My dh and I traveled to Orlando once long ago (92), and we stayed in this cheap hotel on IDrive (I think it was I Drive). Has IDrive improved alot since then or is it skanky? I remember it being scary and not someplace you'd want to be after dark.
From pictures I've seen, it looks like it's improved A Lot!

The Northern part of I Drive was, and still is iffy. The southern part (near the convention center) has some outstanding hotels.

I Drive will go from a 1* to a 4* hotel. It all depends on what part & how much money you are willing to spend.

The new Ritz Carlton and JW Marriott or not on I-drive.

As others have said, the northern part of I-drive still has image problems but the southern part, the part after Sand Lake Road, is much nicer.

I recommend only staying in the area btween the 8000 to 9000 block. If you are considering anything in the 7000 block don't do it. Hotels are icky. if you want a nice cheap hotel. the holiday inn convention center at 8214 Universal blvd. (is inbetween universal blvd /international drive) or the amerisuites don't remember address but it is in the 8000 block. If you have an entertainment card www.entertainment.com you can get the holiday inn for 54.50 plus tax per night. the rooms are very large and have microwave and refrig. or amerisuites convention center they are more of a mini suite and have kitchenette , living area, and sleeping area they are 69 a night with entertainment card. embassey suites on jamacian ct. is also a great choice more like a 120 a night but, they have huge suites, indoor, outdoor pool, cook to order free breakfast, seperate living area, kitchenette, holds up to 7 people, pull out sofa, 2 tv's. I love this hotel. As for any other hotels on I drive I can't speak for because I have certain critiera and most of the others do not match them so we dont stay there.
