If you on a waitlist, do they automatically change you ressy if its becomes avaible?

We are on a wait list for DEC 21-26 at the WLV and AKL and are currently booked for SSR. Will they automatically change your ressy if it becomes available or is it better just to call and check daily? I know its a busy time of year and our chances are slim for getting it.
