Due to the last-minute circumstances of my trip next-week, my arrival day is a half-day at Epcot. I haven't been to WDW in over 20 years, so this is my first and only time to see IllumiNations.

My big question: Do I need the FP in order to have a good view?

I wouldnt get one. I had one in May when it wasn't a horribly busy day and the FP area was jammed. Way more crowded than the rest of WS. We skipped the FP and found a spot in front of Canada.

We prefer other viewing areas and there are plenty of places to have a good view around the lagoon.

You don't need a FP at all, but I'm one who enjoyed the viewing area during Christmas time. I say if you don't need the FP for anything else (you can use the refresh strategy to hunt for one later in the day), you might as well. It's just a matter of opinion though.

Not at all. Even during busier times, we've had no problem finding a good spot to view. Sometimes we had to walk around a little, but we were doing that anyway.

I agree with the others. You don't need a FP+. If you find one as a 4th, 5th, 6th FP+, etc., you could snag it, but it's not necessary. I don't particularly like that viewing area. If there isn't a special event being held in Italy, I highly recommend finding a spot around the lagoon there. If you arrive 30-45 minutes early, you shouldn't have a problem. If HEA is happening at MK at the same time, you can see Illuminations and the MK fireworks at the same time from that pavilion!
