In Search of My Body - Not the One I Ate... Vol. 6: Goddesses just want to have fun

Dawn, I am just doing a quick pop in to possibly answer some of your questions/points that you posed.

Shelby is playing on a USA field hockey travel team called the Mid Maine Majestix. You can search their name and the site will tell you a little more about them. They travel mostly in New England to college sponsored tourneys and to California and WDW for Festivals. Entry into the festivals is by invitation first and then open to other teams who wish to compete until the slots are full. So being asked is HUGE. The team is head coached by the field hockey coach from Colby College which will probably ring a dinger with Erika and maybe Steph but not many others of you. Shelby is also a goalie and goalies are HUGE in field hockey. If you are good, they want you, point blank.

The USA Field Hockey association is the place where you get chosen for the national team, read future Olympians here. Scary, exciting, all wrapped up in one little bundle in goalie pads...

So the team does not offer scholarships, per se, but they get you out and seen by the college coaches and if they take notice, you go from there. We play at division 1 colleges exclusively like Harvard, BU, UNH etcetera. Shelby is 14 and playing on the U16 and U19 teams mostly. I don't feel pressure to attend now but this too will come in the next few years. I hate the fact that I need to "market" my daughter but that is really what it boils down to. My vacation money will be spent attending tournaments for the next 4 years, at least.

I hope that answered or addressed the questions/points that you had. And yes, I agree that this thread is like crack but only in a good way...

This is a quick stop for me. I am off to do the final prep work for tonight's panel discussion. I will be soooo happy when this is over. Way too much work for one night. Hopefully, it will be worth it.

Paula - glad your moms procedure went well. Please tell me about this panel discussion. If you already explained, I'm sorry. I'm in a fog.

K - you guys are like crack to an addict.

That is hilarious!!! :rotfl:

So, I've been reading along, just haven't had much to contribute. Same stuff, different day.

The cruise report sounds awesome. I am definitely ready for a vacation now.

My folks are visiting from California this week -- I love my mother dearly but she can press those buttons......so while Kelly tries not to kill the inlaws, I'll be attempting to not duct tape mom's mouth shut. ;)

Hope you all are having a good Tuesday!

Dawn! Loved the pics. Great job Treynor on the scholarship! When does he graduate?
Treyner graduates on June 5th. Party. Sunday June 14th. I went to Target to just order 4x8 photo cards for his invites - they told me there is a better selection on ShutterFly and then can be printed and picked up at Target. Super easy blah blah blah. Yeah well no joke - I like the way they turned out (4 pic collage) but between my computer not wanting it to load, finding out that there is a shutterfly/target site not just shutterfly I needed to do it on etc., (after it was finally okay enough for me) It was a 6 hour procedure. Whole day shot but a big check mark on my to do list!
I forgot to tell you guys about the Dance Recital. It's a CIRCUS!
If it is in a auditorium can they have assigned seats?

When my kids danced, you waited in line on a Sunday to turn in your ticket requests. There was 4 dances (sat and sun matinee and evening) most kids only danced in shows 1&3 or 2&4. Upper level kids all 4 since they were the highlight of her studio.

You could pick one dance you wanted lower level tickets for (up to 6) then the rest of the tickets for other guests or other nights were awarded as they fit around. But turning in your ticket request was a numbered deal and obviously #1-40 pretty much got what they wanted for tickets for what night. If you were not able to come, then you better find a neighbor or drunk hobo who would not steal your money because you needed to be in line. Only 1 ticket order form request per person. I have never camped out for Day after Thanksgiving sale stuff or tickets for any concert. But my hind end was always there early. Usually 6 hours or so before they started collecting.

Anyway, this was a controlled zoo then and you better have aticket for the seat you were in cause you would be bounced if not. I learned there was always single seats down below and never cared if I set seperate after my preffered recital.

Saturday night. Same scenario. Arrive early. Blah blah blah. I begin the night trying to tape a friend from the early part of the show, that I missed Friday. Press the button to record. The camera flashes "out of tape". Are you kidding me!!!! I can't even believe it.
I think I told this once before. We were in Sea World when the kids were under 7. Waite in line and coorelated the whole day to feed the dolphins. I am holding Carsyn and Baylor up with sardine juice dripping all over me, Treyner is on his own and all Chad had to do was tape the kids feeding the darn dolphins. This adjusting and rehoisting of toddlers ensued for a good 4 minutes. After the last fish was fed...

All of a sudden I hear, "D@mmit." "Is this thing taping or what?"

The answer was no but the glory day portion was that he did hit record at that part, so you hear Chad on the tape saying that, and then see my reaction.

