In Search of my Body...Not The One I Ate.. #4 "Inspiring Others... 1 Tiara at a Time"

Morning! Today is Challenge Day! :cool1:

I am actually EXCITED. I am so ready to get these pounds off. Like Lisa/PR and Kelly, I have packed on extra these past few months, so those have to come off first. I am *hoping* that they will come off quickly since they went on quickly. I haven't signed the adoption papers on these fat cells yet and I don't plan to!

Paula--yes, muscle weighs more than fat, but I don't think your slight gain would be due to that at this stage of the game. A couple of things are likely at work here...(1) sure, it could be TOM. Only way to know that is wait it out and see if you go back down after he leaves; (2) When you are working out hard, you need to drink more water. Really concentrate on your water intake and flush your system as best you can; (3) it could also be the lactic acid build up in your muscles (which is what is causing the pain right now as well). Again, that will subside on its own but you can help it out. The tennis ball trick that Lisa mentioned is great for spot massaging. If you have a larger muscle that is really sore (quads or glutes, for example), I use the same principle as the tennis ball, but with a large tube (maybe 2' - 3' long) of PVC pipe and sort of roll on that. (FYI runners...this is FABULOUS to relieve IT band pain.)

So if your quads hurt, get on your belly, and put the pipe under your quad and sort of push up and roll the pipe up and down the length of your quad. And since the pipe is under you, your body weight is all the pressure you need for it to massage that muscle and break up and lactic acid build-up.

Since you are a construction goddess, I thought you might like the idea of using PVC as a work-out tool! :goodvibes Yes, there is a specific size of PVC but I don't know what it is off-hand, so I will look it up and get back to you on that.

Lisa/PR--You CAN do this! I know you can! You have been such an incredible inspiration to me this past year. Really. You lurk on this thread, but I have been lurker on YOURS. And I know how incredible you are, how dedicated, and how much you help everyone around you. We are happy to lift you now, if that is what you need. But I am super confident that you are going to kick this challenge's a$$!

Spark is good. There are several of us on Spark and Kat LOVES it. I have never been super active there, but that is because I hate to track! :rotfl2: I know I have to, though, so I am thinking about what is the best way to track for me. Online through Spark or WW? Journal? Not sure. But I know I have to do it. Anyone who has thoughts, let me know.

Oh! And there is a DisBoards Team on Spark...so come join us! Cam tends to lead a lot of the challenges, etc. She is great, as I am sure you know.

Erika's TIP o' the DAY: Before you do anything else in the morning (ok, you can go to the bathroom and brush your teeth), but really, first thing in the morning drink 20 ounces of water. Yes, 20. Or 24 if you have 12-oz glasses like me. (1) this will give you a great head-start on your water; (2) it stimulates and wakes up your metabolism; (3) it is filling, so you will eat a smaller portion at breakfast.

Then, have at least 12 ozs. BEFORE lunch and BEFORE dinner (same reasons). That alone knocks 40-48 ounces out. Then, drink water with your meals and during your work-outs and you will be at or over 64 easily.

Love you guys---let's GO!

"Tip o' the day" - you energizer bunny! I'll go drink that freaking water. I don't have a clue what size my glasses are.

Okay, I read back through and I remembered what I wanted to comment on. Yes, I have a cleaning lady. She is beyond wonderful. She does do the laundry while she is here. She even folds and puts away David and Shelby's clothes. She cleans the inside of my fridge and freezer. Spring cleaning is taking everything out of my cabinets and washing the things I don't use often, cleaning the cabinets and putting things back. She does it all and no, I am not giving her up for the world. I would give up coloring my hair or something else silly before I would give her up. She is so much help to me I cannot even say it. It is one of the few things that Mike will splurge on for me. No jewelry, no extras just the cleaning lady and that, my friends, is more than enough!!

Erika, flattered, really. I try to stay upbeat and help as much as I can. I truly loved being the captain of the Super Goofs and if the challenge does not continue, I will miss them greatly. Hopefully, we can run Beach to Beacon together this year. If not, pick a race and I will be there. Just a little heads up though because I work on Sunday and I have to get the time off.

