I'm glad Charley's brother is doing better. Unfortunately Tamiflu has not been shown to prevent the serious complications that can occur with influenza - whether it be H1N1 or the seasonal influenza A or B.
Even the "emergency use" IV only drug peramivir has not been shown to prevent the serious complications - but only lessen the course of the disease by 12-24 hours.
Why do some get ill and die - while others have a mild illness? The medical community just doesn't know.
The WHO has been tracking resistant H1N1 and continues to be concerned that the continued overusage of Tamiflu will lead to widespread resistance. Seasonal influenza A is almost 100% resistant to Tamiflu - that's actually one of the reasons that there isn't a lot of it around - it hasn't been working the last couple of years.
