In Search of my Body...Not The One I ate...#3 "Crowning Goddesses As We Go"

You go!

Family first. You second. We'll be here when you come up for air.

Deb

I will respectfully disagree here... if you don't put yourself first, you can't take care of your family. However, I do agree that this thread comes way behind family. So E, glad you got some sleep.

And yes, we will definitely be here when you come up for air.

SO, I managed to take the RIGHT fork in the road, and get to the gym last night, even though I didn't leave her until after 7. 30 min on arc trainer, 75 crunches.

I have been considering finding a gym closer to home, but I just can't find a deal as good as the one I have. Mine is $10/month with no contract. It is about 10 min out of the way, but the only two I found in my path, one required $250 initiation fee (wth??) and the other looked cheesy even in the online photos, and their email contact didn't work.

I would do a home gym but DH would never allow me to take over a room like that, and anyhow that comfy couch is WAY too close to a home gym....

It's not an LA Fitness is it? We have a couple of those here and I was at the mall one day when they were recruiting, looking for new members. I couldn't believe how much the 'initiation fee' was. It totally blew me away.

They just opened a 24 hr Fitness about 10 min from my house but I'm afraid to join, tbh. The last time I went to a gym (with intentions of joining, but I wanted some info first) I was made to feel really bad about my weight (which wasn't as bad as it is now) by the person doing the tour for me. My sister (who was 17 at the time) was also with me and they yelled at her each time she stepped off the carpeted path through the gym. It made me never want to go into a gym, any gym, ever again.

No, I think it was a Gold's Gym.

I go to Planet Fitness. It is no-frills, has no classes or anything, but it is clean and people mostly leave you alone there. I just want to go in and do my thing and get out.

But, I just don't really care what people think. I put my fat a$$ into hole-y old college t-shirts (which are now like 15 yrs old) and men's $5 wal-mart gym shorts. And I would do the same in a meat-market gym. Screw 'em, they can look away if they don't like it. :)

I hear Golds Gym is basically the Nazi gym... their contracts are air tight and you can't even pay to get out of them from what I hear... Sucks too cuz they are close to us and 24 hours...

Hi Gang...

Work has been kicking my butt today so not much time to post... Thankfully, I am not eating my way through the stress (gotta love having snacks on hand that are good options...).

I am off to officially celebrate my birthday tonight with my family. I am going to splurge and have some cake (sponge cake with canoli filling.. yum...), but I have planned for it. Light lunch for me today (salad with some turkey) and I saved my extra starch options for my dinner and cake.... its not a birthday without birthday cake right...

So - my family has been bugging me for birthday gift ideas and it dawned on me that the things I want the most for myself are not things you can buy in a store. So here is my birthday wish for this new year in my life....

I want to be happy with my body and have my confidence levels match. I want to be healthy so that I can have a long life. I want to be able to finally be free of all of the shackles my weight has bound me in.

One last wish (if I am not being too greedy).... I wish the same for all of you!!!!

Talk to ya later,
Paula

I can understand your POV, but for a *this* circumstance, for a few days, kids first for me. I've been fortunate with Kaitlyn, but we've had other pretty sick kiddos in the immediate family.

As for the gym, holy cow! 10 bucks a month? The YMCA around here is way more than that. I agree about the comfy couch thing. I park my bike inside, right by the front door, so I don't forget to go and use it! Otherwise it would languish - out of sight out of mind, don'cha know!

Deb

YMCAs are always more expensive for a single enrollee than regular gyms, in my experience. I think it is because of all of the extra family programs that they offer.

Mine is particularly cheap, but that is likely because they don't offer classes or personal training sessions or any of that stuff. I think that you can "rent" a personal trainer for more $$, though.

No, I think it was a Gold's Gym.

I go to Planet Fitness. It is no-frills, has no classes or anything, but it is clean and people mostly leave you alone there. I just want to go in and do my thing and get out.

UGH.. The whole "gym" thing! I belong to a Gold's Gym here - by default. The gym I belonged to for 7 1/2 years was a small, family owned gym. It was, IMO, perfect. LOVED it. Unfortunately, it was not profitable. Most small gyms aren't...So sadly, and SUDDENLY they closed just before Christmas last year. :sad2: On the "up side" - a new Gold's was just opening and offered to "honor our contracts". Not so much a "buy out" but they would just let members move over with no enrollment fees, and you pay what your current contract says for the term of your agreement.

Well - we were amongst the very first members of the former gym - we paid $24.95 per month, no limit on our contract - meaning Golds cannot ever raise our rate. That includes unlimited classes as well as the usual cardio deck, weights - cardio cinema (yeah - a movie theatre with cardio machine in it :thumbsup2 ), sauna, etc, etc

Sounds great, doesn't it!?!