Following up on the weight gain with exercise question. I will try and be brief. All the things Erika said are true. The other factor is that you are shocking your body. It will respond in one of two ways. Hoard every calorie and drop of water that comes into your system or immediately flush fat cells out. With the TOM looming, Paula, your body is doing the first part. Water, water, water is the key here. Flush out your system, the lactic acid from your muscles and the fat cells too. Another factor is that lactic acid holds water in your muscles. You have lots in there and you need to get rid of it. Muscle does weigh more than fat and the plateau that everyone hits is this point, where your body figures out what you are doing and balances itself out. Eventually, the lean muscle mass that you have built up takes over and lean muscle burns fuel more efficiently so you get that loss again.

The key to weight loss is diet and exercise. You cannot (as I am doing right now) eat the calories that you are exercising off. You have to maintain a calorie deficit where you eat the required calories in a day (for me 1200-1500) and then exercise to bring yourself into a deficit state. Not a hunger state, a deficit state. Make good choices with the food, heavy on the fiber and protein and you will stay full and fueled.

The water suggestion is also terrific for weight loss. The fuller you are, the better off you are eating. Bariatric surgeons make you go through nutrition counseling pre-surgery and some of the things they teach you is to eat your protein first, then your veggies/fiber and then your carbs. They also want you to drink before your meal, not with your meal. Take 20 minutes minimum during your meals too making sure to chew thoroughly. The little things you do matter the most!!

There I think I have said enough for right now. Hmm, maybe I should work.....:rolleyes1

Erika and Lisa/PR - THANK YOU!!!!

I love the fact that I have resident experts on speed dial to answer these questions for me. I feel so much more confident about tackling this goal with this board here to back me up.

All of the advice is good and I will start pumping more water into my system starting now. I'll try the tennis ball and the PVC pipe trick to get things moving and push past the pain. I have had a few conversations with both my trainer (who is also a certified nutritionist) and my JC consultant about how to meld the two plans together. I honestly think that once I hit the 50 pounds lost mark, I am going to start weening myself off of JC food and onto real food. I am getting a bit board with the JC program and since there have not been any significant losses in the last 8 months, my body may have adjusted and gotten used to it so the program may have run its course. It may be time to start counting calories and such. We'll see though. One major change at a time right. My membership with JC is paid through October so I'll likely use that as my target end date, so if I can lose the ten pounds to get me to fifty with the next few months, that will give me 6 - 8 months to work the transition program where you lose the second half of your weight while tranistioning off their food.

OK - have to prep for a meeting... talk to you all later, but I'll leave you with this...

Its a new year, a new day and a new dawn... it is time to recommit to ourselves and our goals... this is the time ladies (and Dan). We can do this!!!!!

Paula

Nancy, I really adored those pictures. The fruit. My word. The shirt I love, it's something my mom would buy me in double and we'd have to take pictures wearing them.

Good advice all around. Listen. Not so good stuff here. I'm going to read and cheer you on and do my own thing, but that's why I'm quiet, okay? Newbies, returning friends, I really do love you. I do, I swear. But I'm not engaged and it's all my own stuff in my life. Another small hit today and I'm sorry that it takes away from the magic here.

So, I'm here, in the corner - see me? :thumbsup2

For all of you laughing about the pear...well I am too! Last night I got into bed giggling...then first thing this morning when I walked downstairs, there is this giant PEAR looking at me. Laughed right out loud again. It's currently in the middle of my dining room table...sitting there in all it's glory - mocking me.:rotfl2: The entertainment value that it has given me thus far is more than I could have expected.

Funny thing is, she told us that she wanted to get PRACTICAL gifts this year....so I asked for a new crock pot. So much for THAT.

Nancy, I am team captain of the Super Goofs and IF the challenge starts again, you are more than welcome to join up with us. I am very unsure if it will be a go again as the originators of the WISH team were not happy with the original concept and are still voicing their dislike of it. Who knows but, if it is a go again, anyone here is welcome to request a spot on the Goofs. We ended up with a mere 11 people on the team including myself after starting with around 20. Sad.

Thanks Lisa- I'll pop back over there and check it out again. :goodvibes

I haven't signed the adoption papers on these fat cells yet and I don't plan to!

Yep. The Re-po man is on his way to my house as we speak. These pounds are OUTTA here

umm-hmmmm. And it will also make me either a) wet my pants while I am working out, b) make me STOP my workout a dozen times to pee in hopes that I DON'T wet my pants or c) all of the above. :scared1:

Paula - you got some great advice from our resident guru's :worship: But one thing that I will add is...if you continue to have significant pain (and I do mean *muscle awareness* pain, not injury pain) after your workouts, you may want to discuss this with your trainer. While the muscle needs to break down so that it can build back stronger, that doesn't mean you always have to feel incapcitated afterwards in order for your workout to be effective. A couple days of "discomfort" perhaps...a week before you are fully recovered? Not necessary.

