Before I begin, let me just say that this trip report will be like none of my other TR's in that it has a beginning and an ending. I know, I know......I'll finish those other two.....sometime. I felt I needed to get this quick one written since my brain has just turned 37 and is quickly deteriorating.

First, a fast intro:

Me: 37, Disney lover
DH: 34 (I hate these next 6 weeks cause it makes me look like such a criminal) Anyhow, DH, Disney DS10: Ditto
DD8: Ditto
DS8: Ditto

So how on God's green earth did we find ourselves going to WDW for 4 days over New Year's????

This is long, but stick with me......the shortened version doesn't make sense. Besides, the boards are slow; what else do you have to read?

Well, it all started around this time last year when we were abducted near the DVC booth in DTD. And, our children's was school being converted to year round; meaning that they would have 4 "track outs" (3+ week vacations) throughout the year plus other holidays. We found ourselves in one of those circular arguments: might as well buy DVC since we will be vacationing several times per year; might as well vacation several times per year since we will be DVC owners....:thumbsup2 So, we have our 160 points, but when shall we go? The first track out was already scheduled for free dining, but not using points (although we ended up adding two AKV days at the end). The next track out approaches (Nov. 10-Dec. 5), but work was so busy that I can't find a good date plus holiday prep, etc. In addition, DH's work was rather slow (he is partnered with his dad) so $$ was a little tight. Oh, and we were planning a west coast visit in late Feb. So at this point, trotting off the FL for a week "weren't too smart." However, it was gnawing at me that we couldn't take advantage of this school break. Each day of their track out gnaws more and more til I can't take it anymore! I start calling the DVC to check avail. We could make a quick weekend trip. :yay: The days tick away, and they were back in school, but I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat; well that last part isn't true. Around Dec. 7, my mom called to tell me that she would need another back surgery, but this time it was the biggie. She could either go Dec. 19 or Jan. 2. She chose Jan so as not to "ruin everyone's Christmas." Her words, not mine. She would be in the hospital at least a week, and then maybe rehab, and her recovery would be 6-12 months. :sad1: This scared the crap out of me. I'm sure ya'll can imagine. I'll try not to cry, you try not either.... my mom is 67. Her mother died at 67. My grandmother was in the hospital from a stroke. She called for help getting to the bathroom, but no one came. She got up to go on her own, fell and hit her head, she died before my mom could get to the hospital. My grandmother drank and smoked heavily which I assume led to the stroke. My mom does neither, but still this is all I could think about. I knew I would need to stay with my mom in the hospital and however long after.

Ok, I'll let you take a break. But don't be long. Seriously, do come back; it will get juicy, really, ok I'll tease you with a few installment titles:

One Night in Bangkok
Guests Behaving Badly; Really, Really, Badly
And More Guests Behaving Badly: The Loud Children are finally allowed to say the word, "Stupid"
Encounters With the Dream Team
We Finally Rode that Darn Dumbo!

See, who couldn't come back for that?

We knew the Feb trip was off (no $ spent yet anyhow), and we didn't know exactly when we would be able to travel. But, I kept checking and checking DVC availability, but not really considering going at this point....more just trying to occupy my brain if you know what I mean. Christmas came and went, and I was still checking. My stomach was in knots. I MUST GET TO DISNEY!!!

We need to back up a minute. In the weeks leading up to DH's slowing business, his dad was diagnosed with diabetes. The dad is the salesperson, so he wasn't exactly focused on selling. But after getting his head back in the game, some doors really opened. Most of their lawyer clients are running an obsolete program that has no support. If the system crashes, then too bad. These conversions need to take place on weekends so business won't be disrupted. DH didn't want to go away in case he was needed to work. FIL informed him that it would still be a month or so before the bugs were worked out .....oooh speaking of bugs....you'll have to stick around  Anyhow, FIL said, if you're gonna go, go now; Feb and March will not be a good time to go anyhow. And, I wasn't "feeling" too good about my job. I could just sense that something wasn't right.

