Just a quick update now we're back in the UK :guilty:
I booked our holiday through Virgin but chose not to pay for their car insurance.
Taking the advice of several DIS members I bought annual car insurance through insurance4carhire.
It cost £103 for the year and then about £60 in taxes etc at the airport - saving me about £200! There were no problems at all when I collected my car. I just showed them the certificate (which they never even glanced at!) and went on my merry way.
They did take a $1500 credit card imprint but that was that.
Have fun
:cheer2:

Forgot to say actually that the £60 included a full tank of petrol so I could return it empty. At Dollar's inflated fuel prices I guess you could save even more by refusing this option. I just wanted to get to the hotel and not worry about filling up on the way ;-)

Thanks for the update Alison, I'm glad it went well! And think of the money you saved :)