I got my challenge off to a great start today. I'm journalling (yeah, it's not even LUNCH time yet :rolleyes1 )...and I had a kick a$$ workout. Oh. and I weighed in. Not pretty. I wasn't kidding when I said I was "bulking up" for the weigh in!

I think that at the end of the day, I'll post my daily food intake totals (not the whole breakdown, unless I find I'm having real problems and need help analyzing and trouble shooting...) and my exercise totals...and then on Friday's I'll also weigh in and post that result as well.

Ack.

 Take care of you, 'k?

Liz - I just noticed your ticker. You are SO CLOSE that your little "progress gauge" is smack on top of your "goal". :thumbsup2 Awesome!

Ah, that's a fake out, my girlfriend. ;) I have baby goals, so 160 is my first goal, then down from there to lifetime weight. But looking at the same numbers made me crazy, so I just changed the ticker. :lmao:

Hey -two things! We need links on the first page to the last three threads...also, we need the cast in one post! Right? I feel very lost without that.

Touchstones, people. I need touchstones! :goodvibes

Nancy,

Thanks for the thoughts on my pain. I am feeling much better today, but it was day two after my workout that it was the worst. My trainer knows how I am feeling and explained that it was DOMS (delayed onset muscle something or other). I am going to give it a week and if it continues to like this we will have to adjust. All I can say is it is a good thing that I don't have to climb many ladders right now because I don't think I could. One of my previous projects had me climbing scaffolding ladders with 30 foot runs at a time. I so couldn't do that with the way I feel now... In a week, I should be better (I hope...).

I had a thought about your pear... My grandmother used to have this horribly awful ceramic object de Art of these african savages on an elephant that were attacking tigers that she received as a gift... It was so horrible and awful that you couldn't help but wonder WTH the artist was thinking let alone the purchaser. Not wanting to insult the gift giver, she proudly displayed it until she moved from her house into an apartment. When she moved, my uncle took possession of "the elephant" as it has affectionatly been named. It then went into storage only to come out many years later as the ultimate gag gift at my high school graduation party... I was laughing so hard when I opened the box that I started crying. It is now a family "heirloom" that is passed on to another family member at just the right time for just the right occaission. It comes out once ever five - ten years it seems and I just know that it will be an engagement / shower / wedding gift if I ever get married someday... No one ever wants to display it again, but we all fondly remember it and love it now... Perhaps your pear can be that in the future... Until then, it will certainly put a smile on your face as it greets you in the morning...

Off to finish more paperwork...

Paula

Just popping in to spread hugs and love. Tough day for some of us, exciting day for others...whichever end of the spectrum you are on, you need friends to share the joys and sorrows with. So, we're here. :grouphug:

Thanks for the ab workout, Lisa! That is one of my exercise goals this month! Abs....5x/week.

Hey all...I am posting this for Liz at her request.

Liz's mom (Sylvia) is a 4-time survivor of breast cancer. Many of us have been with Liz as she supported her mom through the last battle this time last year. Though she has been in remission for some time, the cancer is back yet again. Devastating news, to be sure.

The current plan is 4 months of chemo. Then go from there. They have faith that she will kick this bout as well, so that is good. But of course, prayers and support are needed all around.

Liz is reading the thread but will be quiet for a while in terms of posting. So, she's here with us, but needs to be supported and cheered on while she deals with other issues.

Love you, babe.

Very cool Erika!

I had something exciting happen after I stepped on the scale this morning. I don't normally watch the needle move up and down as I step off, but today was an exception. It didn't return back to zero. I moved to all around and still didn't get to zero. I have no clue how long it has been doing this, but I have been short-changing my weightloss by almost 4 pounds. Very, very exciting. But, me being me, I didn't believe it. When I went to rename a daily file at work today, I stepped on our scale there too. I really am 4 lbs lighter.

I have been doubting myself quite a bit lately ~ still can't tell a difference when I look in the mirror. So, this gave me a nice little ego boost. I so which I could get the big girl image that I have etched in my mind to take a vacation once in a while. The scale shows that I am doing something right ~ just wish my mind would come along for the ride too.