Swear I was possessed by belzebub hisself. My head swung 180 degrees and a voice like the exorcist spewed out, "What do you mean is this taping?"

I then put the kids down, and with my fish smelling hands, grab the camcorder and look at it. Of course I am holding it to my b00b to look down into the lens, so you see them coming at you, then backing away, me having a small expletive moment, then coming back at you again etc...

It is funny now and I will not tape over it for anything. I think that is when I also caught onto the fact that I may be a little to OCD in trip planning.

That was the trip Animal Kingdom had just oppened and we got to the car ticketing que before the CM was even there to take our money or let us into the lot. Again, I read it may be packed and arrive early. :confused3

Shelby is also a goalie and goalies are HUGE in field hockey. If you are good, they want you, point blank.
As a goalie mom I get it and it is exactly like Treyner's team the past few years. Soccer has a Olymic Development Team as well. A lot of Treyner's team mates have been on it but Treyner never took soccer as his mainstay till last year so you are way ahead of us.

So the team does not offer scholarships, per se, but they get you out and seen by the college coaches and if they take notice, you go from there. We play at division 1 colleges exclusively like Harvard, BU, UNH etcetera. Shelby is 14 and playing on the U16 and U19 teams mostly. It is the crux of it all isn't it? Go broke for these upper level teams in order to hope your kid doesn't go broke in college.
I hope that answered or addressed the questions/points that you had. And yes, I agree that this thread is like crack but only in a good way...
Thanks for your explanantion! Does she have any tape of her in goal? That is one thing I would say, start taping now and whole field shots not just them coming at her in the end. Colleges want to see the set up of the play anfd how she reacts. Also, look into camps tat the colleges she narrows her sites on might offer. Them seeing her for a full week is better tha any 1 game can show or a highlight film. Plus she can get a feel of the coaching, campus better as well.

I know it is a year or so in the future for that but those are the things I wished I would have known ahead of time.

So, I've been reading along, just haven't had much to contribute. Same stuff, different day.

Yeah, totally get that! I'm in and out of life lately. I'm moving hour by hour.

G'luck with that. Are you from Cali?

Gosh Dawn - your seat/ticket process sounds horrific!

I don't even ask B to tape. I tape and shoot with the camera at the same time. Funny story.

Intersting about shutterfly. We got a carded announcement this year. Must be the new "thing".

Gosh Dawn - your seat/ticket process sounds horrific!
The waiting in line for turning in the tickets was the onlybad part. The rest actually meant you were not crazed for seats the day of the shows.

It was just more informal and way less expensive than the traditional school insignia cards and formal stuff. No one can go to his graduation anyway so this was a great option. Plus I had room to write what he would be doing next year incase people did not come and wanted to know.

But what IS he doing next year, Dawn? Sounds like that is still up in the air? :confused3

Loved the pics. I can see why you love the one of him kissing you!

Paula--glad mom is ok! Good luck tonight and awesome job on the loss!

Lyz! OMG, I provide the most detailed TR EVER and you still have questions! Ok, ok, I'll get to them when I can.

Lots going on, mostly good stuff. Shopping for the camp--fun stuff! Baseball--eh, fun enough I guess. I will be glad when the season is over only because the time demand is brutal. Summer session started yesterday as well, so just lots of stuff to do.

LisaPR--I was a field hockey goalie as well, and yes, that is a breed that is in demand. I started Varsity my freshman year of college. I was thinking of you and Shelby the other night, though not for field hockey but for softball.

Kelly was playing and they put her in as catcher! I so wish I had my camera. I will make sure to have it for next game. She is SUPER tiny. Just this little bit of a thing. And there she was, with all the gear on, crouched behind home with one arm behind her back and her other hand had her mit up. SO cute! The ump was DYING. She is so tiny and was SO serious and was in this professional catcher pose. It was a riot.

Yep, grew up in L.A., so I'm a big Disneyland fan.

My daughter is playing catcher this year for the first time, too. She absolutely loves it.

I get such a kick out of going to the games and chatting with the other parents -- except for the whackadoo ones who forget that we're playing for fun. :sad2: Our girls are playing very well this year -- it's such an improvement from last year. If they do well (meaning play their best) in the end of year tournament, we are taking them all to a professional women's softball game as a reward.

LisaZ, please remind me how old your kids are again? Sorry for forgetting!

E - as of now the plan is Fort Lewis. If anything changes we will know after June 15th when the final financial aid stuff can be sorted.

I think he needs that year of training under his belt to really test his worth and then re-evaluate after his Freshman year.

Option #1 - good scholarship and stay in Fort Lewis
Option #2 - Head to Europe with a years of fitness and agility under his belt at a highly competitive level
Option #3 - go to a different school for a full ride (NAIA or maybe different school within the NCAA)

They will not even determine if they will redshirt him or not next year. Will not until after camp from what I understand.

