I freelance as a photographer. I pretty much only shoot rock bands, primarily live shots, some promo stuff. I only work with bands who are signed to major labels, or headed in that direction--no local "garage" or cover bands.
Last night I went to photograph a band who I've photographed twice in the past. To make a long story short, the first time I shot them last May, I took a photo of the bass player that has kind of taken on a life of it's own. When I got new business cards made, a friend of mine who is a graphic artist came up with a half dozen designs, and used that photo in one. It was a striking design, and I got permission from him, through his manager, to use it.
At any rate, last night as I was walking into the venue, he was coming off his tour bus. I walked up to him and handed him my card and thanked him for letting me use his photo on it. He was so funny--he gave me a huge bear hug and thanked me--said it was the "best photo ever", and it was the photo that "made him famous".
Bottom line, they are getting ready to release their second CD (Warner Bros), and the label wants to use my photo in the liner notes! He said that they were planning on getting in touch with me after the holidays to work it out!