The problem is, it's in a "corporate" area - and the traffic is HORRID. It takes me 25 minutes to get there - and I simply cannot drive 12 miles to work out for 30 minutes before I have to leave in order to get to work on time during my "busy" season. So, this summer I went to the gym on average less than once a week. We biked mostly.

But wait - now there is a Planet Fitness opening up directly across the street from where my OLD gym was. And for $10 per month (or $99 per year pre-paid) I can be a member. It's only 8 miles from my house and takes about 12 mintues to get to. MUCH better. Except that they don't have classes. In the winter I like to spin, or do the "body combat" classes - just to keep the variety....

SO  - I've determined, that for the difference in distance, I'll be saving nearly $1.50 per DAY in gas alone going to Planet Fitness. So - this winter when my work schedule is much more flexible, I'm going to maintain TWO gym memberships. I'll go to Planet Fitness for my strength work outs (4-5 time per week, or $6-$7 savings in GAS) and once or twice a week I'll go to Gold's for classes and STILL be ahead in the $$$$ department!

Oh - and there is a "Y" right in the center of my town - 5 miles away. I refuse to go there. WAY to pricey for what I'd use - and it's always so crowded that often you can't even find a parking space, let alone a machine you want :scared: - and they have 30 minute time limits/sign ups, etc...not my style.

....so...do you get the feeling I've THOUGHT about this much?

I am off to officially celebrate my birthday tonight with my family. I am going to splurge and have some cake (sponge cake with canoli filling.. yum...), but I have planned for it. Light lunch for me today (salad with some turkey) and I saved my extra starch options for my dinner and cake.... its not a birthday without birthday cake right...

YUM! :yay: That sounds AMAZING! Enjoy it Paula!

We've got High School Open House tonight. Don't really feel like going - I'm soooo tired tonight! :sad2:

Nancy, I think you will like Planet Fitness. It isn't really for the novice as there is no instruction and the staff is pretty much a bunch of receptionists/janitors, but if you are used to working out it has a lot of equipment for a low price.

And great deal on the Gold's thing. I would love to find a good kickboxing or boxing class w/ bag work, but the only places I have found around here are independents who charge $10-20 per class or $100+ a month...

I am considering just buying a bag for home, I think D would let me keep it in the garage.

Ugh, it has been forever, i'm sorry! Open enrollment is hitting early this year! I work for a Benefits Consulting Firm and we are already getting inundated, usually the 15 hr workdays don't start til October.... i've been reading on lunch, but i can't post from work.....

Liz - OMG congrats, i'm so proud of you for finishing that race!!

Steph - so excited, you'll be in that house before you know it!

Everyone doing Light the Night - my company does this every year, I always walk in memory of Bruce's mother Peggy, she passed away when he was very young, at the age of 23 from leukemia :guilty:

E - my heart was breaking for you reading those posts, i hope your little angel is doing alright, i can't even imagine. You are in my thoughts and my prayers...

Haven't been doing much but working working working and sleeping. I haven't been eating horribly, but i haven't really been working out either, leaving the house at 5:45 and not getting back home to even eat dinner until 7 or 8, by the time i make dinner, feed the puppy and take her out, it's bedtime, rinse and repeat.... i'm EX-HAUS-TED  Pupster is doing great, the little porker is 30 lbs already, sHeesh!

I have to go dig myself out some dinner, but i promise i'm still around reading, and i hope to get back to posting more frequently, i hate this time of year at work. As a plus however, i've restarted tracking on Sparkpeople, so i'm hoping that helps.

I hope everyone is having a great evening!!!

I wish I had your gym choices! By my house there's a YMCA 2 miles away, a Lady of America (no good for a family gym...) about 8 miles away, and a 24-hour fitness about 20 minutes away. Some of the neighbors belong to the Y as well - they opened what some think to be a really good pool 2 summers ago and have child-care.

Now, a GODDESS crown for me! I weighed myself after work - and from my all-time high I've lost 10% of my body weight! Hoo-yeah! :woohoo:  :woohoo:

Yes, I had to shout that from the rafters. But I think it deserves it, yes?

Deb

Here I am at last!

Ok, first and foremost, thank you all so much for your thoughts and well wishes and prayers. Kelly is doing GREAT today and appears that all is well. We still haven't gotten the final word on her labs, but I think it is safe to say that she is still in remission and this was more of a hiccup than anything else.

Now, onward....

ps - lost 3.8 this week, so back to 162.4, ie 74.6 lbs lost. I'm calling it 75 and celebrating it.

Total. Freaking. Goddess! So happy for you! Crown--on your head.

