What exactly is family burn camp? When you mentioned it a month or so ago, I my mind naturally went to some kind of fitness camp (you know...feel the burn!

OF COURSE my head would go there!). But since you mentioned Baylor, I guess now it has something to do with his injuries?
Hello E - my name is Dawn. I have lost the least weight of everyone who is among the originals I believe - and that is because I suck at commitment to myself and excersize as well as food choices. You and your skinny little tukkus would associate the word burn with your excersize crazed mind

- I would link the word burn to a pizza not taken out of the oven on time!
But all kidding asside - yes the Family Brn Camp is put on here in the state by the burn unit so kids and families can get some counseling, word choices and the most important part is for kids/adults to have a place to go without being stared at. Not to be different. It is something that they had talked to us about last fall when he was hurt and really emphasized the healing impact that it has for everyone involved.
The rehab people, docs and social workers put it together - it is held at a YMCA family camp in Northern MN. I am hoping it helps all of us.
For example last week at BB - a couple of kids stared at Baylor's leg when he was putting sun screen on it - (Baylor tries to cover it with a towel when exposed and do things hidden if at all possible but to put the compression stocking back on it needs to be out in the open. The boys said - "gross - what happened to his leg? It looks like rubber" to each other - they were right behind us - about 16-17 yrs old. Just a dumb thing to say and loud enough for everyone in our group to hear.
Baylor has tears welling. face beet red and he is hurt, embarrassed etc.
Treyner - was ready to throttle them.
He gets stares all the time because he is in a swim suit with a long sock on -(he has to wear it over the compression sock to prevent sunburn damage to the new skin) People pointed and smirked all day in lines saying - looks like you forgot to take a sock off.
I think because he does not have burns elsewhere that they see - it is thought of as no big deal by many people to point out his sock.
I truthfully worry how bad it will be next year once the sock comes off and his scars are not protected from sight. The good news is here - we are in jeans weather most of the year.
So I hope this camp helps some anger I carry and I know the kids do over Baylor and peoples reaction - I need to learn how to let it slide easier because after the 25th time in 6 hours that someone points out your kid does not match everyone else - I want to start swinging.
I know that people with kids who have mental or physical dissabilities have always gone through this - it is not a new issue in the world - it is just a new learning process for me and the kids and for Baylor. At 13 years old, you just want to be the same as everyone and boys start clamming up and not talking at that age to begin with - so it will be good to have him around a safe place and people to talk with.
He then is going to a burn camp just for kids in August. It has kids from all over the US, Canada and England. It will be in Estes Park,Colorado and is put on by all the burn centers in the US and teh Colroado fire fighters. Kids with easier issues like Baylor help kids who have lost limbs etc., climb, horseback ride and just hang out. He is really excited about that.
K- I am really gone for the rest of the day - did not mean to write that much but it is a raw subject right now and more emotional than I sometimes want to admit.
