well its almost that time every parent truly dreads...my baby is going for his first shots in 12 days. It looks like the cdc has added some to their recommendations...prevnar...1 in 3 kids gets a fever from this shot? Thanks, I think I'll skip that one...it looks like Fl does not require it for school, so can I refuse it...also, how have your kids made out with their shots lately? Thanks Eileen

You can refuse any immunization you want. When your child does get in school, if you don't want him immunized, there is a waiver you can get I have heard. My kids (5 and 3) never had a reaction to any immunization. Except for when my daughter got the rotovirus shot and actually got rotovirus--that was great.

prevnar is a life-saving pneumococcal vaccine. My son had to take tylenol for 24 hrs. after receiving the shot but that wasn't a big deal to me - if it protects him from a deadly pneumonia THAT is worth a tiny fever IMHO - but to each their own.

Fever is one of the main reactions that can be seen with most of all the childhood vaccines. Prevnar is a really valuable vaccine because of the risk the disease poses to children under age 2 years. I work in a pediatric medical office. I am the phone nurse. I can honestly say that in the entire time that our office has been giving this vaccine, I have NEVER gotten a call about a fever reaction from the vaccine that was outside of what we normally expect. I have received only a handful of calls about fever with the vaccine and all of those calls were after the second dose, just like the Vaccine Infomation Sheet warns parents of. After almost every vaccine appointment, we advise the parents to give Tylenol every four to six hours for the first 24 to 48 hours to avoid fever and the discomfort that can come along with vaccines.

Well I cant really talk about this subject with out getting emotional, and I DONT want a debate.

All I will say is, do the research your self, about the vaccines and the diseases they prevent. Dont let anyone including the CDC or the state tell you what to inject into your child.

For the record, I am not "anti-vaccine", just someone who knows that vaccines are not 100% with out very severe reactions, but yes I do realize MOST of the time they do more good than harm.

my DS had a very severe reaction to a shot...scared me to death!! My oldest DD had no reaction so this was a new thing for me. My DD6 hasn't had any shots (other then the newborn ones) and she's been my healthiest yet. Just read all the facts so you can make an informed decision.
