Can someone please explain these to me? I was looking into selling some of the custom outfits I make for my DD on ebay to make some extra money, that is when I discovered “pageant wear”. Many of the outfits are selling for up to $65-70 for casual wear (ruffled embellished Capri and tank/halter top sets). How many casual outfits would you need for a pageant? Is that the average price range for this type of outfit? The outfits are adorable but the prices seemed outrageous. I was just curious on how much someone would spend on outfits for a pageant. Do they have pageants year round or is there a pageant season?

Sorry for so many questions, I was just amazed by the amount of money that appears to be spent.

Thanks!

Amy

It's ridiculous. Parents will pay hundereds of dollars for pageant dresses. It's a big business. I know a mom who used to do it, and she shelled out thousands before she her dd finally grew tired of it.

I don't know anything about it but it sure sounds like the kind of business to get into. I hope someone can give you the info you need.

Well, I think they go on all the time from what I understand. When DD was little she had this ringlet hair all over her head and the greatest personality. We had her repped by a couple of modeling agencies and one of them really wanted her to get into the pageant "scene" or whatever. The whole idea kind of creeped me out and we were totally not into it, commercials or print ads were fine but not a pageant. Anyway, yeah, it was big bucks to get into it and seemed to involve a lot of travel to various pageants all over the country and stuff.

If you could make clothes and sell them on ebay for that market, I bet you would make a bundle. Maybe you could do a search on Google and see what you can find out about the pageants themselves and go from there.

.

I watched a show on HBO about the whole beauty pagent scene and little children and it made me ill! I forget the name of it but what these parents make these kids go through is disgusting..most do it for themselves, not for the kids!

I saw that show too. One of the families they were following spent around $20,000-$30,000 a year for all the pagent stuff - outfits, fees, training, travel and so on. The kids did not seem too happy and in my opinion I it seemed some of the parents were "borderline" abusive in the way they were pushing thoses kids.

My mom got a comp copy of a Pageant magazine when she was Mrs. St. Augustine--I was taken aback by the tv show you guys are talking about--but I was DISGUSTED with what I saw in that magazine. These are not kids--these are pint-sized barbie dolls. The kids in this magazine are all artificial. I think I saw on that pageant show them mom was talking about how it was just pretend and her daughter knows it is just for fun. I'm not buying it. Not sure what is fun about 5 pounds of mascara on a 4yo's eyelashes.

I do think you could make an absolute bundle embelleshing inexpensive clothing. If you web search the pageant circuit--you will find all sorts of pics of the girls (and boys) in sportswear--which have nothing to do with actual sports btw ;).

Living Dolls: The Making of a Child Beauty Queen was the name of it.

It was an eye opener.

This is a personal pet peeve of mine, because we have a family member involved. Brooke is DH's cousin and a beautiful little 4 year old. But the make-up, the eyebrow tweezing, all the hairspray, etc. makes me a tad ill. She doesn't look like a little girl, she looks like a doll. Here is her head shot:

Is that site for real?? Those pictures all look like plastic doll heads!!

There is another tv show, it comes on Bravo sometimes, Showbiz Moms and Dads. That show makes me sick. :guilty:

which one is she? There are alot of little kids on that page that look like dolls. It kinda scares me.

:earseek: those kids look like they've been airbrushed!

Brooke is the third head shot....she was the "Level 3 Ultimate Grand Supreme Winner", and yes she's real. Like I said, she's an adorable little girl. I don't think she needs all that to make her pretty.

My neice has been in 3 pageants. Two were small ones at the mall here in Kansas. Then she went on to State Finals. It was small too. They weren't allowed to wear makeup. We didn't spend a fortune on her clothes, we just got her cute outfits at Dillards.

There is no beauty pageant season. It's basically year round. I think you could make good money selling sportswear and other outfits on ebay.

Ok that freaked me out

And they're how old? 4 years???

Be afraid...be very afraid!!

Oh my!! I know that is how they are 'supposed' to look as I have watched that documentary (Living Dolls) as well. I have always wanted to know whatever happened to the girls featured. The one girl (Swan was her name-big surprise there) just seemed so sad. Her (teenaged) brother was going to jail or something and the mom was just like 'oh well, my 5 year old has a pageant'. This is too weird. Baby girls with fake teeth and hair and tons of makeup. Also, have you ever *really* looked at the mothers of these girls? They are...well, they are usually not 'made-up' women. They are usually quite the opposite.
Makes my skin crawl!
