Goodnight Moon
Sorry but No Elephants
Crispian's Crispin
Bambi
Mother Goose

"The Going To Bed Book" by Sandra Boynton. By the time my daughter was two I would just hold her before putting her in the crib and say it from memory. Very very soothing.

Yes, Yes, Yes! We say, "rock.......and.........rock..........and.........rock......(I wait for him to say - "to sleep")

PRECIOUS!

"The Little Fur Family" by Margaret Wise Brown. The book is covered in soft brown fur and it's the cutest little story about a day in the life of a little bear. The illustrations are very well done and the wording flows very nicely. I read that to DD every night for a long time. I remember this book from when I was a kid.

Love this thread.

My 2 year old son LOVES:

Jessie Bear, What Will You Wear, Nancy White Carlstrom
Bears In Pairs, Niki Yektai (he reads this one to me -- he loves to list all the bears).

My daughter's special favorite is
My Mama Had a Dancing Heart by Libba Gray and

The Surprise Doll by Morrell Gipson was my favorite. If you have a little girl - I HIGHLY recommend both of the above.

Another one my boys (now 18 and 22) loved is How Many Trucks Can a Tow Truck Tow? It's something of a tongue twister, and they always thought it was funny listening to Mom trip over the words. :)

My boys LOVED this book! I even made up a melody for the part where you are supposed to sing.

Robert Munsch Treasury 1 and 2. His other books (besides Love you Forever), are very silly, funny, and kids just absolutely love them.

Our favorite is "I Love You Because Your You"
By Liza Baker

I love all these suggestions!

I need to get some more potty training rewards for DS and I think I am going to leave work for a bit, stroll over to Borders and try to find some of these!

Thanks guys!

First of all, I only read your post, then went to post here, I didn't read them all, so if I post something that was already posted sorry. Second, that is one of the best ideas I have heard for a baby shower!!!

So here is the one book my library would have to have...

Courderoy. It makes me cry to this day when he gets a home.

I remember when I was a child, my grandma enrolled me in a book of the month club. The books were small, hard cover abridged versions of Disney tales--they had such beautiful pictures--Bambi, Alice In Wonderland, SnowWhite are just a few I remember. I still have some of them, I wonder if this club is still available? It was in the early 80's.
As for my fav children's books, it would be a toss between "The Giving Tree" and "Guess How Much I Love You"

Books my girl loves:

Bear snores on
Chicka chicka boom boom
Miss spider's ABC's
Tails
Each Peach Pear Plum
Kipper
Paperbag Princess
the Stella books
Are you my mother?
Cat in the Hat
Where the wild things are
Curious George
How I became a Pirate
Busy Little Mouse
Mary Englebrite's Mother Goose

As a baby gift I might give the Puffin Baby and Toddler Treasury which is full of wonderful stories and rhymes.

A note about the 20th century children's treasury - I think it is so big and heavy that children are intimidated by it - my girl loves many of the stories in there but will only pick the ones we have the actual story book for...

Have fun choosing!

DD's favorites are: Counting Kisses: A Kiss & Read Book -- by Karen Katz and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. She has Counting Kisses memorized and "reads" it to me.

My favorite was Gus Was a Friendly Ghost. I paid a fortune for the series on eBay during my pregnancy/nesting phase and now won't let DD touch them!!
