Ideas on Trying to sell a ring for Disney $?

I'm a single mom, and I have a engagement ring I received from my son's father before he took off (long story) anyhow.... I would like to sell it. It's worth about 2k but is an older type ring and would just like to get rid of it. I am trying ebay at the moment but it doesn't look as if I'm going to sell it with only 2 days left and no bids. I tried bringing it to a local jewerly repair place that sells and buys items. They wanted to give me $250 for it. I think it's worth a tad bit more then that but I'm willing to get rid of it for $300-350. Should I just take the $250? Or is there anyplace else I could try. I was thinking if ebay doesn't work we have a thing here called the want ad digest and they have pictures on the net but it's rather expensive.

Any ideas?

Well, if you have AOL, they have a swap board over there and mycoupons.com has a garage sale board. Of course with both, people are leary of buying jewelry because you just never know if it's authentic or not (nothing against you). I know my mom tried the ebay route for her wedding set, and didn't get any bites. Of course, I think she listed it for $15,000 so that's probably why LOL.

You might check around for a local auction house. We have one that sells mostly antiques and furniture, but they also feature some jewelry items. I don't know what cut they take, but they sometimes get good prices. If you have the same locally, they would probably let you set a reserve.

From my experience, it's never worthwhile trying to sell a ring. Jewelers never give you anywhere near the full value b/c their own markup is so high. I'm sure you would be disgusted to find out what they really pay for jewels.

I had a gold channel-set diamond band with 13 diamonds equaling over 2 carats. It was worth $2500 and the jeweler was going to give me about $400. I had the ring remade into one I wanted and still have some diamonds leftover.

If you can, I'd hold on to it and rework the diamonds/jewels/metal into something you'd wear again (or maybe something your son can give his future wife). Unless you really have to have the money, I think the transaction will be a waste of resources.

Thanks for the ideas. I personally don't want to keep the ring it means nothing to me. (little background info: my son's father took off when he was 6 months old, we have not heard from him since by communications or $ wise) so I thought by getting rid of this ring and spending the money on a trip for my son would be a good solution.

The money from the ring would be bonus. I never calculated it into our budget.

I am going to try a few boards and maybe the local pennysaver paper. I will also call a friend of mine who works at a jewerly store to keep an eye out for someone who can't spend alot for a ring.

It would be nice to get some extra $ from it.

As others have said, jewelry is difficult to get a good price on. There are so many factors. I would go to www.pricescope.com and educate yourself on diamonds (assuming that is what it is).

It might be worth you spending $50 on getting a formal appraisal. I would never buy fine jewelry without the paperwork. People are much more willing to consider and spend money on an online jewelry auction if the condition is documented.

Yeahhhhh. I sold it on ebay. I got $316 for it. I did do research when the jeweler told me he'd give me $250. I knew it was an old European cut diamond and I also know my ex only paid $400 for it. so all in all I think I did well and now it's not collecting dust and it's extra $$ for disney.
