If the no carryon rules don't go away how will that change your way of travel?

Since it's obvious that the new rules of no carryon bags when flying from Canada to the United States are not going away for a while, how has that effected your upcoming travel plans? For my family and I we decided that in December 2010 we are going to drive from Toronto - Orlando, which is something we have done each summer and know exactly what's involved. Now I realize there is always the option of flying out of Buffalo, however we also like being able to pack as much as we want and we can purchase more items then we would had we flown down. So even if these new rules had not happened it's a very good chance we would still decide to drive down.

Personally I believe if these rules don't change it could seriously hurt the airline industy across Canada because more Canadians would consider flying out of Buffalo or other American cities or just driving down in general and not even plan on flying.

We are a 3 hr drive from Seattle, and have been flying from there the past few trips because I can get a RT fare of $250ish so worth it, even factoring in an overnight hotel, where we can leave the car for free.
Now that the new regulations have come, I will continue flying out of the U.S.
We are flying SW out of SeaTac in a couple of weeks for $257 RT. Can't beat that.

I only wish we lived close enough to a major US city to fly out of. We will certainly be looking hard at our US travel. We may do more vacations close within Canada, or this may be the time to do some of the international trips we've had on the list - South America or Europe.

Just wondering why the no carry on issue would make you drive?? I think it is great - you can still have a small personal bag that carries a book or ipod or your laptop.

Why do you have to bring all of your luggage onto the plane with you too???

It takes up way too much space, takes too long for everyone to get in their seats, and then getting off the plane you have to wait again for them to lug their big overstuffed carryon out of the overhead compartments.

Your luggage belongs under the plane.

I always bring one change of clothes and any medicines just in case my luggage gets lost. This is always advised by any expeirenced traveller. A small carryon suitcase (correct size) that is allowed by the airlines is of no harm to anyone.....but the last time that we flew NWA (Nov/09) I could not believe some of the carryons that people were bringing onto the plane since NWA charges $25 each way for a suitcase. It was insane. The flight crew were asking people with smaller bags to store them under their seats so the big bags could be stored up top. Some would not even fit in the overhead. That I have a problem with also

My family travels a lot and I guess because we never carry any medications - I am not too worried about the airlines losing my suitcase.

I would just go buy new clothes and in the case of our winter vacations - new golf clubs! But knowing my luck they would lose my clubs on the way home LOL!

I think the airlines are going to have to raise their fares a little and add the checked luggage back into the price. Now we are flying Southwest so you get 2 free bags at check in.

Westjet does give you 2 checked bags also if you are flying from Canada but Air Canada has now lowered that 1 bag. Not sure they are going to offset the costs if they are forcing you to check your luggage.

We'll still fly but which airlines offer free baggage will now factor into our decision since we'll have to check everything. Our last trip we went American which has steep baggage fees and NO free bags(luckily, we were flying on dh's reward miles and didn't have to pay!) and everyone was brining on the maximum allowable carry-ons to try and get around the baggage fees.

Currently, Air Canada has a baggage allowance of 3 bags per person at no charge.

OK... so I haven't been following the news about the new rules.
My questions is: If I am flying out of Buffalo... can we still have carry ons? Back packs of kids? Toys? Snacks etc??

We are in Moncton, NB and always fly out of the US, due to the prices in airfares. This year, we're flying out of Boston, for 640.00 for all three of us, which is a 8-9 hr drive, but for all three of us to fly, it's less than one ticket out of Moncton, how sad. Like I always say, the Cdn airlines are loosing a lot of Cdn flyers to the US.

I booked with South West this year, and we get to check two free bags, which is nice, as we've in the past flown with Continental and with them, you have to pay every checked bag, so then we would just check two bags, then would each have two carryons, doesn't make much sense to me, but I don't know how these airlines think!

I am somewhat concerned about this for my February 3rd trip as I like to bring a couple of books etc in my purse as well as a change of clothing and bathing suit. I spoke to Transport Canada and they are advising you don't take anything extra in your purse at all, including books. They are advising a wallet, gum, ipod, cell phone and that's it. Also you can bring your laptop but not a bag for it (unless it will fit in your purse, so I think we'll just bring DD's netbook).

I am most worried about our connection. We fly Halifax to Montreal and have about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get our baggage, clear customs and get to our gate, if we get held up I'm afraid we'll miss our plane.

The new carry on rules apply to international (incl. Canada) flights entering the U.S. Within the U.S. you can still have carry on - I guess the rationale is they trust their airport security process.

Am hoping things settle down before we fly to Australia in March. We don't go through the USA going there but we do on the way back...hm wondering what do for a 14hr flight with a 6 yr old??Going to be hard to know what we are allowed on the way home....

Yes you can. The US does not have the same rules.

The carry-on rules are Canada's way of making the searches before boarding the plane easier, supposedly. Although they also tell you to go shopping for things to keep you occupied which would have to be searched, right? So what is the difference?

We will drive to Burlington or Plattsburgh. Although, Jet Blue is taking advantage of the situation and totally raised prices! I went to check how much it would be to buy from them and possibly cancel our flights out of YUL for March and it was nearly $3,000 US to fly Jet Blue! :scared1:

I am leaving a day before the kids in March so DH is solo with the new rules, but DD (2) has a prescription for Pediasure due to lactose intolerance and low weight so we have to take that and figure she can carry a purse. Also told DH he could carry a purse, but would have to all it that since they did not say that "man bags" were allowed as carry ons. LOL!

Also you can bring your laptop but not a bag for it

Oh I think I need to double check this one, I would hate for my laptop to get damaged bouncing around the baggage area.....

I understand why they are doing it, they are trying to make it more secure plus with less to check, less time waiting for them to check it. BUT I hate the fact that my kids can not take a carry on to keep themselves busy....heaven forbid if the airlines lost our suitcases and blanky was in there, no one would get sleep at all!

We booked long ago, and if had the choice to drive down and fly out of a US city we probaly would. Certainly would be easier and only adds about 4hrs drive time for us since we already have to drive 3.5 hrs to the airport!

Well like I said before my family and I always drive down in the summer, so it wouldn't be a big deal for us to drive down in the winter. Plus we can pack as much as we want without worrying about any weight limits and the same goes for buying as much items as we want, since other items can be kept in our car.

You can have the laptop bag... now.. here are some updates taken from the United.ca site:

Items that are excluded from this restriction include:
small purses (not exceeding 12 x 10 x 5.5 in. or 30 x 25 x 14 cm)
cameras
coats
items for care of infants
laptop computers*
diplomatic or consular bags
crutches
canes
walkers
containers carrying life-sustaining items
medications and medical devices
musical instruments
special-needs items
*A laptop computer may be transported in a basic laptop bag containing only computer accessories and one or two thin file folders.

Screw the whole carry on issue! Put a clean change of underwear in your purse. Whawawawa.

My fiancee was born in Pakistan and is Muslim, we're dreading flying now at all. Factor in an extra 2 more hours at security on top of the scrutiny he already received...:eek::sad2:

tone.def I will not comment on yoru post because I agree certain countries should be on extra warning and those travellers checked more thoroughly. And I am sure you won't agree!

I still will not drive to Disney, just too long. I would rather drive to Buffalo and take a flight from there even though I hate American airlines. I am hoping this changes.

I find it difficult for parents traveling with children who get impatient on flights. My DD needs to be doing something and not the same thing so she has a carryon with her DS, DVD player, colouring, stickers, food (since she has an allergy this is really important, are they allowing people to bring a bag of food on the plane:confused3
