Ikea floor lamps - how do they turn on and off?

I am trying to figure out how Ikea floor lamps turn on and off. Do they need to be plugged in every time you want the light on? Or do they have a switch? (If they generally operate by plugging in - that just won't work for me - and then you've saved me a trip to the not-so-local IKEA store.

It depends on the lamp. I've had four general kinds: one operates with a knob-like switch on the lamp; the second with a cord-pull; the third with a floor-button switch; and the fourth with a switch on the cord itself. I've never heard of one that has to be plugged in. Check out their website--it should be evident on most of the pictures.

Really, even if it only plugs into the wall, you can go to the hardware store and add a simple switch onto the cord, at the base of the lamp. Or anywhere you want the switch, which would be more convenient.

It looks like this:

The inside looks like this, where you cut ONE wire and loop the open ends around two screws.

Alternately, you can plug it into a long extension cord or a power strip. Plug the extension cord into the wall and unplug it from the extension cord to turn it off. Or simply hit the switch on the power strip turning off all the power.

In the second pic option, the blue-tinged room, if you zoom on the cord, it looks like there's a button thing to step on to turn it on and off. You can see midway between the lamp and the wall with the zoom.

I've never seen a lamp from there without a switch of some kind and they're usually pretty advanced in the usefulness way.

I have a floor lamp (not the one you want) and it has a button thing on the cord on the floor. It's a round thing that looks like the white round thing in the second picture... Except mine is black. You can push it with your hand or foot.

I do like the idea of the power strip. I really wanted to send this lamp to DD - she has a huge lighting problem in her dorm. While - I could install the "cord-on/off" switch, I do not believe that DD could. The light would be stuck in a corner, behind her futon, and not convenient to get to.

But - since I am looking at resellers of IKEA products, and already paying more for that priviledge, in addition to shipping charges...I was hoping to just send this down to the dorm (and avoid more shipping charges).

So -the power strip would be a great solution!

Yes. In the middle picture if you zoom in there is definitely a switch you step on attached to the cord.

Looking at that second picture, it has the same floor button that I have on my two lamps. Simple push on/off button that you can hit with your foot.

I have a similar problem. I had a floor lamp without switch. I was controlling it with a dimmer type of foot switch. I pulled the cord from the electrical plug while the light on. Now the dimmer foot switch has no red light on. I tried to plug my floor lamp to an extension cord but light is not coming on. What might have happened? My friend said she checked the fuse in the dimmer swotch and it is not burned. What kind of damage did I caused to the floor lamp? Why the floor lamp and dimmer foot switch both have become nonfunctioning? I am planning to open the base of the lamp but I dont know anything about it.
