Hi
First our cast of characters.
Me- Laura, a true terrified cruiser. Never been on a ship and never thought I would get on one.
DH-Tim
DD - Beth 13, and knows everthing
DD- Katie
DS-Emily
Dbil- Shannon
DNephew- Sam, a wonderful 1 yr old
DS-Anne
Dmom-Vicki
Ddad- Andy

The reason for the trip was that Andy was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in January. He knows it will get him, its a non-cureable cancer. Its in your bones and eventually moves to your lungs. He wanted one big fun trip with his family. They had sold their lake place the fall before and had planned to use the money to travel the world. Well time just got short so we decided to all go.

Now a bit of background on me. We live in MN. We go on a boat rather frequently. I water ski, tube, and float in the lake. My mom was an RN who worked the night shift on the weekend. I loved to watch TV while she slept on the weekend and Dad was totally cool with it. So one Saturday morning, the Poseidon Adventure came on. oh yeah that great 1970's flick. I watched the whole thing. From that point forward I was terrified to get on a cruise. I am somewhat convinced all ships will sink. But I made it 37 years before having to deal with this fear. My DisMoms were planning a cruise. We had conquered the parks and they wanted me to go along. Well I was this close to joining and then that ship in Italy had its oops moment and back to no cruise for me. When dad got sick, I threw out tons of ideas for a trip. Mom was settled that it should be a cruise, so I am sucking it up and trying it out. But seriously if I see Shelly Winters or Ernest Borgnine,(yes I know they have been gone for many moons but that will make it scarier) I will be walking around in a life jacket. totally crazy but I know it.

So now we are booked on level 8 with 3 staterooms. My family in one, my parents and sis in another, and the other sis's family in the last one. We are not that all together family. I had originally planned to be on other ends of the ship but I was out voted. At least we aren't in connecting rooms . Knowing who you are and who you are with makes it a lot easier.

Here we sit at 80 days to check in and I'm being the uber planner. Back on the Dis cramming my skull with all things Fantasy.

Join us:jumping1:

Hi Laura!! So sorry about your father's illness. I hope he gets to do as many things as possible from his bucket list - including a fabulous Disney cruise with you! I am pretty sure you will be able to survive the cruise without the ship sinking!!

Looking forward to read more about your plans! And if you manage to conquer your fear - just think of the possibilities of wonderful cruises with the DISmoms in the future!!

Hi Laura. I'm in too. Looking forward to reading about your ever so special trip

We are on the same cruise and also on Deck 8. I'm very confident that the boat won't flip over. The boats have seemed pretty stable on my past cruises and I have seen no large waves. I think we will be good, hope you have fun!

:grouphug:Wow life can change in an instant. And for once this change is that kind we love. Dad had an appointment with the radiologist. She has convinced him to give chemo and radiation a shot. They feel very confidant that they can shrink the tumor and maybe stunt the growth of it.:jumping1:. This is beyond fabulous news for us as we want dad around as long as we possibly can. However the course is 3 days of chemo and 21 days off for three cycles, then radiation for a bit and then another round of chemo. This bumps right into the May cruise. We have moved it out to October so we will something to look forward to while dad is kicking cancer in the booty. SO change is our middle name.

I love love love my girlfriend Ellen (podsnel) :disrocks:. She is the founding member of the DisMoms and a great travel agent. She is helping me book and rebook things.

Now we are on the October 17 sailing of the Fantasy. It will be my 40th birthday:cake:, our 17th wedding anniversary:lovestruc while we are out to sea. Guessing a trip to Remi may be in order for both of those things. In MN the kids have Oct 14-16 off of school for teachers break. We are going to head down a few days early so the DDs can visit WDW and Harry Potter world. Going to make the most of the airfare. :flower:

The other positive thing about pushing the date out is we have enough time to get passports done (without paying a rush fee) and for me to get into a bit better shape.

Between now and then we will be headed to Yellowstone. It was a family vacation that has planned a year ago so I may just add that to the PTR too.

Life is never dull!

life is a roller-coaster! We think we have it all scheduled and laid out and bam! a curve ball. So dad visited one surgeon and he detailed how invasive the surgery would be to get the tumor out. Dad decided against it as the chance of the cancer moving was too great. He would have to use a Cath to urinate, an colostomy bag and no other function in the swimsuit area. So he was planning on doing just radiation to keep the pain at bay. He sought out a medical oncologist to help him get the radiation. During that meeting, they convinced him to have chemo with the radiation to make the tumor shrink and alleviate some pain. The doctors keep saying dad is a good candidate to survive. He was walking up to 6 miles a day before this all started. Also we pushed him to get a second opinion at Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN. (its one perk of living in the frozen land) While there my parents met with the surgeon. This surgeon has performed over 100 surgeries like this since 1999. The surgeon is very confident that he can get the tumor out. The side effects are major no doubt but he has told my parents that he thinks he can save the nerves that control of the bowl, bladder and sexual function. The plan is to use the tibula as the bone replacement for the sacrum. (the cancer is in the sacrum and during the surgery they have to remove most of it to get the cancer) My dad will have a drop foot and will have a brace on his leg but they think that is a small price to pay for being around longer. :)

The outcome of the new treatment plan is that we need to cancel the trip. Oh well. I want my daddy around a lot longer. We will cruise someday. We just don't know when. Now I have to go back and think about what I want to do for my 40th birthday. We were going to go to Key West with friends but we will have to replan all of that too. Just need to keep swimming

I'm so sorry that your father and family have to go through such a whirlwind of UPS and downs. I'm sorry that you have to cancel your cruise, but I know you and your family need your father MUCH, MUCH more! I hope his treatments and especially his surgery goes well.

BTW, I had to respond to your TR because I was intrigued by your title. You see, I've started watching The Love Boat reruns lately. The episode I was watching on my DVR today had Ernest Borgnine in it!!!!! I grew up watching the show. I know the stories aren't realistic (especially from a cruise point of view; don't get me started). I love the nostalgia, seeing actors/actresses from that time era. So far, all the episodes I have seen, I don't remember them. The same episode also had Marie Osmond (not great acting) and Meredith Baxter Birney.

I'm sorry to hear about your father too. Your title of your trip report made me giggle.

Just caught the Love Boat episode with Joe Namath. Prayers to your father Laura.

thanks for the well wishes. I have always used humor to keep things going

Aw Laura, I hope your Dad is doing well and responds to the treatment. What a lovely experience to look forward to with lots to celebrate on board! We are also on 17 October crusie with my American family :flower1:
