaround. He eventually just said "screw it" and he's going to purchase another adapter himself. :sad2: I know it's not that expensive, but if that's how bad customer service is over a small problem, I'd hate to deal with them over anything bigger.

I have one in my car: the Starmate 4. I love it! I got the car kit, so it plays through an "empty" radio station. I never have to change the station on my commute all around Atlanta, as I had been warned, but if this is an issue, you can get the tape player adaptor that some other posters have mentioned.

I was reluctant to "pay" for radio, but now wonder why I waited so long! I drive 3 hours round trip to work, and now don't know how I lived without it. My mom has XM and also loves hers, but she secretly covets my Margaritaville station! My DD loves the Elvis station. I've been listening to Howard Stern in the AM, which I didn't think I'd like but am now addicted to!

I was also pondering the boombox but haven't gotten it because you can listen to many of the stations online, so I've been doing that instead. There's also a home kit that plugs into your existing stereo.

DH just purchased the Starmate 4 and the Boombox. Everything works great and car installation a breeze. He bought the Boombox because in the summer we spend our Sundays at the lake in BFE and can't get a Nascar station. Now he will never have to miss a race!!!!

We have it and we love it. I just brought my husband the boombox for home. He uses all day long while working on projects.

We took my car last night to go out and missed having the sirius. We have to get a docking station for my car.

Hi DisUnc!!!! :wave2:

Dan and I both have lifetime subscriptions to Sirius. He hooked it up, so I cannot answer how easy/difficult it was, but he did not complain about it being difficult.

As far as quality, we love love LOVE our Sirius. We've had it for over a year now and we will NEVER go back to commercial radio again. The choices of music are practically endless, and the comedy stations are great.

We purchased a more expensive receiver, one that can alert you when your favorite artist or song is playing on another station...cannot tell you how priceless THAT is! It's like my own private nudge whenever Barenaked Ladies are playing.

I could go on and on and on, but I'll summarize instead:

BUY IT! You'll love it!

P.S. Peanut says hi.

i got sirius for bubba the love sponge, he's on the howard stern channels in the late afternoon. I drive a lot for my job and regular radio just doesn't cut it! also, i'm a big howard stern fan.

i have the replay. i had a kid i know install it for me in the car. the antenna is magnetic so it just holds to the roof of the car, ran it through the weather stripping, under the pedals and behind the dash. very easy.

the replay has a memory of 30 faves, which can be an artist, a song, or team. also it saves the previous hour of whatever you listen to as long as you don't change the station. so when you hear a song you love you can just replay it! or, if you're listening to howard stern and have to leave the car for a few minutes you can go back to what you missed.

mine has an internal FM transmitter. so no indoor boombox is required. just plug it into the wall, use the 2nd (mine came with 2)antenna for in-house and tune to the correct FM station on any radio/stereo you want. SUPER easy!

one thing though.... i wanted to buy a lifetime subscription but then you have to pay $75 if you ever want to change radios!

one more thing... beware if you have small kids... because it is totally unrestricted, there are alot of curse words thrown out. i believe only 2 stations are censored.

I have the Sirius S50 and it's docked in my car. DH installed it in about 20 minutes with no problems. I love it! I don't have a docking station in the house, but I probably will get one eventually. I do take it out to listen to it while I'm working out though (using head phones). Mine's also an MP3 player (don't know if they all are though). So I can record my own music on it and also record songs from the radio.

If you are a AAA member go to www.aaa.com/sirius and you get a much better deal. I was able to get the Sportster and the boombox for $137 after the $30 rebate. Then they gave us a free Stratus so we hooked that one up to the home stereo system with the home kit. They were both pretty easy to set up.

Thanks to ALL!....................even Peanut!:goodvibes

YUP! I have AAA...and they offer some really nice discounts! Gonna order through them. :woohoo:

(why would anybody NOT have AAA?????):confused3
