In love with Aulani

I need to preface this review with a little background on me....I am a HUGE Disney fan, and have regularly visited both WDW in Florida and Disneyland in California for years and years, stayed in many, many Disney resorts and sailed on Disney Cruise Line multiple times. I am currently an Annual Passholder for both FL and CA, so this hopefully puts into perspective my love of Disney. Needless to say, I was so excited that we were going to be staying 5 nights at the Aulani Resort this summer as part of a 3 island tour of Hawaii. I've been building excitement for it since Disney announced Aulani was being built. I was beyond excited to see Aulani with my own eyes.

The people: the staff at Aulani were absolutely wonderful, and just what I had come to expect from a Disney resort. Friendly, helpful, warm, and smiling. It started the minute we arrived and were greeted with leis and necklaces in the lobby. Big kudos to the staff at Aulani for making us feel so welcome. After moving on to other resorts, we very much missed the Disney touch of the staff at Aulani.

The room: We had a pretty standard room with 2 Queen Beds and just an ok view. I actually could see the ocean off in the distance, but it was more of an island view. Next time, I've decided I want a pool or ocean view, even though it costs quite a bit more. I also may upgrade to a villa next time. The room was very nice, but wasn't what sold me on this resort.

The lobby: Once you come here, you will understand. I am fascinated with the lobby at Aulani. I loved looking at it, sitting in it, hearing the music they played in the lobby each day. Gorgeous lobby that I looked forward to being in each day, and was melancholy about leaving when our stay was over. FYI, you can purchase the Aulani lobby music on iTunes, which was exactly what I did as our shuttle was pulling away from the resort on our last day there.

The pools: Wow factor here! I love, love, love the lazy river. I miss it, actually! Nothing like plopping down on a tube and relaxing the day away. This was a big plus for me. All of the other pools were also very nice, including the keiki area, and especially the infinity pool. Gorgeous! The pools at Aulani will not disappoint you! There was something for everyone here.

The beach: Here was my negative. I didn't actually love the beach. Don't get me wrong, it was nice, it was clean, but it was kind of boring. I have older kids and they were really missing the waves, because this beach is as calm and still as can be. More of a cove, really. Now for families with toddlers, this beach is probably a dream! My older kids liked the beaches at the other resorts we stayed at much better. They did rent the stand-up paddle boards at Aulani, and enjoyed doing that activity. We hung out on the beach a lot, but for pre-teen to teenage kids, I think this beach is lacking excitement. Plenty of chairs, though, and nice sand for building castles. The beach was very pretty to look at, anyway.

The food: Loved it! Ama-Ama is a must-try for both dinner and breakfast. It was so memorable and delicious! The buffet restaurant was also decent for both dinner and breakfast with the characters. We loved the quick service offerings near the pool, and specifically, the coconut shrimp, the portuguese sausage dogs, Mickey bars, and the shaved ice stand. I really can't count how many shaved ices we purchased during our stay. YUM! We also did what many others suggested, and ate at Roys, Monkey Pod, and Just Tacos across the street. All good choices near Aulani.

Other: The Starlit Hui was a neat show, and definitely not to be missed while at Aulani. The Menehune interactive game was really fun, and my youngest son enjoyed trying it during our stay. The two gift shops were filled with lots of treasures, so you will have plenty of chances to stock up on Aulani souvenirs while you are there. The Photo Pass service is awesome, because our family was able to purchase a CD filled with photos of our vacation and we had several pics of us all together. Live music was available just about everyday, and we enjoyed buying tropical drinks (and virgin ones for the kids) while listening to live Hawaiian tunes. Excursions: We did the Hawaiian Fire Surfing Lessons, which were a blast, and also the shorter tour of Pearl Harbor. Both tours included pick-up and drop off at Aulani, which was so convenient for us.

I would hands down recommend this resort to any Disney fan or any family traveling with children. It's a special place that I know you will enjoy! I know that I'll go back someday. Unfortunately, distance is a factor, so I won't be able to visit Aulani as often as I do the parks. Until I make it back again, I will treasure the days that I was lucky enough to spend at Aulani. To put it simply, I've completely fallen in love with Aulani!

If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them. If you have already booked Aulani, rest assured that you are going to have an absolutely amazing time!

Great review! Can you compare Aulani with the hotels you stayed at on the other 2 islands? I am curious about how it stacks up against other hotels. Is it worth the premium cost?

Well, I definitely think it was worth the premium cost. In actuality, I think the resorts we stayed at on the other islands were more expensive in comparison. We had an absolutely wonderful time at Aulani, and couldn't wait to visit there. Again, I'm a huge Disney fan, so there was probably no way I could possibly travel to Oahu without staying at Aulani. It was a no brainer for us to stay there for part of our trip. It was a little "Disney fix" while in Hawaii.

