Federal taxes cannot be collected until senate figures things out. If you call your airline they need to give you back the fees. About 25 per ticket.

Can you explain this any further. My daughter just flew the 20th and came home the 27th.

I contacted Southwest Airlines about our recent trip that meets the date requirements. They said I will have to file with the IRS to get a refund. After some research it appears that the IRS does not have it's refund process in place yet.

I flew a week ago (last Thursday there and then last Sunday back home)- does that count?

Thanks!

My families' return flights were on saturday- and as the taxes expired at midnight on friday I will be looking for a refund of that flight's taxes but not the first leg of our trip. Southwest for us too so we will watch the IRS website.

Maybe that was why Delta was charging $153 fares on expedia from Greensboro, NC to Atlanta for the dates I was wanting.... :confused3 More puzzling was the -$1 on the price quote... :confused3:confused3

This week, same flight times are $137 roundtrip.

I heard it on the news they said that Delta was trying to pocket this money and that the IRS said that if people call they had to refund the money. So I am not sure maybe it works different for every airline.
Sorry for not posting more details I was waiting for DH to come out of surgery so I post it from my phone.

Hmmmm interesting. We just flew home on Monday the 25th from FL. We had roundtrip and left on the 15th...would we be entitled to any refund?? Thanks

I am a bit confused by this. I bought airline tickets back in Jan for our trip in Aug. Does this refund apply to me? I bought 5 tickets so $20 a ticket is $100!!

To the best of my knowledge, no airline is currently giving back the fees and they are all requiring consumers to go through the IRS.

The thread from the Transportation Board:

From the Jet Blue website (similar information from all airlines currently):

Dear JetBlue Customers,

As you know, the laws authorizing the airline ticket tax and other aviation-related taxes expired at midnight, Friday, July 22, 2011. These federal passengers air transportation excise taxes are collected by JetBlue at the time of purchase and then paid to the IRS. Customers who purchased tickets on JetBlue on or before July 22, 2011, for travel beginning on or after July 23, 2011 may be entitled to a refund of these federal taxes paid.

Because these taxes are collected by JetBlue on behalf of the federal government and remitted to the IRS, Customers may obtain a refund for federal taxes paid on qualifying flights by submitting a claim directly to the IRS. We regret that we are unable to honor any refund requests at this time.

If you would like to request a copy of your receipt to include in your refund claim to the IRS, please email us at: dearjetblue@jetblue.com with your full name and confirmation number. Please also include "Expired Tax Refund Request" in the subject line of your email. We will review your request and provide an e-receipt with which you may submit to the IRS for the tax refund. Please allow 3 to 5 business days for processing.

Also note: The IRS is not yet set up to handle any refunds and do not have the forms released to apply for them.

IIRC this happened in the early 1990's too. Had to go thru the IRS for those refunds, and they took a while to process.

If it is about $25 per ticket and I bought 4 found trip tickets that is $200 right? and I just realized my son is flying home from Fla next Sat. He should get about $25 on that flight too. For $225 it is well worth doing whatever paperwork that needs to be done. That's a round trip ticket to Orlando from NYC on Jet Blue with a dinner at O'hana's in my book. WooHoo

did Delta make a statement to customer about this also?

how do you get the refund?

Does anyone have any updates on the tax refund from the airlines or IRS?
