I'm scared to fly!!! How am I going to get to WDW and Hawaii????

Nunzia,
I'm glad someone survived that long trip to tell about it! :rotfl2:

I am petrified of flying, actually walked off a plane once I was so scared. Around 15 yrs ago I went to the doc and told them about my situtaiton. Ever since I get a presecription for atavan, zanax, - same thing. I take one two hours or so before the flight and one 1/2 before take off. It takes away the anxiety and I can function perfectly. they dont make me sleepy.
I can understand those that suggest therapy - but travelling 40,000 feet at 500 mph is freakin scary, no matter how you slice it! I thinks its a rationale fear! :confused3

I am not afraid to fly. I solo'ed in a Cesena 152 when I was 16 years old. But am I the only one who has no interest in spending $1000+ per ticket to fly to HI. Not sure I would even do it for $500 a ticket.

I was looking for a thread like this.
I never used to be afraid of flying but since I've had children, it has been worse. We went to DL when my daughter was 14 mths old and my son was 5 yrs old . THat was the first time I travelled on a plane in over 15 yrs. I was terrified. Did it again, and it wasn't any better. I always swore that I wouldn't allow my fear of flying stop me from travelling and I won't let it. We are planning a Florida trip next April 2011 and I am already getting nervous. I think I will need some xanax or something. My dr used to fly his own plane and doesn't know why I am anxious (going to beg him to come with us and be our babysitter:rotfl2:) I am a back seat driver and having lack of control drives me insane. I hate turbulents.

Anyways, thankyou for posting this thread!!! I am glad that I am not alone!!

We have a couple of very anxious flyers in our family. MIL is the worst and she rubs off on the kids. Funny thing is, FIL ...:lmao:...get this...:lmao:...has booked the Hawaiian vacation he's always wanted for them for their 50th anniversary this year! She's panicking already and the trip is in October!

I'm not an expert on therapy or anything, but with my kids, we seem to have some success in relaxing them by being logical about it. We do the old, "do you know how many flights successfully take off and land every day across the globe?" That kind of conversation. We take a look at the flight tracker website to get a visual for how many flights there are in the air and all are safe.

Does anyone know where we could get an actual number of how many domestic or worldwide flights there are on an average day/month or year? I think we'd all be surprised and I'd love to know.

Answered my own question! Got this from ask.com:

"On any given day, more than 87,000 flights are in the skies in the United States. Only 35 percent, or just over 30,000 of those flights are commercial carriers, like American, United or Southwest. On an average day, air traffic controllers handle 28,537 commercial flights (major and regional airlines), 27,178 general aviation flights (private planes), 24,548 air taxi flights (planes for hire), 5,260 military flights and 2,148 air cargo flights (Federal Express, UPS, etc.). At any given moment, roughly 5,000 planes are in the skies above the United States. In one year, controllers handle an average of 64 million takeoffs and landings.

For every one flight you see listed on an airport monitor, two you don't see show up on air traffic controllers' screens. It would take approximately 7,300 airport terminal monitors to show all the flights controllers handle in a single day and approximately 460 monitors to show the number of flights being handled at any one time."

87,000 times every day a flight is safely delivered to it's destination. Those are amazing numbers. I hope that helps someone feel safe!

I do not fly commercially now. I am perfectly happy to get in the inlaws little plane and go for a flight.

I used to fly commercially. I took serious drugs. Therapy, hypnosis, emdr never did a thing for me. Drugs worked like a charm. I also found the more I flew the less drugs I needed. So do not rule them out.

Thank you. I will be thinking of this in April when we fly next. Dh and I also decided to do a parents only trip in Jan when I have a conference. I was planning on dh and I flying separately, just in case. We may do that, but I'll feel better about it if we have to fly together.

I am clausterphobic and get really bad anxiety attacks. I am soooo scared to fly that even when I went to the airport to pick up my mom and saw the airplanes I got an anxiety attack.

What do you do get over this? I'm in California and really want to take my kids to WDW and Hawaii!!! We have been visiting Disneyland several times a year and they are still not tired of it...but they have been asking about going to other places.

I would appreciate any suggestions as we will soon be DVC members!! just waiting on the paperwork!

Thank you in advance!

Your kids would really enjoy riding in an RV bus, since John Madden no longer does Mom/Sun night football and has the same thing as you ask him if you could use it.As for getting to Hawaii, call up Tiger Wood,he has alot on his mind as of late and I don't think it is his big boat he owns, ask to use it. :thumbsup2