DH and I talked about it, as we had done many times in the past 6-8 weeks, and we decided it was now or never. We knew it wouldn't be "never," but who knows what the future will hold? As crazy as it sounds, I found myself calling the DVC every hour or so on Dec. 27. I don't recall what time it happened, but at some fine hour, I was able to get one night at Beach Club and one night at SSR. Dec. 30 and 31. :dance3: But, there was just one problem: I had not been cleared to take a vacation day on 12/31 which was also payroll processing day. I was the payroll person. It was tough for me to ask since I was already taking off on 1/2 for my mom's surgery. But, I asked and there was hesitation, but my wish was granted. :wizard: (I would still have to do payroll remotely...on New Year's Eve...at Beach Club) I was certainly doing a happy dance and all that was left was to Priceline a hotel for 12/29. I certainly wasn't going to spend points on a weekend during holiday season. ;)

See, here's why all that pre-trip history is so important. I didn't have to plan anything since I had sort of planned all along. :cool2: All that was left was making a few ADR's and packing.

OMG!!! I can't believe I left out such an important detail!!!! One of the big, biggest, no, THE BIGGEST reason I wanted to go to WDW now is because it was in the middle of winter. I was so miserably hot during August that I really didn't enjoy the trip most of the time. The highlight of that trip was DS8 doing a backflip at Blizzard Beach and meeting some wonderful wonderful ladies. :grouphug: I wanted to be able to enjoy Disney without being soaked with sweat. :scared: According to the calendar, the end of Dec should have been perfect, right?

Packing was quick and simple; one suitcase per hotel. The good thing about last minute planning is that you don't buy tons of stuff you won't use. However, Santa must have anticipated the trip 'cause he brought a portable DVD player, some DVD's and DS games. :santa: That Santa sure is smart. :teacher:

Oh, here's the ADRs I made:

12/29 5:30 Yak & Yeti
12/30 11:45 Tutto Italia
12/31 3 ish Raglan Road

Up Next: No Time for Pedro?

I'm sure something exciting happened on 12/28, but I can't recall at this time. On 12/29, we get up bright and early and manage to hit the road by 6:00AM. I'm driving first, and all is going well. DH is sleeping and I'm kind of sad that we won't be stopping at our favorite tacky tourist trap. No heir conditioned honeymoon suites; no chili today, hot tomale. :sad2: But DH wakes announces the need to "go" now! Might I add that he is taking a diuretic? Remember this, it is important. So, we get to visit Pedro afterall! But not too long, we have many miles to go. The drive was uneventful other than the constant pit stops.....every freakin 30 minutes! I swore after this trip that we are only flying from now on. Despite the constant stops, we were making pretty good time until we hit construction, then a stop for no reason, then heavy traffic, then rain, then Orlando. We ended up driving straight to AK for our ADR at Yak & Yeti. I was actually pretty grumpy when we there. I yelled at somebody in the parking lot for something. I think one of the Loud Children lost something. I don't know; it wasn't important. But as soon as we boarded the tram, all was right in the world. :cloud9: That is until Yak and Yeti. Some have reported that it was good; we just didn't like it. The portions were small, and not tasty. This one was oop, so no aps or desserts. It just wasn't filling.

After Y&Y, we walked around a bit. DD commented that it was a perfect night in AK. And it was. There was a cool breeze, not too crowded, just perfect. I think all we did was ITTBAB and then we left. DH wanted to get some rest 'cause he knew I would be "hard coring" it over the next two days. Who me? :rolleyes1 So he headed out on a quest for our Priceline find.

Hey S`Late! I`m in!! This is going to be fun!! How long was the drive? I dont think I knew you had twins:confused3

Somehow I missed that this trip existed!

I'm so glad you got this worked out, sounds like you needed it!

I hope your mom and FIL are both OK.

No Yak & Yeti, hmmm?

I think it's official - 3 trip open trip reports on the DIS! But heck - you know I'm in for the ride.

