Can someone who has been recently tell me whether these are sufficient to really clean up before going out to dinner, or are they designed just to get the sand off of you?

We are contemplating a dinner reservation right after our day here. We will have a cabana, so I can bring a bag with a change of clothes, soap and shampoo. But they private showers/changing areas and are there really long lines at the end of the day? I believe we can swim until right up to 5:30?

Thanks.

There was always a long line towards the end of the day when we went in December and August. They do have shampoo and soap in a dispenser in the shower. I always felt clean enough to go out after cleaning up. I don't usually use a hair dryer, so having damp hair when leaving was not an issue for me. It's a great place to relax and enjoy. And yes, you can stay until closing, as we were told the park was closing while swimming with the stingrays. They gently get you to leave. Also, if you are getting pictures, those lines are also much longer the later in the day.

I would say the shower facilities are in the middle. The lines were long at the end of the day and people were rushing a bit to shower and get out of the way for the next person. For a low maintenance guy that just needs to shower and get dressed, they are fine. But don't make the dinner reservations close to park closing time because it can take a little while for everyone to get an available shower stall. The showers do have shampoo and body wash dispensers, so no need to bring your own unless you want to. They have adequate counter and mirror space, but some may find it a little chaotic to apply makeup carefully.

We had a cabana as well, and our attendant told us not to worry about getting out at closing time. She told us it's not a problem to finally head to the shower when they close down the swimming areas. That is what we did and we didn't leave the park until about 6:45 and we were among the very last 2 or 3 cars in the parking lot.

I would also consider where you are planning your dinner reservations for and at what time. You have to remember that DC is all inclusive with food and drink being available all day. Last time we were there we could barely manage a snack 3 or 4 hours after we left. We didn't go that over the top in DC but like most late afternoon we couldn't resist the pretzel!
