One of our 2 goalkeepers decided to throw a hissy fit and decided she didn't want to play goalkeeper any more (10 year old girl's team). I could make her but her heart wouldn't be in it so what's the sense? We have our jamboree this weekend which is 3 half hour games in about 3 hours.
I was trying to figure out what to do when Alison said "take me outside and show me what to do, we have to have a goalkeeper"
She seriously likes playing forward and did NOT want to do this, but she practiced like a maniac. When I asked her why she was doing it she said there is no I in team :)

Your daughter sounds like a classy young lady. I bet she makes a great goalie.:D

She has great team spirit. You have every right to be very proud of her!

WTG Alison!!!!

You have every right to be proud Alex, she is really stepping up.

Good Luck this weekend at the jamboree. Be sure to bring the foul weather gear!!!!

Debbie

Three cheers for Alison!!!!!! With that attitude you're going to go far, young lady!

You have great reason to be proud.

Sounds like a great young lady - kudos to you!!:Pinkbounc :bounce:

It sounds like Alison is a young lady of great character! I have a feeling she's ALWAYS giving you reasons to be proud of her. :)

Alison must have some terrific parents to have learned these values at her tender age. :)

Good for her. You should be proud of her. It's tough to do something you don't like but it sounds like she's very dedicated to the game.

Good luck with the jamboree. Hope Allison does a great job!

I'm so proud and I don't even know her!!
May she never lose that wonderful sense of sportsmanship :)

Sometimes, with a "green" keeper in, the entire team is more defensive minded and offensively aggressive to "protect" them.....it could be motivation!! :teeth:

Tell her if she is aggressive (dive for the ball and roll, etc) it can intimidate some of the opposing forwards from coming in close on her, but watch out for the feet of the aggressive ones - OUCH  ;)

Good luck...........but WHY does it always have to rain on jamboree days????????????????????????????????

I knew she was a special lady...Good for her!!! She is one cool kid!! Please let us know how the team did, and tell her we are proud of her and her attitude!!! She is already a winner :)

That's great that she offered, Alex! Good for her! I know from many years of my 3 kids playing soccer that Goalie isn't the most popular position, especially for young kids, who would prefer to run around more and "get their foot on the ball", as they say. Actually, I'm not surprised that the former goalie had a hissy fit, for that reason, as well as it being a lot of pressure and a tremendous responsibility to take on all the time. From my experience, "forward" seems to be the most popular position...it's just so satisfying to score the goals.

I could be wrong, but I thought that our town had guidelines based on national guidelines (??) stating that up to U10's or U12's shouldn't specialize in a certain position...it should be more instructional, with all the kids having opportunites to play all the positions. I got my son off a "better" A- team (for various reasons), where DS played only defense, to a C-team where the coaches are very in-tune to their interests. They put him where they need him and where he does best, as they do all the kids, when the game is a tough one, but take every opportunity to let them explore other positions. Funny...he never minded playing defense, but he is enjoying the opportunity now to move around; the older he gets, the less the opportunities will be there.

Good luck with the rest of the season! I'm looking forward to a summer break from seemingly endless soccer!

Wow, you should be so proud! I wish she was on the team I coach. She's a very responsible kid. Not only did she take up the slack for the sake of the team, she took the initiate to go out there and practice to try to be successful at it. Way to go Alison!

We do rotate them around Mary Ann, that's why I need more than 1. Usually I keep them in for a half and then they play something else in the other half. Everyone else rotates everywhere.
I think it's dangerous to let a kid play goalkeeper without any training, I have seen a lot of kids hurt that way. A girl on our third grade team broke her arm. There is no time to teach everyone to play it so it's my way of dealing with it.

What a wonderful story, Alex. I would be so proud--I know you are feeling very proud.

I am not at ALL surprised. :) Smart cookie you have there, Alex. ;)

Awww, what a sweetie! :D You should be very proud.

You go girl!!!
