if you have just a few points to rent - how do you make a reservation?

I thought the point owner made a reservation in the renter's name. But if the person renting the points needs only a few, say 8 or 9, how can a reservation be made? Or does the person who is renting need to rent at least as many points as would be needed for at least one night?

It might be another owner who is short of points to make their own reservation.
