I'm running the WDW Marathon Jan 2012! Who is with me??

With the stroller, make sure to alternate left and right pushing. You do not want to build up only on one side.

yeah...about that. i try to remember to do that. i really do. but pushing with my left hand is just so harrrrrd!! will work on it!

I signed up this week for my first full marathon! I'm excited and scared. And I also felt pretty emotional about signing up. A year ago I started the Couch-to-5k. Then I somehow signed up for the Disney 1/2 Marathon (for 2011). I said that I didn't really aspire to run a full marathon. I was just happy to be running a 1/2. Then I ran the 1/2 and saw all those Mickey and Goofy medals and decided I could do it. So here I am!
I'm running the More Magazine 1/2 marathon here in NY in 2 weeks. And then I'm looking for a fall 1/2 marathon (can't do W&D, sadly). I'm planning to really start my marathon training in July (26 week plan) but hoping to have another race or 2 to help me stay motivated and focused.

Amanda

hey amanda! congrats on signing up! looking forward to training along with you! where is the more magazine half? it's too late for me now to do it since i haven't been keeping up on my training since the princess half but maybe next year. where in westchester are you?

****

i did 40 min on the elliptical today. it's so boring working out inside. i kinda sorta wish i had a treadmill but i feel like the running in hot and cold extremes toughen me up and like coach said, it makes the races much easier.

i'm interested to know what training programs people are following. i did the half in 2:22 and really don't have much of a goal for the marathon except to finish it (that was my goal for the half). ultimately i'd like to not be the last person.

i saw amy's facebook saying that she was going to ride expedition everest when she does the marathon. how great does that sound??

Nancy ~ I'll be doing the run/walk a marathon program in Marathoning for Mortals. I used the half plan for that one (and the NYC tomorrow...though that was adapted because of the 9 weeks between Disney and tomorrow) and will use it for DL (and most likely W&D). It's treated me well so far and I like it. The one alteration I'm making is rather than doing my long runs for a certain distance, I'm doing them for a certain time. So my longest will be 5-5.5 hours since I'm thinking my finish time will be in the 5:30-5:45 range. We'll see. I'm not going to really set a firm time goal yet.

i have that book! i bought it when i started running back in june or july. i'm going to pick it back up and re-read it for the marathon training now. i tend to only get in two weekday training runs and i think i remember it calling for me. as the weather gets better and i can take the kiddo out i'm going to try for 3 weekday and 1 weekend run. we shall see.

I just found out about this, and hope I can do it too! The only thing that makes me nervous is that ride makes me dizzy sometimes since you're jerking around in the dark. Hopefully that won't happen during the marathon...

Nancy...if you are busting out a 2:22 for your first half, you are not going to be last at the marathon, even if you slow down a lot! :goodvibes

I had a terrible run yesterday...wasn't watching the weather and it was 84 degrees. Not that I'm complaining, but I might have run earlier had I known it was going to be that warm. Almost 8 miles, but very ez pace. Have spent nearly 9 hours on the bike this week and legs are fried.

Funny, I'm more psyched about coming back for Goofy/Dopey than for my Ironman race this summer! Weird.

A couple did this in 2011. She posted a trip report on Passporter and talked about it on Lou Mongello's podcast. They were on Lou's running team. :thumbsup2

Probably yes on the Expedition Everest... though you really need to see how you feel. Think about sitting for 3-4 minutes at mile 17.5 and then having to run another 9 miles. The reason the EE works for many marathoners is that the park opens at 9, or 3:30 into the race. Because of the marathon and the near impossible path to get to the EE, the ride is clear of most park guests. Since this started a couple years back and is becoming a thing... expect a little control from Disney in the next year or two.

The ToT I would say no. We pass the back of the ride at mile 22.8. You would have to pass through a cast member gate to ride and then get back. So the Mile 23 side is really not an option. You could jump out at the park entrance a half mile later... But you will be fighting crowds all the way down Hollywood to get there. Also, since the park has been open for a while by the time most of us pass, you would be waiting for the line. Sorry, but would not plan on it

I didn't think about the ride being open because the park was open to guests at that time. It makes sense, but I was thinking that it was an entertainment type stop in AK instead. Does disney not want people stopping to ride the ride during the marathon?

i guess i could see disney not being too thrilled about runners getting on a ride, especially that late into the race. i'm a roller coaster lover but, who knows, after running for 17 miles i may not be all that happy about going fast and feeling like i'm upside down. i could see the potential for people to get pretty sick, especially if they are dehydrated! the medical problem potential could be pretty dangerous.

still, if this wasn't my first marathon and i wasn't so afraid of not finishing i think i would really love to go for a ride!

How I'd feel after getting off has me worried about doing it too. It won't be my first marathon by that time, but it will be my first time running a marathon after running a 1/2 marathon the day before. It would be awesome to say I rode it during the marathon, but now that I really think about the ramifications to riding a ride like that after 17 miles of running, I'm thinking I'll pass on it. If I'm doing pretty well in the marathon and have a good time cushion, I might rethink that decision during the marathon, especially if I run with my brothers and SIL's and they want to ride it.

Yeah, I've heard of people doing this, but I wouldn't want to wait, and would hate it if my legs seized up from standing and sitting.

Now...I have seen people at the BOP of the marathon enjoying a beverage as they walked the last mile through the World Showcase. I was going to do that in 2010, but it was too cold! So, I'll probably wait until after I clean up and then get back to Epcot for my traditional post-race beverage! :goodvibes

well guys...

you know the expression "life is what happens when you're busy making plans"?? well, yeah, you could say i was just hit with a big snafu in my plans for the marathon. wasn't feeling great on sunday and even skipped a run (i had done the elliptical the day before so i didn't feel too bad about it). couldn't shake it and felt like i either had the flu or mono! sent DH to cvs and yadda yadda yadda got a positive pregnancy test. to say this is a complete shock just doesn't do it justice. i'm struggling with some big emotions here.

i want this marathon so bad. but looking at the calendar, it's not really possible to do a marathon (even if i walked alot of it) 6 weeks after having a baby, is it?

i plan to continue running as i've been doing it for a year now and it's really good for me.

i know the marathon will always be there. i just want THIS one. i guess they won't give me a refund. lol.

Oh Nancy!!

Congratulations on the expected little one! I've got no words of wisdom, but wanted to say congrats!

Nancy--First off--Congratulations!

Second, there will always be other marathons. Since it's so early, it might be worthwhile to email runDisney and see what they say. :grouphug:

Congratulations! Maybe in 2013 you can have a birthday marathon celebration trip! I second the idea to email run disney and see what they have to say.

And see if you can get some "My mommy was supposed to run 26.2, but had me instead" onesies :)
