OCT, which we have, is the perfect for our WDW travel (mostly Dec/Jan). Not sure yet if CA and HI destinations will change how we use DVC or my feelings on our UY?

To avoid having your points go into Holding (which makes them unbankable among other things), you need to cancel a trip 31 days or more in advance. So if you need to cancel an April trip and want to avoid the Holding account penalty, you would need to cancel some time in March at the latest. Since your banking deadline is March 31st, you would still be in your 100% banking window at that time. If you cancel an April trip after March 31st, you would be within 30 days of check in and couldn't bank those points even if you were still within your 100% banking window. So taking that into account, your Aug UY covers all your normal travel dates.

This assumes you use only current UY points for the trip. Any banked or borrowed points cannot be banked and would expire on July 31st no matter when you cancelled your trip. I sometimes use a few banked or borrowed points for our stays. With our Oct UY, if I had to cancel a May trip that used banked/borrowed points I would have a tough time using those points before they expired on Sep 30th since there is little chance of us going to WDW from Jun-Sep.

Yes, I'm aware of all of the above - I was referring to the possibility of a last minute cancelation which is the most likely scenario for us. Canceling an April trip in April currently means those points will expire on us with our August UY. An April UY would still allow us to make use of them in Aug, Oct or Nov. I didn't word the earlier post well enough to convey this scenario.

I am trying to understand the use year. what is the new 100 % ? Also, it seems you are talking about the best month, so that you don't lose points. Do you also look at the best month so you have the longest amount of time to book at your home resort in case there is no availability? Thanks!

A couple years ago (sorry I can't remember when) DVC changed the banking window from a graduated system to a 'simpler' one date system. Previously you could bank..
100% of your current UY points up to 6 months from the start of your UY
50% up to 9 months from the start of your UY
25% up to 10 months from the start of your UY

Now we are able to bank 100% 8 months from the start of the UY. Some members liked the extra 2 months to bank 100%, where others found a disadvantage that they could not bank some of there points 2 months closer to the end of their UY.

Also, it seems you are talking about the best month, so that you don't lose points. Do you also look at the best month so you have the longest amount of time to book at your home resort in case there is no availability? Thanks!

The best UY is all about being able to bank points, and does not come into play in making the reservation all. This can happen if you need to cancel a vacation, remove a day from your vacation, have a waitlist come through for a smaller point price accommodations or other such reservation manipulations where you have points you can't can't use for the rest of the UY and want to bank.

For example if I really only wanted a studio at BWV but only a 1 bdrm was available for October. I had enough points for the 1 bdrm, even though I didn't want to spend that many, and decided to reserve it and go on the waitlist for the studio. If my UY was December I would be out of luck with those leftover points if my waitlist came through after July 31 (which for BWV during Food and Wine Festival would be the case). If my UY was Oct it would not be an issue. (This example is using current UY points, no borrowed or banked points)

There is a great thread discussing UY. I wish I remembered it's name or originator to link it. Anyone have that?

It's looking like October is coming out a winner ( I guess I did get a good UY!!)
March and June not far behind, probably corresponding to the beginning of Spring break and Summer break.

Here is the thread lisareniff mentioned in her reply: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1942668

We have a June use year and an August use year, neither of which we chose ourselves. If I was to choose, based on how we travel now, I would choose September or October.

I looks like December bumped up to tie second place with March and June with the winner being October!

Thanks. You have satisfied my curiosity.

I also chose October, but as we were saying, September is just as good for us.

Thanks for the interesting poll lisareniff..

All 3 of our contracts have February and it hasn't been a problem for us but I'd probably pick October if I could choose now.

We have a Feb and Dec UY. Based on banking points (although, I'm usually borrowing ;):lmao:) I think the contract with Feb UY is fine for now. However, I think I would have preferred Sep UY for our other contracts instead of the Dec UY.

However, if I had to put all my contracts into one UY then it would be Sep.