To the powerful women in my life - Keep the faith!

Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning,

Satan shudders and says....

Oh sh!t...she's awake.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!

As long as nobody calls me a damn dirty ape. :rotfl:

Is it wrong that I suddenly had the hip-hop version of "Lady Marmalade" in my head? Soul sister go sister, better get that dough sister...:rotfl: I tend to think in music.

Hi and welcome! I just want to go on record that I decoded your name right from the start. Just wasn't here to show off my skills.

As for thinking in music...Liz and I do that, too. Though Liz more than me, cause she's a freak like that. :lmao:

Hey - can we get on aim...you all will not believe this morning...

Dawn, honey....darling....most of us, believe it or not...are not on AIM all day long....:lmao: ....we do try to get on at night...when we can...which is not always...or it is just a few of us...or whatever. We do not just wait around all day waiting for someone to AIM with...even though...that is what we would much rather be doing...as opposed to real life stuff...like work...and kids...and you know...exercise...(steph's kind and the real kind...) :lmao: :rotfl2:

I hear Golds Gym is basically the Nazi gym... their contracts are air tight and you can't even pay to get out of them from what I hear... Sucks too cuz they are close to us and 24 hours...

Each Gold's is actually an individually owned franchise, so you will find a ton of variety. I used to work there are a fitness trainer back in the day. This is actually where J and I met. :lovestruc

As for the gym debate-- We have a Planet Fitness as well (and the $10/month deal) but it is 20 minutes away so I don't go there. We also have a YMCA 20 minutes away but I would never consider going there because (1) it is too far and (2) it is super gross. I go to a small family-owned gym and I like it a lot. But it is NOT cheap. As Nancy said, it is really hard for the small gyms like that to make a profit.

As for the apple picking-- Yeah, we do that, too. The kids do it as a field trip (sorry, Nance!) and we go every year as a family. I think we will either go this Saturday or next. And we do the whole hayride thing, etc.

As for me-- I am doing fine. When Kel and I got home last night, the family kicked me out of the house for a run. I got in a nice 4-miler and felt really good. I will do a short 3-miler tomorrow as I rest up for the half marathon on Sunday. I am still wigging out about that, but not as bad as before.

I am working tonight, so I will pop in and out. Glad to be back! :goodvibes

Ok, throwing my 2 cents in here - because this is hot button with me. I do this with all respect in the world. I think as women we often put ourselves last. I think that is why some of us end up with weight or health issues. I have a close friend (besides my darling E) who had a critically ill child, and the last thing she thought of was food or sleep for herself. So when I see another friend in the same position, my instinct is to tell her to take care of herself, because so often we don't. I know in my own life I have found it much easier to deal with the family stuff when I am meeting my most basic needs. And maybe that is too simplistic for some - I mean, who doesn't eat or sleep? Well, honestly, people like me. We can push our basic human needs so far down we end up crashing, with no energy to take care of the ones who need us.

So that is why I agree with Kat - I mean, I'm not saying go out with your girlfriends, just make sure you do what you need to so you keep sane. Like eat and sleep and run, because when your kid needs you, you need to be ON and not half functioning. Again, maybe this is understood for others, but not for me. I'm not trying to throw down with you here, I just feel it's an important point. :goodvibes

And heck yeah, the Y is so not $10 here! Try $75 for just me!!! Crazy. I complained to the manager, wrote him an email, and he wrote me back thanking me and he forwarded it to the board. He thinks they out-price middle class families and don't serve the whole community. Of course prices still haven't come down, but at least the thought is out there.

We've got High School Open House tonight. Don't really feel like going - I'm soooo tired tonight! :sad2:

I wanted to get the rest of your post - how do you do that cool quotey thing again, Nancy? I LOVE the two gym memberships. So hardcore.

Deb, that is FANTASTIC!!! :worship: Goddess Crown!!!

so, I got my first birthday gifts today. Ready?

From my inlaws...food.

From my friend Teri who just lost 80lbs and has another 50lbs to go...a pilates gift certificate for a private session.

Is that Hi Lar Ious or what???? Nick was like, "You gave a woman on WW FOOD for her birthday?????" He totally called his parents on it. Now, to be fair, the cruise was our birthday.Christmas presents. And they gave me low fat stuff - Twizzlers ("You can cut them up and put them in individual serving bags!", my MIL chirped) and pretzels ("You always like these from Costco!"). But still. 75lbs down and you buy me ice cream cake and FOOD??? God love them.

And God Bless Teri, who totally gets it. :goodvibes

I wanted to get the rest of your post - how do you do that cool quotey thing again, Nancy? I LOVE the two gym memberships. So hardcore.

