I often feel for CMs, who seem to have incredibly difficult jobs but who, for the most part, really keep it together. Explains why even the smallest show of kindness or patience or sympathy toward them goes such a long way and gets such a great reaction.

I agree. There is a similar site called stupidguesttricks.com that gives CMs a way to vent. CMs are vastly underpaid for the crap they sometimes have to deal with. Anyone thinking that the quality of CMs is sinking also needs to look at the type of people they have to deal with.
