If your child is graduating college in May 2010?

Just curious?

Do they have a job lined up?

Do they plan on going for a masters etc?

I am new to this with the lst ds graduating. His degree is in business and right now he has an internship. They have just offerd him only a part time position after college. And I dont even know if that is just for the summer etc.

He said he will think about it. He also has about 3 other part time jobs during various seasons of the year. He said he doesnt want to do his masters right now.

Ultimately its his decision. I did tell him to go to the job fairs at school etc.

He commutes so he will probably just live at home some more, so that is basically not shocking to him. He might need a new car soon, so that would add to his debt etc. And of course the health care he would have to chip in for too.

With this economy I am thinking he should not be picky etc. Just getting your foot in the door.

So what about everyone else?

Well, my daughter is graduating in December. She batted around getting a masters or going to library school for a long time. Then on day, she came and said she's "taking a gap year."

Now all she talks about is traveling overseas and trying to find work in a foreign country. sigh

My daughter is graduating from college in May. She would love to get a teaching job, but it doesn't look good. Teachers have been laid off all over the country and many schools are being closed. Not good news for a new teacher.

If she can't find a teaching job, she plans on working part time and going back to school locally. She may go for a degree in broadcasting. She'd still like to pursue a career in the media.

Thankfully, yes, our DD has a job.

She was accepted to Teach For America and will be teaching high school mathematics in/around the Durham, North Carolina area. The job will help pay for her masters in education, and we are thrilled that it also has health insurance.

With today's economy, we consider her very lucky (she does too).

My Son will graduate. He got a full time job with Apple. They are going to pay for him to continue on.

my brother is graduating in may. He majored in sociology (not the best choice IMO) and he has not been able to find a job so he is going to be going back to school (same school he is in now) for another year and take more classes and hopefully he will find a job in the process. If he finds a job midyear he will leave school, if not he will finish the year

I was on track to graduate in May, but with us finding out that DH was deploying, and the economy being the way it is right now, we decided now was a good time for me to get my master's so I am going to stay in school.

MANY of my friends are having a very hard time finding jobs right now. It has been said more than once, that the BS is now what a high school diploma was when my mom's generation went to work.

DD21 will graduate in May with a double English/Spanish major. She doesn't want to go to graduate school yet. She's applying for jobs now in the international travel/student departments of colleges, and also admissions and/or advancement. So we will see if she gets anything right away. If not she'll come home and work until she figures out her next step.

My DD graduated this past Dec with a degree in Special Education. She was lucky to get a 6 week perm-sub job in Jan. The week that job ended, she got a call from the SpEd director at the school that she did her field base at her junior year. They were looking for a perm-sub for a job that will last until the end of the school year. Just last week, the SpEd director asked her if she had anything lined up for next year. She told her that she's got application out at many districts but so far now offers. She told her that they will have several openings in the district and at least one will be at the school that she's at right now. They said that they really want her to consider applying for them and will let her know before the official postings are made. We're in the suburban Chicago area and most, if not all schools are handing out RIF notices so she was pretty surprised. Although teachers are being reduced, it appears that is mostly in GenEd and SpEd teachers are still needed. DD is very glad that she chose SpEd since none of her friends with GenEd degrees have found teaching jobs. All are working as Para Pros instead.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that she finds something for next year. She was awarded a tuition waiver from the state that requires that she teach 2 out of the first 5 in SpEd in IL. If she doesn't, the waiver will convert to a student loan. There are provisions in the agreement about not being able to find a job but she hasn't looked too deeply into that yet.

She's been advised not to get her masters until she has a teaching job. Most districts do not like to hire teachers that get their master's right away because they're paying a higher salary for someone that doesn't have any experience.

DD graduated in December and has a Professional Internship at Disney in Communications, and has recently found out that she is extending until January 2011. Hopefully, she is on track for permanent work. We'll see. Good luck everyone.

DD is graduating in May with honors and majors in Elem. Education and Spanish..has not had time yet to apply for any positions as she has been very busy student teaching. The school has a career day planned for april and there they will meet up with school districts in the state that may have needs for teachers.

She has a part time job possible in administration that she worked through the winter break and a full time summer camp counselor position that she has been working each summer.

Going on to graduate school is not in the plans for very near future as she would like to get into a classroom for teaching experience. But she may think about ESL certification or working on extending the Spanish to Spanish Education.

She is looking forward to a short time without any studying she has carried 18 plus credits for the last five years and classes through summer breaks including an internation summer studies program. She graduates with 2 majors, 2 minors and honors college degree.....she has been busy and deserves a short break. I'm very proud of her.

Congratulations to your daughter! My oldest did that when she graduated-it was a huge surprise. She told us the day she graduauted that instead of coming home to grad school in economics, she was headed to LA to teach elem. school.

Anyhow, it was very challenging, but she loved it. It has led her to her present career, and she is still in touch with many of her friends from TFA-in fact, she did eventually go to grad school and worked as head of TFA in Miami for a short time. Good luck to your daughter.

My dd's only a junior this year but has already planned to on to grad school. Hopefully the job market will be better by the time she has her final graduation. I don't think she wants to move back home with us...

DS graduated in Dec with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was offered a job at his #1 choice and will be moving out of state in 2 weeks to begin his career. He roomed with 3 other guyys, all engineers, and all have been offered jobs. Phew!

His girlfriend will be graduating in May also in Mechanical Engineering (from a different school) and she was already offered and has accepted a job in the same state as my son's employment.

My DD is graduating from community college in May and will be transferring to a school and majoring in Inclusive Spec. Ed. I am rather concerned about her finding a job upon graduation and paying her loans but I don't want to discourage her from what she wants to do. I'm hoping Spec Ed may give her some more options.

Not of much help over here but I thought I'd put in my two cents. I'm not graduating in May, sigh, but in August. Only one class left Then I'm going to get a second undergraduate degree to fill in the time before grad school (I'm far from the cream of the crop, have to build up the resume first). I'm majoring in psychology, so grad school is a must or so I'm told. If you're DS is even considering going to grad school at some point, I say don't put it off too long. I know, for me, if I took off longer than a summer, I'd never go back. I have to stay in the routine. As for a job, I don't have one lined up yet, I'll just be happy to be working wherever I'm hired. Hopefully doing something related to psychology. Anyway, good luck to your DS whatever he decides

DD did a Fall '08 College Program. She loved it so much that she applied for a Professional Internship. Her major is Journalism. She applied to several Communications internships and got one of eight positions (I think). She absolutely loves the program and working at Disney. Recently, she even got to call some of the applicants to set up interviews. Don't know when your DD would be interested, but the deadline for most of the Fall '10 internships is March 26. There are several others on the Disboards that can tell you a lot more than I can - Brenna - where are you?

DD is graduating in May and planning on her Masters. She has one acceptance and is waiting to hear from two more schools.

Ds1 graduated almost 2 years ago this May. He was able to work in his field (bio) for about 7 months. ALl the time through school and even when he was working at the bio job he continued working at JCPennys. Last Sept he was offered a job with 35 hours a week. He has been doing that and has done a couple of bio interviews but nothing has come up yet. But at least he is working and paying his bills so we can't complain.

Funny story about ds's graduation day. We are sitting at lunch with our sons and ds's gf. Ds and his gf say they have something to talk to us about. At this time they were dating for about 3 years. Immediately I thought engagement since he was the age dh and I were when we got engaged. No gf wanted to get him a dog. SO we now have a wonderful yellow lab. No they are not engaged but are still dating. She is graduating in May and he is planning a trip to DW for her.