Edit: Oh my gosh, I am so glad my 300th post was here!

Yeah Amiee! :woohoo:

Hi all....need to read and catch up since last night...

Ended up going into the hospital last night about 4 am....started vomiting about 2am...and earlier found a mushy spot on the front top of my head where I smashed it (about 2 inches in from hairline)....turns out I have a concussion and ended up with blood pooling uinder the skin in an area about the size of a golf ball...I have never had such a melon ache...

Weird because headache is not the best term...it hurts on the top...where usually my headaches I feel deeper inside...probbaly not making any sense at all...

Kept trying to feel for a goose egg after I hit it...not looking for an indent...

Anyway...lots of exciting news here...need to pm you guys later...

Treyner just came in and said to say hi to the hot mamas of the board...

He must want something...suckup...:rotfl2:

Hope this year is a great one for all of us.:lovestruc

 Dawn.

AIMEE--Awesome! Love that!

The camp is not winterized, so no, we haven't been there. But we plan to winterize it this summer...that way, I can snowshoe up there next winter!

And Jeff is also depressed withthe post-holiday blues. Odd, since he is not a huge fan of the holidays. He used to HATE the holidays. But a few years ago he finally admitted that since I am so into it and make such a big deal out of it, it has made them fun for him. :goodvibes

Podcast details--ok, so you know about David Parfait, right? The new "roving reporter" who is working with the team (SO jealous!). Well, he is my buddy in a couple of ways. I helped him with work a while back (he is also a prof.) and we are teammates on the Warriros. So anyway, Pete asked him to cover marathon week-end, so he PMd me and asked if I would be part of the interview and race report, etc. I would be over-the-top excited, except that we are not totally sure we are even going to make it down there for marathon week-end just yet. Lots of reasons as to why we are up in the air, but I will go into detail later.

That's exciting Erika. :surfweb: . And that's nice with Jeff that your love for the holidays changed him. And cute that he admitted it.

ok. Y'all wanna laugh...at my expense of course....

I just took some pictures that I want to share with you.

I went to my husband and said "ok..ONE more time. I need a lesson in how to take the pictures off the camera".

He looked at me and said..."well good luck. That's the battery"

:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I am SUCH an idiot. So. He tells my son to take the pictures off for me....

I'll have pictures in a moment....I hope...

Okay. I'm not sure that we are twins anymore.

So, Erika. You got yourself a paring knife from your MIL, right? To a certain extent, at least we can all agree that it's useful.

My family always celebrates Christmas together on New Years Day. It's kind of nice, because it allows us to do whatever we want on Christmas Day. Yes, it prolongs the holiday season, which can be good or bad...but it's just what we do.

I knew we were in *trouble* before we started opening gifts today, when my mother proclaimed that this year, she bought "gifts of folly" :confused3 huh? Gifts of folly? What *exactly* did she mean by THAT?

Well...I was about to find out.

FIRST...she got me a t-shirt, which I think we can all agree, suits me. This one is a keeper. (yes, those are glittery little "bedazzler" type gems in the glasses...)

IMG_1833-1.jpg

BUT THEN. I don't know what she was thinking. She got all 4 "girls" (me, my sister and 2 SIL's)...."objects d'art" I got a pear. A GIANT pear. To put it in perspective...that's a 2 liter soda bottle next to it

IMG_1832-1.jpg

Of course, after he almost choked on his drink, hubby says "well. My wife *finally* has a PERFECT PAIR" :rotfl2:

It's big. Really big. I have NO IDEA what I'm going to do with this pear.

OY.

Everything else, thankfully, was wonderful.

And yes, Steph...my SIL let my niece drink. :headache: the IRONY of it all was they were discussing some incident where underage kids were drinking and now the parents have had charges filed against them. :confused3

Loved the pics.

Nancy, I really adored those pictures. The fruit. My word. The shirt I love, it's something my mom would buy me in double and we'd have to take pictures wearing them.

Enjoy Steph. Enjoy.

Paula - was going to chime in. But everyone pretty well covered it. If I'm on heavy intervals after rotating another workout schedule I have gained small amounts sometimes. If that happens I ignore it - really make sure I'm drinking my water and eating enough times - ie. keeping myself balanced with eating every three hours/nutrients in for that exact type of workout - and usually it takes care of itself.
