If I handed you a SLIDE RULE and a math problem, would you be able to solve it?

Could you solve a math problem with a slide rule?

  • Yes, I've done it many times, and could do it again no problem.

  • I'd be rusty, but I could figure it out on my own.

  • I had to learn at some point, and if I had instructions I could figure it out.

  • I tried to learn at some point, and never did get it.

  • I've heard of one, but never used one before.

  • What's a slide rule?

Don't know what brought slide rules to mind, but I'm just curious how many of us could use one if we had too...

I never did have to learn one, though they were quite commonplace when I was in school. So was a lump of coal to write with, LOL. I wonder if they are used anymore.

High School (many moons ago) science teacher used his all the time. I was never taught to use it.

Um, yeah... see? That is just WAY out of my LEAGUE there! If it weren't for calculators on a GOOD day, I don't think I could add my fingers together! :rotfl:

I think it has to do with that age factor and the fact that my brain took a permanent vacation shortly after graduation! ::yes::

I don't understand them. I've never used one, before. I can figure out alot with a calculator and a pencil and paper, but I've never used a slide rule. :confused3 so I don't know.

If you handed me a math problem and the ANSWER I couldnt' figure it out!

I'm lost. heard of one but never used it. does this make me "Goofy" ? :)

No, but it looks like something I could scratch my back with! :rotfl:

TC :cool1:

I wouldn't even give it a try unless I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express first.
:rotfl2:

With or without your slide rule I would probably have a hard time with the math problem :confused3

oh no, i didn't even know that's what they looked like! i was an film major in college...haven't taken a math class since algebra 2 when i was sixteen  i definitely admire those who are mathmatically inclined (or can at least do their own taxes and balance a checkbook!)

I've never heard of one - looks interesting!!! :scratchin

:scared1: You mean people actually used those things? Thank god I grew up in the age of calculators. Although I have enough trouble doing math even with those

We were supposed to learn how to use them in high school waaaayy back in the 70's. I never got it. Thank goodness calculators have been invented since then!

That's the good thing about being in upper management. I could hand the math problem to one of my engineers. :cool1:

Do you really expect to use one those. Thank God for calculators.

Hugs TI-86 calculators

:confused3
I am sure I had to learn it sometime, but I'm sure a few brain cells have died since then.

Oh my! Another thread to seek out the older DISers! ;) I was just talking with my dad a few days ago about slide rules. Yes, I learned to use one from my dad when I was in high school. ::yes:: He was an engineer and used his daily. He even gave me a small one of my own. There were calculators, but they were expensive and not something a high schooler could afford. My dad and uncle had calculators when other people were still asking what they were.
