If I buy my AP online, when is it active?

and when would it expire? from date of purchase or date of activation inside Disneyland?

do they still put your picture on it?

Your AP will be active once you process it at the park. Your 1 year will start from that date. I think you have to activiate within 90 days of purchase though, so don't buy online too soon. And yes, they do still put your picture on it.
