I am trying to decide if renting a car is a good idea. Family of 4- 2 adults, 2 kids. Start of vacation 3 nights AKLV then moving over to 5 nights BWVI. We are doing breakfast, snacks etc through Garden Grocer because the dining plan is not for us. I am wondering if having a rental for the 3 nights at AKLV is worth the money. Seems cheaper thenlonger you rent. Might save on groceries too if I can drive to the grocery store instead of paying garden grocer to do it for me. What would you all do... Hubby says the reason for staying in the park is for the transportation but if I can get a good deal I might just do it. I would appreciate your insight....

I've done almost the same thing! I had a split stay at AKL and BWV. My family does choose to rent a car so that we can get to AK and DTD (although, given the current construction, I don't know how true that is anymore) more easily. We take the bus to MK, boat to DHS, and walk to Epcot from BWV. We also do a lot of resort dining, so having a car is much more convenient. We also use the car to do one grocery run at the start of the trip. Finally, we found that having a car was easier when transferring resorts. We choose to take our luggage ourselves rather than use luggage services (which is fine, we just opted to drive the luggage and ourselves over to BWV).

Thank you for your input I appreciate it! When do you think I should book it? If I do it now is it too early? Would I get a better deal if I wait a few months?

I tend to book the car rental a few months before the trip, but I make sure not select the pre-pay option (it is generally cheaper than the non-pre-paid option, so that's something to consider). I then periodically check to see if a lower price or deal has come out.

if you have a car you can easily scoot out of the parks into the real world for a large selection of dining options.

we stop on the way from the airport to pick up whatever @ the grocery store.

you can still use the internal transport whether you have a vehicle or not. I'm not a fan of standing on or waiting for buses, typically rent a vehicle. If you put some time into searching for a good rate, quite likely you can obtain an 8 night mid size rental under $200. Look for threads here as to codes, Alamo & Dollar consistently produce good rates.

Another option would be to arrange private transport from the airport which includes a grocery stop.