We left the AK parking lot drove about 2 seconds, and we were at the hotel. You are probably asking, what hotel??? Well, we took out chances on Priceline and got the Radisson Worldgate. It has received some pretty bad reviews here, but how bad could it be? So, my DH has a customer in St. Thomas. Most of his issues can be resolved remotely, but he did have to go there once. Of course, I had to go too. I can't remember the name of the resort, but it was one of the best. We were able to get a "local" rate which I guess meant the worst room on the island. We go in the room, open the door to check out our view of a concrete wall. Ok, maybe I just need to look a little to the left. I opened the door, and good Lord, what in the tarnatin heck is that smell? We were right next to the dumpsters. Ewww. Ok, no view, no sitting outside. I went back in, went into the bathroom, notice a trail of "dirt" leading to the bathroom. I look in the toilet, and not to get too gross, but it had not been flushed. For some reason, I looked in the shower and there was a 3" dead roach. That trail of "dirt" was her dead babies. I thought I was going to die right there in paradise. We got moved to an almost perfect room.

Given the above, just how bad could the Radisson Worldgate be? Other than a crack in the bottom of the tub, it was fine....for one night. It was clean, had a fridge, microwave, NO trails of "dirt." The pool area was really nice and DH and I decided that it was probably a pretty happenin place in it's hay day.....back in the 70's! It had a real Don Ho kinda feel to the place which is fine with me. My Disney memories as a child are from the 70's with that same Hawaiian influence. Cue the hula girls from IASW.

Anyhow, after we let the Loud Children swim, we showered and hit the hay.

Up Next: Beach Club!!

Hey S`Late! I`m in!! This is going to be fun!! How long was the drive? I dont think I knew you had twins:confused3

We left home at 6AM and pulled into AK at 5PM. 11 hours

Somehow I missed that this trip existed!

No Yak & Yeti, hmmm?

My mom is doing better. She finally admitted that she pushed herself after her surgery in July and cause more damage. FIL is back to his pee and vinegar self.

I think it's official - 3 trip open trip reports on the DIS! But heck - you know I'm in for the ride.

Oh, do I win something?

Wow! Your moving right along are`nt ya! Yuk about the "dirt" trail!
Glad the Raddison was ok :wizard:

Given the above, just how bad could the Radisson Worldgate be?

::yes:: I have a similar hotel I use for such comparisons. It was a nasty place in the New Orleans area for Mardi Gras whilst in college. Ewww. (I love, love, love New Orleans. In a good hotel. )

Man, you're just bustin' this thing out, aren't you? :yay:

We survived the night at the Radisson, loaded up, and headed to BC! We got there about 7:30AM. I think the check in people were shocked to see a person up and about that early. Anyhow, I got checked in, got our dining credits, the usual instructions about calling for the room number, and we were off to Epcot. But we drove....why did we drive? Oh yes, shorter distance to Soarin. We didn't quite make rope drop, but close enough. We got FP's for Soarin, then rode Nemo. Then we headed over to SE which was open at this time. It's a good thing we rode when we did because the next time we passed SE the line was wicked long. I liked the additions, and the exit area activities were fun. We actually stopped and let the Loud Children play. We ended up hanging out there until about 11:00, then headed for Italy. I was hesitant about trying Tutto because I had not read many reviews and why did they still have ADR's avail? Tutto turned out to be one of the best meals we have had at Disney. If you are into credit maximazation (is that even a word?), then Tutto is a good choice. Our bill for lunch was somewhere around $175...for lunch. I had the veal ravioli. YUMM-O!!!! DH had the lasagna, his favorite, but he wished he had gotten the ravioli. I forgot what the Loud Children had. Mozz sticks, pizza, and gelato? Oh yeah, the gelato wasn't too good and they stole my tiramisu. :headache: They owe me. HA! They don't know that I ate all their Reese Eggs....note to self: buy more Reese Eggs. Anyhow, the only thing that bothered me was the fact that they weren't very busy so the wait staff was just standing around, not staring at us, just looking out over the restaurant, but made a little uneasy. They weren't pushy, didn't rush us, and were obviously attentive. But there weren't any hot Italian waiters...not that I was looking for any mind you. :rolleyes1 But really, what's up with that?

After lunch, we waddled back to The Land for Soarin and LWTL.

Our room was now ready so we headed back to BCV, basically to throw our stuff in the room and head back out. You know, they should really dummy proof the BC and BCV. Who knew there were elevators for each section?

Well, I have to work in the AM, so I am off to bed.

Coming Soon: The day is heating up and so am I...more like I reached my boiling point: 212 degrees?
