If a .com you wanted was not available....

but a .net was available, would you sign up for the .net?

I guess what I am asking, is do you think an internet business really needs to be a .com? I know I don't want .biz.

I know lots of people think most .biz extensions are scams.

And, if you had to take a .net , any ideas on how to make sure that people know your are NOT a .com? ( when they look you up )

Best case would be to have all three of the above point to your dotCOM.

To me, part of the question would be what the .com pointed to. I wouldn't want a .net where the .com was a competitor, too many potential customers might end up there. But if, for example, the .com was a similar company with a completely different service area than I could see that working, because people would end up there, figure out they did something wrong and then double check and end up in the right place.

In this case the .com is a local thing based in New Mexico. I was thinking of using .net but on a national scale. But, yes, they are similar services.

I think a .com is mandatory. Most people when guessing what a website is go to the .com address first. (then they google it and they *should* find the real site.) In the meantime, they end up frustrated that they had to look for it. (or at least that's what I end up being --- frustrated!)

Never use hyphens in the name either. Like www.disney-world-rocks .com ) I hate that.!