I may be looking to sell my organs to fund next year.
Kidney -no go
eyes - blind as a bat 20/2500
gallbladder - don't have one

Okay so after much consideration - I have moved on to selling my sisters organs. :lmao:

What am I thinking...Where is Chad?:rotfl2:

Just kidding. How bout blood? :rotfl:

We will figure it out. Praying every day.

Thanks for saying you liked the pic of Treyner and I. I will cherish that pic forever. Good times.

Answering Lyz’s questions. Because, quite frankly, she scares me when she gets like this!

1. Yes, there were LOTS and LOTS of vegetarian options! It was great having so much to choose from. It was all excellent. I was a bit worried about Cookies BBQ as well, but again, it was fine.

2. My conversation with Pete and Walter was on the first night, on deck 9—Pete was sitting at one of the tables by the adult pool having a smoke. It was late, about 11. Dark and the boat was moving pretty fast, so there was a lovely breeze. Just a perfect tropical night. We talked for maybe 40 minutes just the 3 of us.

3. No, our bill for drinks wasn’t too bad. I knew a few tips that really helped. We brought out own wine on board. You are welcome to bring your own bottle with you to dinner. So that saves a fortune right there. (Tip for future cruisers: Bring your own corkscrew with you on board. Uncork your wine in your stateroom, then just gently recork the bottle to take with you to the dining room. If you have your server uncork the wine for you at the table, there is a $12 cork charge. We knew this beforehand, fortunately.) We also brought other alcohol on board with us. Some beer, rum, and of course, tequila. We keep all of this in our Owner’s Locker, so we had it in Orlando and just brought it all. When we ordered room service in the evenings, we drank our own alcohol. We only paid for drinks when we were up on deck and on Castaway Cay.

Another tip for future cruisers which we figured out early on: get the drink of the day! Each day there is a drink of the day—it is always something fruity and rum-based (Mai Tai, Bahama Mama, Stingray, etc.) Regular cocktails on board are going to run $7- $10 per drink. The drink of the day was only $3.50. So this ended up being pretty cheap. Plus there were free drinks at some of the Podcast events, so really, alcohol was not too big of an expense.

Note for beer drinkers: The cheapest way to do beer on the cruise is to buy the souvenier mug (glass and nice looking, for $12.95), then all of your beer refills are only $4 for 22 ounces. We opted NOT to do this though, as they only had Annhuiser-Busch products. Yuck.

4. Yes, the photographers were everywhere, which I was happy about. I knew that really the only souvenier I would want would be some really great photos. It is sort of how it was when you went in 2005, but some changes. They print out all of the pics and have them on nice display racks outside of Animators’ Palette. They are clearly labeled so you can find yours easily (“Embarkation between 2-4”; “Parrot Cay dinner on Monday,” etc. So as long as you know when you were where, you can find your photos easily). You throw the ones you don’t want into a specially labeled bin and pay for the ones you do want. BUT, they also have an easier way now, too. There are these photo kiosks. You swipe your key to the world card, and all of the photos of your family pop up on the screen. And then you can order that way or delete. I hope they start doing it that way only. It was horrifying to see the waste. ALL of those pictures printed out and only a fraction actually purchased. As for buying the pics, I went up with the few that I wanted and they said, “Oh just takes these, too! We’re just going to throw them away anyhow…” so that was as nice bonus.

5. No, we didn’t bring the kids with us to Nassau. Left them in the kids’ club. I was a bit nervous about this—I mean, what would happen if they needed us and we were off wandering the island? The pagers don’t work there. But I knew we wouldn’t be there long.

Ok, that is the just the first HALF of Lyz’s questions! Sheesh!

Part 2 of Lyz’s Questions:

6. So what makes you think that I didn’t make the Fish Extender myself? Hmmm??? I mean, I am the first to admit that I am so NOT crafty, but the one thing I CAN do is sew. But of course, you are right. I sure as heck didn’t have time to make one myself. There is a woman here on the DIS, Tiffany (gradysmom) who has made tons of them and has a thread here on the boards with lots of photos. I PMd her and asked her if she would send me some of her measurements and instructions, etc. so that I could make my own. She then told me that she sells them (made to order) on eBay. And the price—get this--$20!! Um, SOLD! Just running out to the craft/fabric store to get all of the materials would be worth the $20, let alone the time spent having to make it.