Now, I do not regret island hopping and trying other resorts. I absolutely loved seeing Maui as well as the Big Island, and had I stayed only at Aulani the whole time I would have missed those experiences. We stayed at the Grand Wailea on Maui and the Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island. The Grand Wailea had a very beautiful view and very luxurious room, and a beach that was more exciting for my kids. The pool, though large and advertised as very kid friendly, did not compare with Aulani's. The staff here couldn't compare with Aulani either. I'm not saying that the Grand Wailea staff was rude, but they were not Disney. We missed that Disney friendliness from the minute we moved resorts. Something as simple as asking for towels by the pool was so much more pleasant at Aulani. The room at the Grand Wailea blew away our room at Aulani, however.

The Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island was so beautiful and serene. It was a five star experience in my opinion. Loved the beach here, with great snorkeling. The staff was amazing, the room was gorgeous. The pool was only ok, particularly after having stayed at the other 2 resorts. I'm so glad we hopped islands and stayed here. It gave us another Hawaiian experience, and it was beautiful.

So, to answer your question, when comparing the resorts I would say Aulani was the most fun, the most kid friendly, had the best pool, and the most amazing staff. The other resorts had more luxurious rooms/beds and views for the cost. The other resorts were located on more beautiful islands and oceanfronts (sorry Oahu). The next time I go to Hawaii, I would do a similar itinerary with several nights at Aulani and stops at one or two other islands. I think that Aulani is a must-see, but so are some of the other Hawaiian islands. That way, you get a more full Hawaiian experience.

Hope this helps!:)

I love Aulani too - I am thinking to recommend it to my Mum when she visits Hawaii next year, we will be with her for some of the trip, but I was wondering if it wouldn't feel the same to someone of her age traveling with no kids -any thoughts on this?

Hmmm...well, my parents came along with us, and I know they had a great time. They did some of the more adult activities such as getting cocktails at the bars in the evening. They are Disney fans, also, though and they enjoyed being at Aulani with the grandchildren. I also heard the spa is very nice as well as the adult pool, but I wasn't able to visit either of those areas on this trip.

Did you notice if it was necessary to book excursions before your arrival or can we wait until we get there? We are staying 10 days and only at Aulani. Never been to Hawaii, so we'd like to do a few excursions.

I'm a little concerned that you didn't LOVE the beach. That's what I am going to Hawaii for! ;-)

Hi there,

As far as excursions, I did book all of ours in advance of coming. I also made restaurant reservations in advance. I'm not sure if it's absolutely necessary to do that, but I am one of those "over-planner" types, so doing this put my mind at ease. That being said, it did seem as though people were booking excursions with the concierge while there. If a Pearl Harbor excursion is something you are hoping for, I might go ahead and book that one ahead of time, because I do hear that they tend to sell out since there are only a limited number of tickets per day. Also, if you want to get a sunset dinner at Ama-Ama restaurant, you might want to book that ahead as well, just to get the best sunset time.

Now about the beach....it wasn't a horrible beach or anything like that. Very pretty, in fact, with nice sand! The Aulani staff were great on the beach as well. It just wasn't my favorite beach of the trip. I'm sure that there are many people that would disagree and say the beach was awesome, particularly with younger kids. I have 2 tween-aged boys who found it to be a bit boring, because it was extremely calm, shallow, smallish, and protected in a cove. They were looking for a little more waves or more excitement. Not sure what your kids' ages are, but for little ones, it's great. My two nieces are 3 and 5 years old, and they loved it! Their parents loved it too, because safety wasn't a big concern on this calm beach.

The other thing is, I have to confess that I might be a bit spoiled! I've been lucky enough to be on some beautiful beaches in my lifetime, and the one at Aulani, though nice, just wasn't at the top of my list. It pains me to say that, because I'm such a Disney lover that I really WANTED to love this beach. Even island hopping in Hawaii this trip, I felt as though the beaches at some of the other resorts were a little better, a little more bluer water, better snorkeling, etc. But please don't let my comments scare you! The beach is very nice and we had a wonderful time! Aulani was such a wonderful place to be. Are you renting a car at all? If so, with just a short drive you can check out a few other beaches with different features, and then come back to the serenity of the cove at Aulani. Best of both worlds there! I absolutely loved Aulani, and I have no doubt you will have an awesome vacation. Any other questions, just ask away!

Thanks for the response! Our DD will be celebrating her 21st birthday while we are on the trip. No need for us to worry about a little one anymore! Lol.
Just returned from a mother -daughter WDW trip and we had a blast. Been setting up reservations for our January WDW trip for DH birthday. I'm just not in the mood to make excursion plans for Aulani! I really would like to wait to get there to decide! We know we want to do a catamaran snorkel day and probably the horseback riding (DD is on her university equestrian team) and DD wants a surfing lesson. She & DH will rent a kayak one or two days (they are available at Aulani, right?) , we'll visit Pearl Harbor, and all I want to do is sit on the beach with my book and some rum drinks! :-)

Wow, what a fun way to spend her 21st!! Grab some Pina Coladas and listen to the nightly live music at the bar near the buffet area. We did that several nights while we were there. We did the surfing lessons excursion with Hawaiian Fire, and I'd highly recommend it! All 6 of us were able to get up on the board after the lesson. So much fun! They do rent kayaks there at Aulani, and also the stand-up paddle boards, which my boys enjoyed. You are going to have a wonderful time! Enjoy every minute of it!:)