OMG, she is so hardcore. And now she is running again....ha! We have her now! Bike schmike! :lmao: :rotfl2:

I love that Nick called them out on that. Are they really that clueless? Or was this some sort of passive aggressive trip? I mean, really...who DOES that?

And on an even biatchier note...even if you weren't dealing with weight loss stuff, what kind of present is Twizzlers and pretzels????

Shout that one from the rafters baby.... 10% is huge.... You go girl!!!!!!
I'm so proud of you....

Totally!

I love that Nick called them out on that. Are they really that clueless? Or was this some sort of passive aggressive trip? I mean, really...who DOES that?

Oh, I KNOW. They gave Nick candy for is birthday. Wrapped and all. See, the cruise, which was my FIL's present to himself, is also our present for birthdays/Christmas. Which is FINE because it was an exceedinly generous gift, right? I certainly drank my birthday presents for the next 20 years on that cruise!

But they did get me something else. A statue of three nuns which plays a song - Dominica? I think - as this is like at least 50 years old and the music thingy is semi-broken. But it's quirky and antique and I LOVE silly nun stuff. Like, cool unique stuff. I'll post a picture. Basically, it's a weird gift, but it says, We know you and We love you. In their own special way.

Ok, so that is some redemption. I will stop hating them. For now.

Nuns and lobsters...k...getting a picture here. :lmao:

Shut UP!!! (Said in that totally teen-age way that means this is way cool :lmao: ) You are a total rock star and hell yes! Goddess crown for you!

Kelly is doing GREAT today and appears that all is well. We still haven't gotten the final word on her labs, but I think it is safe to say that she is still in remission and this was more of a hiccup than anything else.

I'm so glad to hear that Erika...

Each Gold's is actually an individually owned franchise, so you will find a ton of variety. I used to work there are a fitness trainer back in the day. This is actually where J and I met. :lovestruc

The guys that own the "corporate" one also own 4 others in the area - so I can actually go to any of them as a "member". This particular one happens to be the closest. It's a beautiful facility - and they are even expanding after the 1st of the year....it's just so darned FAR. :confused3

As for the apple picking-- Yeah, we do that, too. The kids do it as a field trip (sorry, Nance!) and we go every year as a family. I think we will either go this Saturday or next. And we do the whole hayride thing, etc.

Mostly families aren't problem - it's school groups! :scared: We had the group of 75- 7th graders this morning. As predicited - the kids were great - the adults with the group...well - let's just say they need to take a lesson in manners from the kids! :sad2:

I will do a short 3-miler tomorrow as I rest up for the half marathon on Sunday. I am still wigging out about that, but not as bad as before.

What time is your race on Sunday? I want to determine approx. what time you'll be at your 10 mile mark....you know, that time when all of a sudden you are going to have a picture of Rosie the Rivetor in your head as she yells at you to "shut up and do it!" :rotfl2:

Nancy, I think you will like Planet Fitness. It isn't really for the novice as there is no instruction and the staff is pretty much a bunch of receptionists/janitors, but if you are used to working out it has a lot of equipment for a low price.

According to the girl who is going to be the gym manager, they are actually going to have personal trainers there....not sure if that means "on staff" or...???...allowing trainers to use the facility??? It is opening soon (first week of Oct. hopefully) so we'll go check it out again this weekend. But yeah- it's definitely "no frills"

I am considering just buying a bag for home, I think D would let me keep it in the garage.

I think my family would be scared of me if I had a punching bag...:scared1:

Ok, throwing my 2 cents in here - because this is hot button with me. I do this with all respect in the world. I think as women we often put ourselves last. agreed. ::yes:: If you don't take care of yourself you won't be any good to anyone else....and I mean that in a whole "big picture" way. Prioritize and make sure your needs are being met on a consistant basis and you'll be better able to function in all situations....JMHO

I wanted to get the rest of your post - how do you do that cool quotey thing again, Nancy?

Oh - do you mean that thing where you click on the little arrow doo-hickey (which I am fairly certain is the technical name, is it not Kat??:confused3 ) that takes you back to the inital post that is being quoted?

so, I got my first birthday gifts today. Ready?

From my inlaws...food.

 Mine would do the same thing. Down to the "if you eat only 2 nibbles a day, it's only 1 point...." :confused3 I don't get it either...must be a generational thing

From my friend Teri who just lost 80lbs and has another 50lbs to go...a pilates gift certificate for a private session.

Sweeeet. Does she want to be my friend too?? :lovestruc

I'm headed to bed - got another long day ahead of me tomorrow - plus - I GOT MY BIKE BACK :cool1: goin' for a ride in the morning.
