Just came from the doctor and he prescribed Imitrex. I'm almost scared to take it. Can anyone share their experiences with me? I actually feel a headache coming now- but I have lived with them for so long I just don't know if I need to take this.

I took it in injection form when it first came out. It stopped working for me, so I am now on Relpax. I didn't have any side effects other than a tingly feeling in my hands. There is no need to suffer.

I am happy you brought this one up!!

I've lived with migraines and I too just got Imitrex. Up until a couple of months ago Excedrine Migraine was working. I want to hear every one's experience with it!!

I tried taking the Imitrex for Migraines.
It made me very dizzy, lightheaded, weak, nauseous, couldn't breathe...you name it. It did get rid of the headache, I just couldn't deal with all the side effects.

Take the pill. I had one on Saturday. It helped me to feel human again. It's not my favorite migraine pill. I've also taken Relpax and Maxalt. I like the Maxalt best, then Relpax and then Imitrex.

What's the side effect of not taking it? A debilitating headache that makes you want to vomit and keeps you in bed? Yep, I'd accept pretty much anything over that.

DH was prescribed this, and it has worked wonders, with no side effects. He feels relief after just 20 minutes. Just lie down in a quiet dark room and relax. He says he actually feels his head "pulse"... pain, then less pain, etc.

I have taken it a couple of times and I think it's a wonder drug.

Good Luck

Imitrex works really well for me. The only side effect I've experienced is drowsiness..... not "I have to sleep all day" dowsiness but just kinda sleepy.
I have also taken Relpax, it made me vomit.

Take the Imitrex, no need to suffer. You won't know how you repond to it unless you take it. It could be your wonder drug as it is to many other people who suffer from migraines.
Feel better.

I was prescribed it a while ago and it didn't help me much. The only side effect I noticed was tight, almost warm feeling my head got. It wasn't terrible or anything, just odd.
Hope it works for you, migraines are a terrible thing to deal with.

I took Imitrex for migraines and it worked great on the headaches but left me feeling "tingly" for lack of a better word. Like my arms and legs were asleep. I mentioned the side effect to my doctor and she switched me to Relpax and that works great for me.

I was scared to take it at first too. Trust me, take the pill - you won't believe the difference it makes!!!

I've gotten migranes so bad that if someone told me crack would cure it I'd be tempted ;) :rolleyes1 .

Anyway, I take Zomig and it really works if I indentify the pain as a migrane fairly quickly. I can't wait until the pain is full blown. The biggest challenge is indentifying the beginning of a migrane.

I haven't had any side effects at all.

Imitrex is available in pills, nasal spray, and injections. The nasal spray works wonders for me. One squirt and almost instantly, my headache's gone. DH teases me about "snorting drugs up your nose", but we're both so glad I've found something that works. It was really a surprise, too, because I first tried the pills and they did nothing to help.

I took this years ago and it made me feel tingly too. The last time I took it my blood pressure skyrocketed and my dr said never to take again. I now take relpax. However, imitrex was a wonder drug when I could take it.

My wife could be the poster child for Imitrex. She has had migraines since she was a teenager and they got worse as she got older. She was first prescribed Imitrex when it was only available in injectible form. She has since gotten scripts for the nasal and pill form. She usually takes the pills at the first sign of a migraine. She uses the nasal spray or injectible if she waits too long to take the pill (since your digestive system shuts down whenever you have a full blown migraine and the pills don't work).

She would do a testimonial for Imitrex in a heartbeat. And she never goes anywhere without some in her purse.

I gave it to my 11 yo son a couple of weeks ago when his migraine went into the third day. I held my breath because *I* am always getting side effects from meds. He did just fine, had to take a 2nd pill and then the headache was gone. No side effects for him. I understand your hesitance. Just make sure you have someone with you.

I just remembered. The first time that Sue took Imitrex, she had to do so in the doctor's office so that they could observe her and see if she had an adverse reaction. This may not be as much of an issue with the pills as it was with the injectibles.

I have taken Imitrex in the past and it works well, I can "feel" the rush of the drug and although it is a crazy sensation it is well worth it. I prefer to take zomig....I carry this stuff everywhere I go!!!!

I take the injectible form of Imitrex. It almost always is a miracle drug for me. Sometimes I get a rebound migraine the next day though. I experience a tingly sensation, as well as a feeling of my throat tightening up a bit, but not bad. I feel drowsy, not narcotic drowsy, but I usually do need to lay down for 30-60 minutes. 9 times out of 10, within about 60-90 minutes I feel good as new! It's wonderful! Certainly better than a migraine for 2-3 days!

I am very interested in looking into the nasal spray- I will talk with my doctor about it next time. The shot stings! But not as bad as a migraine hurts!

I had a perscription for Imitrex about 10 years ago. When I tried to take a pill when the "aura" started, it was already too late. Like another poster said, my digestive system shut down and I would throw up the pill, so it was useless. It did nothing for me. I only tried the pill about 3 times, and had no real luck. I was also worried about taking pills, as there are heart-related warnings. :(

So I just took nothing after that, just lived with the headaches. Fortunately, a couple of years ago, I realized through a stroke of luck that my migraines had a chiropratic cause (pressure on my right side neck), so if I have good posture and don't twist my neck too much to the right, no more migraines! :cloud9: It is a wonderful feeling to be free of that beast. What a difference in my life not fearing a migraine out of the blue anymore. :)

My 21yr old ds has taken imitrex injectable for several yrs. It is the only thing that touches a migraine once it starts. His migraines have been diagnosed as complex migraines and the aura is scarey and the headache is unbelieveable. He is also taking a daily preventive which seems to working, but he carries his Imitrex everywhere he goes.