Anyway, once I decided to have her make it, I gave her the specs, so yes, I designed it but she made it. I know it is hard to see all of the pockets (except the top where I had a close-up). The first pocket had a Mickey and Minnie head with Jeff and Erika under each, respectively. The next one down was a Mickey head with a pirate bandana with Riley under it, then a Mickey head with a pink princess crown for Cammie, and another one with a purple princess crown for Kelly. I was really happy with how it turned out. In fact, it is now hanging in our mudroom and I am using it for a mail holder (or something similar).

7. As for what we contributed to the whole exchange…I was totally uninspired. So I gave out candy (I know! Boring!) and lobster magnets to represent Maine. There were lots and lots of us who did magnets (just look at the pic of the door…and there were many more after that).

8. The bathing suit was fine, though it didn’t see much time. The sun was SO strong that I kept my rash guard on almost the entire time. Due to life-guarding in my teens, as well as years and years of being on swim team, and using BABY OIL to tan with, I am skin cancer waiting to happen. I have to be really careful, particularly of my upper chest and shoulders. So I stayed covered for most of the time. It was still ok. There were lots of people in rash guards for the same reason. And it just made it look like I was in running gear…like always!

9. Yes, the kids loved the warm ocean water! The warmest the ocean ever gets here is maybe 65*. Maybe. This water was 75-80. Heaven. It was 90* out, so even 75* water was warm enough to be comfortable yet still felt cool and refreshing. There was ZERO surf at all, though, so that was kind of a bummer. Seriously, it was like a lake. Just still. The kids were really hoping to body surf, etc. Of course, this made it super safe so I didn’t feel like I had to watch them like a hawk.

10. Mickey bars…yes, the kids had their share. Not as many as Bob, though! That is crazy! They each had one for dessert most nights (or lunches, since we had sit-down lunches as well). Sometimes they opted for something else from the menu, but I am pretty sure they each had one Mickey bar per day.

Ok, that officially answers all of your questions. Happy now?!?!?!

Alcohol - Erika, this is Disney's specific policy? Interesting. I've been on cruises before where you could bring wine but not hard alcohol in. And usually they store your wine for you. But I guess if you want it in your room, that's different! ;) When we cruised with oenophiles, they stored it and paid a flat fee for corking. And the sommelier even brought better bottles for us - like, swapped out one of theirs for a better vintage as a treat. Very nice service! (Celebrity)

Of course, we have snuck it in. Bad us.

Room service - NCL does this, too, maybe more lines now. (Celebrity and RC were both good, but I don't remember the room service.) So what did your order every night? Tell me more.

How was the kids club?

Quick drive by because I sent a spreadsheet home to work on, lol. Bad I know! I'm ready for my lashings with a wet noodle.

Lyz ~ as always, thanks for asking the questions that I am dying to know.

E ~ Loving your TR! The tips, oh my! Had no clue that booze could be brought on the boat. Wow!

Lyz - good God! The mother of all technical difficulties! Glad you got it figured out eventually.

Dawn - love the pic's. And yes - I do owe San Antonio pics myself. I'd better get on that...

Congrats to Treyner on the scholarship. And graduation? Yikes that's approaching quickly. Ours isn't until June 25th.

LisaPR - Colby College. Yep I know of it too!

Such a busy day today.

I had an incredibly brutal beating with Erin this morning. :scared: She took some insane Boot Camp class over the weekend - and I think it gave her more motivation to push us to our limits  I asked the girls at the front desk to put arsenic in her coffee....:rolleyes1

Got my haircut :yay:

Bought plants :flower3:

Planted my garden (mostly)

...and filed a claim with my car insurance  Seth's car got hit by a foul ball during a softball game today and the windshield broke :headache: The girl next door (she plays on the team) texted him a picture - the boys were at a track meet an hour away. Thankfully we have full-glass coverage - so it shouldn't cost us anything to fix it.

And Paula - forgot to say earlier that I'm glad all went well with Mom. And you lost weight :yay: Nice job! I'm totally the steady-eddy these days. I'm ok with that though. for now ;)

Hi everyone...

I survived the panel discussion - yeah!!!! Lyz - I belong to the local chapter of the National Women in Construction organization (NAWIC) and tonight was our big membership drive meeting where we have a speaker come in, invite the world and hope to snare some more people to join. This year, I was chair of the event and in addition to planning the whole thing, got roped into moderating the panel discusion titled "Leading the Way - Women Building Strong Communities". The whole thing came together at the last minute and went off very well (especially since I had only met two of the four panelists before). I think everyone was pleased, but we won't know that until the feedback comes in.

I am exhausted and will be calling it a night soon. I have to go back to work tomorrow :confused3. Oh well. I got to play hooky with mom today so I shouldn't complain.

I am reading everyone's posts, but am claiming temporary bankruptcy until tomorrow when I can properly respond.

G'Night...
