CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. - Authorities have shut down the suburban Chicago home day care where prosecutors contend a dog fighting ring was being run.
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services spokesman Kendall Marlowe says the Maywood day care is under investigation. Marlowe says the day care had been licensed since March 2004 and for a capacity of seven children.
He says the day care received two complaints -- in 2006 and 2007 -- about dogs. But after DCFS officials made unannounced visits, dogs were only found in the garage and not near children.
On Wednesday, Cook County prosecutors announced that four people had been arrested and nine dogs recovered from a ring mostly run out of the day care.
Authorities say day care operator Arelia McShane told police that she was unaware of any dog fighting at the house.
A number for McShane couldn't immediately be located.
