Hi all,

My husband and I will be in Disney during the Inaugral Wine & Dine Half Marathon. I really want to do this, however I am out of shape. It is 198 days away. I am thinking that I have some time to train. You have maintain a pace of 16 min KM. For anyone that does marathons (or people in the know), is it possible to walk a 1 KM in 16 minutes? How long do you need to train for a half marathon? Any other Canadians going to be running this?

Good question:thumbsup2 I would also be interested to know. My DH has done a half marathon. But I have never been a runner.

Just back from the Princess Half Marathon.. DW ran and I watched. It was AMAZING to see how many people finished with a fast walk. I only saw some of the larger "Pooh sized" people at the very end where the vans were picking up the ones who couldn't keep the pace.

I talked to many non-runners who ran for a few minutes and walked for a few and still were done well under the time.

With ~200 days it's easy to get into half marathon shape!

One thing to keep in mind is the pace is a 16 minute mile, not km. however, I have faith, if you set your mind to it, you can do it! I've worked these races, and just 2 weeks ago was working water stop 7 when a good friend walked right on by during the princess half and she did fine! She's 49 and it was her first ever doing anything like it! Go for it and Good luck! You wont regret doing it!

I would love to be running this but my newborn will only be 6 weeks by than so I imagine that would be a little harsh. I plan on doing the family 5 km though. You have a lot of time to get ready. If you have a running clinic that you could join they start training you in intervals. Run walk run walk steadily increasing your time running and cutting your time walking. You can do this on your own too. The most important thing is don't get discouraged, some days the first ten minutes feels like torture but once the endorphins kick in it's all good:thumbsup2.

YES ... it can be done! I've completed two 1/2 marathons (one in Disney ) and while it does take training, maintaining a 16 min mile is very do-able. Even if you are not in the best of shape right now, you definitely have enough time to train.

You can use training plans that are 13 weeks long for example. Basically they have you out walking 5 days a week, but usually only ONE day per week would be considered your "longer" walk. For example, you might do a 30-40 min walk 4 of the days, and the longer one would increase as you progress thru the program.

The first time I tried brisk walking for 5 miles, it was during a freezing rain storm, and we were dressed in winter coats and boots! Took us an hour and a half. A few short months later, I could do 5 miles in an hour and 15 minutes, and that was a nice "shorter" walk! LOL

John Bingham and Hal Higdon both have great training plans. :goodvibes

It can! I ran most of it (only started running in August) and completed the Princess 1/2... I walked the last 3 miles with bits of running mixed in.

And yes, you can walk the whole thing if you train for it. Another thing to consider is that they start the 16 min mile pace clock when the last wave starts, for the princess it was nearly 30 min after the first group left.

Also, is this the race you can split with someone, like your DH? Might be fun if he is interested. Good luck!
